So a video buddy of mine called the other day to say he and another were going to be doing a hexacopter test shoot very near my house the next day and invited me to drop by. I passed because I had a job to work that afternoon. Next day I'm heading out the door for my gig and there's my buddy working up and down the street. He says they lost the hexacopter. Now this $12k rig has gps, remote camera control, return video etc. If it looses remote control signals it will return to within 10 feet of where it took off. So how did they loose it? Turns out they flew a morning test then after lunch reloaded new batteries and started to do an actual shoot. About 3 or 4 …

I just want to again say thankyou to Peter and the rest of the team at Gotham Sound, the Ambient team, and everyone else that came along to the RAMPS party tonight. I am blown away by the generosity of the donations, and can't believe I won! Thanks to everyone I got to speak to as well, it was a blast and I'm going to try and come back as often as possible. Cheers!

I have made a change to the new member registration routine since we have had quite a few bogus sign-ups and posts from people who aren't really members. This should not affect any of our existing members (but certainly let me know if it does). I will test this new procedure so as to be sure that it is not too inconvenient for new people who wish to join our group. Regards, Jeff Wexler

As an official announcement, since I'm pretty much retired from working after 50+years and not going to be going to NAB anymore I've handed the RAMPS/JW Mixers party MC dutys to Dave Fisk of K-Tek. Please welcome him as the new host/MC and official door prize giver outer. Thank you all for all the fun at the mixers partys for the past 20+ years. Eric

AUGUST 2, 2013, 4:58 PM A Cheap Spying Tool With a High Creepy Factor By SOMINI SENGUPTA Brendan O’Connor is a security researcher. How easy would it be, he recently wondered, to monitor the movement of everyone on the street – not by a government intelligence agency, but by a private citizen with a few hundred dollars to spare? Mr. O’Connor, 27, bought some plastic boxes and stuffed them with a $25, credit-card size Raspberry Pi Model A computer and a few over-the-counter sensors, including Wi-Fi adapters. He connected each of those boxes to a command and control system, and he built a data visualization system to monitor what the sensors picked up: all the wirel…

• The first rule of holes: when you're in one, stop digging. • What you need is sustained outrage...there's far too much unthinking respect given to authority. • The thing about democracy, beloveds, is that it is not neat, orderly, or quiet. It requires a certain relish for confusion. • Satire is traditionally the weapon of the powerless against the powerful. • There are two kinds of humor. One kind that makes us chuckle about our foibles and our shared humanity -- like what Garrison Keillor does. • The other kind holds people up to public contempt and ridicule -- that's what I do. Satire is traditionally the wea…

Hello mates, I´m currently looking for an alternative battery model for my SD 702t. Its that classic NP-F550, I have been using the Pearstone 7.2V 2200 mAh models and it works great. However, I haven´t found those models in a while, only used in B&H. I´m looking for new batteries. I´ve seen some models on Amazon but I just thought it will be a good idea to ask you guys first. I really don´t want to get the batteries with Sound Devices. Thanks, Rayell Abad

I've just discovered a great reason why guests should become members; you get to see all the pictures. As a guest, you only get to see the linked pictures and miss out on all the ones uploaded by members - and there's a lot more of those. Many threads or posts make no sense without seeing the picture.

If you are a human with any sense, today is a sad day.... The world lost a Hero... http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/05/opinion/avlon-vaclav-havel/index.html?hpt=hp_t3 and: http://www.latimes.c...0,4502559.story Vaclav Havel, former Czech president.... "Truth and love must prevail over lies and hatred," Havel famously said. It became his revolutionary motto which he said he always strove to live by. An avowed peacenik whose heroes included rockers such as Frank Zappa, he never quite shed his flower-child past and often signed his name with a small heart as a flourish. "Like millions around the world, I was inspired by his wor…

A less sanguine look at the Variety story on the possible SAG/AMPTP break through from Jonathan Handel's "Digital Media Law" SAG and the Studios: The Next Roadblocks http://digitalmedialaw.blogspot.com/2009/04/sag-and-studios-next-roadblocks.html RL Note: I had to correct my own words re: "sanguine" from "more sanguine" to "less". Sanguine means "cheerfully optimistic", which Handel's post is not.

Not to shabby but, and there's always a "but", the individual threads on the main board are a bit too small. The "Icon Homage" to Apple is cute if not a bit commercial. Glad the computer company was not named "Asparagus". Eric

As a double bass player, I think this is great. And it looks like a mid-side mic setup.

I just heard from Philippe at Cinela that he is not able to make it to NAB this year but has graciously donated a Pianissimo windscreen for the RAMPS/JWSOUND Party Tuesday night. We will miss Philippe but will be quite pleased if I win a beautiful Cinela Pianissimo!

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/03/nyregion/03film.html?_r=1&ref=nyregion&pagewanted=print March 3, 2009 A Plea to Keep Cameras Rolling in New York By CHRISTINE HAUGHNEY Even the film and television industry, one of the few fields generating profits in the throes of this recession, says it needs government help to stay in New York. At a news conference at Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens, dozens of film and television workers gathered on Monday to ask politicians to expand the incentive program offered to their industry in the past few years, not scale it back as planned. The program, which offers studios tax credits from the city and state for up to…
