Driver Mike Hawthorn, with a camera on the tail of his Jaguar D-type and a microphone slung over his shoulders, narrates a pre-race practice lap around the Circuit de la Sarthe. It’s a rare chance to ride along, to see and hear one of Jaguar’s most legendary racing machines in the venue where it so thoroughly dominated the competition.

The New York Times October 11, 2013 A Two-Level Approach to Protecting Riders’ Head in Impacts By ROY FURCHGOTT There are mishaps that no rider, regardless of how skilled, could avoid. But if that rider knew exactly what kind of accident it was going to be, an engineer could build the ideal helmet to withstand it. That’s impossible, of course, and it’s a major design challenge. Conventional motorcycle helmets, which absorb collision energy by deforming a crushable portion in a predictable manner, can be engineered to mitigate injuries resulting from only a certain range of impact forces. There’s a problem when an impact is not strong enough for the absorption — …

I thought this article on The TANK Center for Sonic Arts was fascinating, inspiring, and encouraging. A Water Tank Turned Music Venue In Colorado, a uniquely resonant performance space. New Yorker By Alex Ross In 1976, the composer and sound artist Bruce Odland participated in an arts festival sponsored by the Colorado Chautauqua, which presented shows across the state. Odland’s contribution was to create a sonic collage portraying each place he visited. The last stop was a town called Rangely, in northwestern Colorado, on the high desert that extends into Utah. Odland was outside one day, making recordings of ambient sounds, when a …

Just because I thought it would be interesting to the folks here, scientist have created an acoustic black hole using a Bose Einstein condensate. http://science.slashdot.org/story/09/06/10/1544246/First-Acoustic-Black-Hole-Created?from=rss I love being a nerd. Now I wonder how long it'll take until Sound Devices figures out a way to use it as a noise reducer.

Los Angeles Times is breaking this story: March 14, 2010 | 5:08 pm Actor Peter Graves was found dead Sunday at his home in Pacific Palisades, according to law enforcement sources. Graves, who stared in "Mission: Impossible," "Airplane!" and Billy Wilder's "Stalag 17"--apparently died of natural causes, the sources said. Graves was 83, according to a biography on the website IMDB.com. In a Times story late last year, Graves said he initially turned down the role for "Airplane!" because he thought it was in poor taste--until actors Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges and Leslie Nielsen signed on to the cast. "They say you are supposed to stretch as an actor, so…

Actor and longtime political activist Ron Silver died at 62, this morning, succumbing to a long battle with cancer. I worked with him many years ago and he was a professional all the way. I'm sure many others here have worked with him as well. http://www.nypost.com/seven/03152009/news/regionalnews/ron_silver_dies_159710.htm One interesting observation: The web versions of The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Los Angeles Times have no mention of Ron's passing. Exit question: Is that because after September 11th, 2001, Ron Silver became a strong conservative? RL

Late last night while working on a low budget movie, the Director/main actor had a scene where he gets into a heated argument with another character. I had a transmitter strapped to his ankle which came loose during the action. As he walked off screen he threw a tantrum and kicked his leg over and over until the connector broke and the transmitter flung into the wall. Then he walked past me and said "Fucking sound, you only have one job to do!" I've encountered plenty of asshole talent, but personally never experienced destroying of equipment. I wanted to take a walk right then and there. I did demand that the transmitter and mic be replaced by today, or he doesn'…

statement from Adobe (emphasis is mine): "Designed from the ground up to deliver high-quality sound to web and video workflows, Adobe Soundbooth enables creative professionals to quickly record, edit and create pristine audio WITHOUT REQUIRING TRAINING IN SOUND PRODUCTION." All kidding aside, this could be useful software (though maybe too limited utility as it seems to be designed to assist in using audio primarily integrated into websites). Regards, Jeff Wexler

The IATSE is going after a real, major network show, but with no interest in wages or working conditions, only getting H&W contributions. (remember that is how the IATSE measures its success). Of course health and retirement benefits are a very good thing... http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/iatse-starts-picketing-biggest-loser-43908 notice that the IA HQ had to make the decision to organize (not just the Hollywood locals involved); any non IA crew members who joined the IATSE crew members in picketing the show will get local memberships (with really low initiation fees) if the action is successful. the show has already been an AFTRA + DGA production. Teamst…
