Stanley Kubrick allowed his then-17-year-old daughter, Vivian, to make a documentary about the production of The Shining. Created originally for the BBC television show Arena, this documentary offers rare insight into the shooting process of a Kubrick film.

The Astronomical Math Behind UPS’ New Tool to Deliver Packages Faster BY MARCUS WOHLSEN 06.13.13 6:30 AM In a sense, all business boils down to math. But some companies have tougher equations to solve than others. At UPS, the average driver makes about 120 deliveries per day, says Jack Levis, the shipping giant’s director of process management. To figure out how many different possible routes that driver could travel, just start multiplying: 120 * 119 * 118 * . . . * 3 * 2 * 1. The end result, Levis likes to say, far exceeds the age of the Earth in nanoseconds. If that number sounds big, imagine having to make those calculations for 55,000 drivers every day. Un…

Ok, here is a heads up ( shameless plug ?) for a great independent movie that we worked really hard on. We had a lot of tough locations, ( they were knocking down the AMBASSADOR hotel around us as we were filming, the stage work we did for the ballroom had a plywood floor, and we only had a 20' carpet we kept moving around to stop the sound of all the extras walking around., and the stage was not a sound stage, so as an added treat, we showed up and then they had a construction site type generator there for us instead of a "movie generator"... etc etc.-.) Also, we had 2 cameras all the time. One of my favorite scenes is with Demi Moore and Sharon Stone in a hair salon…

Ambient Clockit Network - the next step in digital content production workflow As typical set-ups in film and multimedia productions get more and more sophisticated the extensive use of metadata has become essential for an effective work flow. These data are embedded into the files of the respective machines on recording. However, since no common file and metadata structure has been settled, each manufacturer saves in their best suiting configuration. Additionally, there is no interchange between the different recorders on the set which results in the need to extract and consolidate metadata tediously in post. This is where the Ambient Clockit Network co…

I am pleased with the new look of the Discussion Group and I hope there is agreement on this. Please do contact me, either personal message from this site, or public post for us all to read, or private email to me directly (private email of course if you are having problems even getting on the site). Anyone who encounters login problems should try and solve them locally since it usually relates to a bad cookie, the browser performing an "auto-fill" that doesn't work properly, or in the case of Macs sometimes a Keychain issue. For those with Macs who do not know how to deal with Keychain issues, the Keychain Access Utility can be found in the Applications Folder> Utilit…

This really only concerns our members who participate here and on CinemaSound. Ning Network has made their big announcement today, bringing an end to the FREE networks they had been hosting. The pricing plans and feature sets they have announced are actually quite reasonable and competitive (but not free). At this point, I am paying for the new CinemaSound network to be Ad free and have the features we need. I am considering paying Ning on one of the lower cost plans which will keep the original CinemaSound going for awhile. I am not suggesting that we will all move BACK to the Ning network (don't hate me) I just want to keep all our options open. One thing that was an…

New York Times has an article today about how the U.S. Labor Department tracks the skills needed for most jobs, in terms of things like "hand strength", "acute sense of smell", or "mathematical analysis". The article lets you enter the name of your job, and kicks out which job it considers to use the exact opposite set of skills. There's no entry for "production mixer" or "sound designer" or "postie"... but it will accept Sound Engineering Technician. Guess what.... we're not nuclear physicists! (Yeah, I know. The article isn't rocket science either, and its analysis has lots of faults. Think of it more like a party game.)

It is with great sadness that I post the passing of David Allen Weinstock on Feb 7th, 2010. David turned 49 on Feb 1st of 2010 and many of us in the TV / Film / Video community are simply shocked that he is no longer with us. A very long running general illness abruptly claimed David's life. He is survived by his mother and father, two sisters, nieces and nephews. His last production job was for "The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien". David was a super gifted audio supervisor / mixer and taught me everything I know today about capturing professional audio. I own him my career as a sound mixer / recordist. David was well liked and respected by many of our peers in the audio…

Did anyone watch The Sound of Music Live on NBC last night/have any insight on how the sound was recorded? Definitely sounded like lavs, but I wonder about placement, how they dealt with costume changes, and playback. Watched the behind the scenes doc, but as usual there was not a single mention of the production sound crew. Just curious what folks thought over here. -Michael

Anyone see this new reality/competition show on Netflix? 1st episode they have 100 contestants in a room, everyone is miked up. I was wondering how they could coordinate so many frequencies and which wireless they were using. I also wondered how they were mixing, routing, and tracking everything and which lavs (the necklace mics) they were using. Then in the first competition, it's 50 people at a time, hanging from a grid. Then they each fall into a pool. The mic gets wet but again I was wondering which transmitters they were using and how they were protecting them. Anyone have any info about the sound team and how they did what they did? They also have dozens…
