I am asking that those members that feel they can afford it to donate a small amount of money to help me with the costs of maintaining this Discussion Group site and CinemaSound. I have been able to manage on my own for the last 5 years to keep these sites up and running, upgrading the software that powers this forum, upgrading my server accounts, routine and some not so routine maintenance, but I could use some help now. I am asking for a donation of $10.00 (US) on a yearly basis to keep all this going. This is totally voluntary and no one should fear that either of these great sites will be taken down if no one donates. I am asking for $10.00 but any amount will be ap…

We are celebrating the 16th anniversary of the JWSOUND site which continues to be a vibrant and highly popular resource for our sound community. I have seldom asked for donations to support this site , over the years there have been so many spontaneous and generous unsolicited donations it has been a real help in running the site. At this time I am asking for donations if you are able to as the expense of running the site has increased (hasn't everything except our wages!) I have never strived to monetize this site as many other sites have and there has been over the years substantial support from the paid advertising banners running on the site. Many of the companies tha…

I was thinking about putting up a board for people to post Want-To-Buy and Want-To-Sell items here. It would be out of the way, no one has to spend anytime there if they don't want to, and I will not be providing ANY assistance as far as sales go (this will not become an Audio EBay lite for sure). It probably would not even be "classified" as in indexed or categorized, just a place to post buying and selling. What does anybody think? Regards, Jeff Wexler

I will post some more images which may be of interest to others here. It is fairly easy to do the only requirement is that the image file size not be too large. What you do is start a new topic in the Images of Interest board, give it a Subject title and then down at the bottom where it says Additional Options, you can select an image and and add it a an attachment. There was some interest awhile back for Sound Cart pictures and also some of the custom windscreens people have done. I think any pictures from the set, interesting locations, people doing challenging work or just having a good time... it's all good Regards, Jeff Wexler

I have been trying to get most recent posts to display at the top so we don't have to scroll through everything from the beginning, and I think the easiest thing I've found is to use the Recent Posts list at the bottom of the Forum Boards. Selecting the heading (which is in brackets) where the most recent post is will take you right to it. I think I will increase the number of Recent Posts in the list. I want this to be as easy and hassle free as possible. Regards, Jeff Wexler

Haskell Wexler has completed his documentary called "Who Needs Sleep?" which deals with the chronic long hours in the Entertainment Industry. The movie ends up saying a lot about our uniquely American cultural attitude towards work, making a living (and still having a life), insights into how people from other countries and other cultures seal with these issues, health and safety, and most importantly our families. This screening is in L.A., I know, so it really only applies to those who are local. The movie should be widely available when there is general distribution. April 4, 2006 starting at 7PM at 135 Doheny Dr. in Beverly Hills. RSVP for this event at: w…

Please forgive the double posting on this item - I wanted to make sure that this was posted under both name spellings.... On behalf of Ray Cymoszinski's Daughter: Memorial services will be held on September 17th, 2006 for former Chicago sound mixer Ray Cymoszinski, who passed away prematurely on December 25th, at his home in Los Angeles. Ray was well known in Chicago for his talent both as a sound mixer and technician. Beginning with his tenure as a technician at Helix in the early 1970’s, Ray established himself as the “go toâ€ guy if you owned Nagra recorder in the Midwest. Wishing to further his career outside of technical work, Ray began free-lancing as …

One of the good things for me running this Discussion Group with the forum software from Simple Machines (this is true with other software as well) is the statistics report that is available. Under "stats" I can see who has been contributing, what topics have a lot of attention and which hold very little interest for our members. By studying these stats I hope to be able to dynamically moderate this Group in much the same way a moderator would deal with a group of REAL people in a real room (I think you know what I mean). That brings me back to the subject of WHO are our members (and I'm not back on my original thread about nicknames and handles, I'm well over that). …

With so many different names attached to posts on this site, some of which I know and most of which I don't, I would love to hear what everyone's working on and a little about the job etc. I think it would be fun and informative for all of us to hear about what's working and what isn't, either anecdotally or otherwise. Anyone up for it?

Just read it in the Gotham Gazette: Lectrosonics Update Lectrosonics Reblocked Wireless frequencies are about to undergo some necessary shuffling, due to the FCC auction of the spectrum above 700 mHz, which will take effect February 2009. Lectrosonics is no exception, making Block 27, 28, and 29 no longer available except by special order in 2008 and entirely unavailable thereafter. To compensate, Lectro will be expanding the blocks available on the lower end of the spectrum. Blocks 19 and 20, pending FCC approval, will roll out first quarter 2008, with a possibility of further expansion later. In addition, more products will be added using block 944.

My very good friend, David Ronne, died this morning. I have known David for over 30 years, he was my oldest and dearest friend, I named my son after him... he will be missed. - Jeff Wexler

February 6, 1922 - December 27, 2015 It is with great sadness that I have to report that my father, Haskell Wexler, has died. Pop died peacefully in his sleep, Sunday, December 27th, 2015. Accepting the Academy Award in 1967, Pop said: "I hope we can use our art for peace and for love". An amazing life has ended but his lifelong commitment to fight the good fight, for peace, for all humanity, will carry on.

My question is not a statement for or against gun control but I do ask this... Do events like the tragedy at Sandy Hook elementary school, not to mention shootings that preceded it, change anybody's mind about gun policy? Is there anyone calling for new gun policy today who was not calling for it two days ago? I'm genuinely curious. Guns, politics, evolution, abortion, climate change, corporate control of elections, whatever... when we've chosen sides, do we ever switch? Do words, information and external events ever alter our opinions or does that data only get filtered in a way so as to reinforce existing opinion? How does group opinion evolve?

I bought one of these at Fry's for $130 and have been very happy. Got another today for $40 less. Here's a link that describes it: http://www.beachaudio.com/Acomdata/Shd160ufape-54-p-112761.html 160GB, Firewire 400, small. Works great with my new Fusion. They have them now for only $90 until Tuesday, so I thought I'd let y'all know. PG

Zaxcom has just announced a new wireless transmitter they're calling the "ZHD". The press release is on the Zaxcom website but I have posted here as well. POMPTON PLAINS, N.J. — April 13, 2016 — Zaxcom today announced their latest line of digital recording wireless transmitters with a brand new modulation, Zaxcom High Density (ZHD). ZHD modulation allows for up to 10 channels of wireless to be operated in one MHz of frequency spectrum space. Like other Zaxcom Digital Wireless transmitters, the new ZHD models, the TRXLT3, TRXLA3 and TRX743 are 100% digital, have built-in backup recording with timecode, NeverClip™ for superior dynamic range and are fully encrypted. …

-UPDATE- This thread is open again. I will be watching this carefully but I am willing to have it play out here on JWSOUND. No one should feel any obligation to participate in this as it is probably still preferable that this issue be resolved between the two principle parties, privately and not on a public forum. It has already been established that the two people involved know eachother and have been in contact personally and privately, so there is the hope that this will be resolved. If at such time I am privy to the resolution or information to the voracity of the claims, I will post it here. - original post edited by administrator - Justin Blakely liv…

Apologies if this thread has already been started. Re: The quite useful Sennheiser website (for those who may travel to an unfamiliar city on short notice) that allows one to type in a zip code and find out what television stations are on the air in that locality: [http://sennheiser.us/freqfinder/index2.html] Up until two or three days ago, the range of frequencies listed started at channel 14 and ended at channel 52. As of this morning, the upper limit displayed is channel 36. They say their website is linked directly to FCC, so this may be an FCC modification. Or, since manufacturers will be no longer man…

The annual mixer mixer takes place during the NAB conference on Tuesday April 17 at the Satay Grille in Las Vegas: http://sataylasvegas.com/Location.html If you plan to attend, please fill out this brief RSVP form so we can establish an accurate guest count and order enough food: http://bit.ly/yHt6G9 RSVPs to the JWS forum (ie- this discussion thread) do not count and will not reserve a space for you at the party. Note that there is a door charge that gets you access to a buffet and friends. Drinks are extra (but reasonable). In the past, the cost has been far under $30. A bargain. We'll know this year's price later, but expect it to be about the …

I have been working with the Yamaha 01V96 for over four years now and one of my pet peeves has been the lack of a good set of limiters for dialogue recording from among the long list of 53 preset programs from the "Effects Library". Those of you who are exclusively wireless don't need limiters in the individual channel inputs. But I am a stickler for hardwired booms and limiters are essential. I've finally installed the Yamaha Channel Strip Package which was previously only available for the Yamaha DM1000 and 02RV96. It is a simple installation and now I have two compressors and a 6 band equalizer available to "insert" into as many channels as I want. The Compressor 26…

I am requesting once again that those few people on this group who have not yet identified themselves by use of a real name, hopefully their own, should really consider doing so now. Even if it just served to make me happy, why not do it? I have tried very hard to make this forum truly personal and open to any and all opinions --- I have the highest regard for free speech and more importantly free expression, but as in face to face discourse where you know who you are talking with, I would like this group to act the same. Further, I really appreciate the majority of people here who have also gone one more step and posted a little bio --- no great literary opus necessary, …

Not sure if this topic has ben discussed on this forum but I have to vent - I have been member of IATSE local 695 for the past 7 years. I have paid my quarterly dues on time and have worked hard to accrue my hours to be eligible for my insurance benefits. I recently received a letter from MPI Health Plan stating that as of January 1, 2013, participants will have to pay a premium for their dependents. "For Participants with 1 dependent, the premium is $25 per month, paid quarterly, semi-annually or annually." "For Participants with 2 or more dependents, the premium is $50 per month, paid quarterly, semi-annually or annually." So for someone like me w…

Today i got an unexpected phone call from Don at Loon Audio. Which is funny when you think of how in the last year you had to call him about 5-6 times a day to maybe just maybe hear him pick up just once. And now he's calling me out of the blue, oh have the tides have turned. He was calling to check on all of his poles he had sold in the last year. He apologized again for his here or there responses, and was proud to say he has gotten his shop back up to speed. He moved to CA but then his business took a tumble and he packed up and headed back to Montana to his old shop. Hes now gotten back up to speed and is ready to start pushing out his great product again. …
