I have made a change to the new member registration routine since we have had quite a few bogus sign-ups and posts from people who aren't really members. This should not affect any of our existing members (but certainly let me know if it does). I will test this new procedure so as to be sure that it is not too inconvenient for new people who wish to join our group. Regards, Jeff Wexler

http://cms.tvtechnology.com/europe/0104/gsma-calls-on-the-european-commission-to-adopt-vision-for--uhf-spectrum/272146 London — Spectrum-hungry cellular operators are not only found in the U.S. With American telecoms ready to extend their operations into the UHF band that was for decades the domain of television broadcasters, European telecoms don’t want to fall behind the capabilities of the Americans. An association of European telecom operators has requested that the European Commission examine the UHF spectrum above 470 MHz with an eye toward re-allocating large swaths of it for telecom (i.e., cellular) operations. Although the European Commission was alre…

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/03/nyregion/03film.html?_r=1&ref=nyregion&pagewanted=print March 3, 2009 A Plea to Keep Cameras Rolling in New York By CHRISTINE HAUGHNEY Even the film and television industry, one of the few fields generating profits in the throes of this recession, says it needs government help to stay in New York. At a news conference at Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens, dozens of film and television workers gathered on Monday to ask politicians to expand the incentive program offered to their industry in the past few years, not scale it back as planned. The program, which offers studios tax credits from the city and state for up to…

Very interesting white paper report from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences on the difficulty and importance of maintaining long-term backups of movies and TV shows on digital formats. This is a very well-thought out, detailed (128 pages) updated report going over all current digital picture and sound formats in 2012, and various strategies on how to verify, copy, back up, restore, and migrate data over a period of time. (Mark Ulano expressed concern about this I think in a past issue of the 695 Quarterly.) Some of the material is pretty dry, but I think it's important for people to grasp the basics on why and how to get a handle on your data, and…

This Saturday, June 5, will be the annual Camp Cuculoris, a high noon gathering of commercial crew folks at the Sagebrush Cantina. It's been held on the first Saturday of June for a number (5,6,7?) of years as a way for us to reconnect with old friends and recount tales of the "good old days." I've managed to attend a few times and was always glad I did. A couple of beers, a few laughs, and no one tell us "we're back". Things start at noon but usually get jumping by 2 or 3 and continue into the early evening. All film people are welcome. Bruce Sagebrush Cantina 23527 Calabasas Road Calabasas, CA (818) 222-6062 DIRECTIONS: 101 Frwy. Mulholland Dr.…

From Daily Variety: SAG to respond to offer by Thursday Voting results for AFTRA expected tonight By Dave McNary While Hollywood waiting anxiously for the results of AFTRA's ratification vote, SAG's agreed to deliver its official response Thursday afternoon to the majors' final offer to the guild. AFTRA's expected to announce the voting on its deal as early as this evening. SAG's campaigned vigorously against the AFTRA pact, which contains terms matching the congloms' final offer to SAG. SAG's hoping that a defeat of the AFTRA deal will give it the increased leverage it needs to obtain better terms. Ballots went out to all 70,000 AFTRA members, including 44,000 …

It's been a while since I have posted. With the shutdown and loss of work, I have put my head into the sand, my family, and my beer. I hope that everyone is doing ok and just wanted to send some good vibes out there. Hope no one is truly destitute and that your families are safe. Wishing everyone a good weekend.

Hal Needham was the stunt mans stunt man. I got to work with him when he directed an episode of BL Stryker in the early 90's. What I recall was he had 2 hearing aids and they would suck in any sound available, he would actually shut down craft service " because you are making too much g-damn noise over there. He was integral to the development of the Shotmaker camera car and I do hope someone wrote down some of the stories he would tell. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/hal-needham-stuntman-director-dies-651039

Trying to figure something out: I have 23.976 material with LTC recorded as sound, and a BWF from a MixPre 6 that has outputted the LTC. (Also set to 23.976, although the LTC 'seems' 24, but I take it that has to do with a bad clock of the cam.) Now, there is an offset of 28 frames between the LTC and BWF. (And by a sick joke of the TC gods the video is named '00028.mov'.) On duckducking, I've found myself and remembered I had this before, and it could be due to setting 'preroll' in the recorder. (Meaning, start recording X seconds before hitting the record button.) But that was a 'very' long time ago. Is this still a bug / featurette? (In case o…

Here is the inside scoop from Jonathan Handel: http://digitalmedialaw.blogspot.com/2009/01/sag-hardliners-successful.html Here is how the "news" that Doug Allen was ousted as Chief Negotiator leaked out: http://digitalmedialaw.blogspot.com/2009/01/sag-board-meeting-grinds-on-into-night.html I believe that the SAG Board closed ranks after this news leaked and changed their mind so as not to loose public (read Membership) support. RL Fixed my spelling mistake too..

In perusing Lectrosonics' new web site I read the following document (dated November 15, 2010): http://www.lectrosonics.com/FCC-Spectrum-Updates/fcc-a-spectrum-updates.html (I apologize if someone has already posted this link.) This is one of the most straight-forward and concise overviews I've seen of the "coming storm." Also, it's devoid of the frequent "the sky is falling" panic that often accompanies such discussions.
