From Deadline Hollywood: Shooting-permit organization FilmL.A. said today that on-location filming in all production categories increased 4.7% during the first quarter of 2011, the fifth consecutive quarter of gains in the region that includes the City of Los Angeles, parts of unincorporated Los Angeles County and other local jurisdictions. Still, feature film shoots declined 5.3% and TV fell 3.7%, as the bulk of overall gains in production days came from smaller projects like music videos, industrial videos and student films (up 21.5%) and commercials (up 2.4%). “The latest data suggest a softness in the industry, but not a full loss of momentum,â€ FilmL.A. chair Ed …

OK--how about some mindless speculation! The FCC says they want to corral all wireless into 2 TV channels in each market. Some topics for speculation: 1: Which two channels? 2: Will the channels be the same in all markets? (snort!) 3: Will it really be 2 discrete channel zones or just "2 channels worth" of scattered space? 4: Will walkie talkies share this space too? 5: Do you think RF squatters in big cities (in SF, the guys picking up old newsprint are particular offenders) will follow to this zone too? 6: WHEN will this really happen? 7: If the admin/congress/FCC appointees change due to a big GOP win, will this all change? phil p

In perusing Lectrosonics' new web site I read the following document (dated November 15, 2010): http://www.lectrosonics.com/FCC-Spectrum-Updates/fcc-a-spectrum-updates.html (I apologize if someone has already posted this link.) This is one of the most straight-forward and concise overviews I've seen of the "coming storm." Also, it's devoid of the frequent "the sky is falling" panic that often accompanies such discussions. This article is a bit light on details, but it seems the police car and its occupants suffered most: A Portland police patrol car carrying two crew members from the television show "Cops" collided with another car Tuesday night, police said. http://www.officer.com/online/article.jsp?siteSection=1&id=48627

Daily Variety: Budget cuts threaten Italo state film entity By NICK VIVARELLI ROME -- Italian state film entity Cinecitta-Luce has announced it is on the brink of closure due to draconian arts funding cuts, prompting cries of consternation both within the local industry and from the international film community. Cinecitta-Luce, which is located on the historic Cinecitta studios lot, comprises promotional, production and distribution activities, plus the vast Istituto Luce archives, a historical treasure trove, as part of its mission. After withstanding previous cuts in recent years, the vast entity is now set to suffer a 60% budget slash from the Silvio Berlusconi-…

I just read on facebook, of all places, that Dave Edgar has passed away. I did not know Dave well but he was very instrumental every year in helping to organize our annual r.a.m.p.s. party at NAB. I always really enjoyed seeing Dave once a year and talking with him at the party. I will miss him. Regards, Jeff Wexler

I have installed and activated the Tapatalk plug-in for this forum which provides a way to use the Tapatalk app on mobile devices to view and participate in this forum. You will need to download and install Tapatalk on your mobile device --- there is an app for iPhone and I believe also for Blackberry and Adroid. Get the Tapatalk app however you normally acquire apps for your phone (iTunes Store, etc.) and once installed you will have to SEARCH for this group: "Discussion Group @ jwsound.net" (just typing in "Discussion Group" should find us). The app works well, displays all content nicely and even provides for the Latest posts feature, etc. I don't know yet if thi…

Wow, those of us who grew up listening to Peter Paul and Mary; "BOSTON – Mary Travers, who as one-third of the hugely popular 1960s folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary helped popularize such tunes as "Puff (The Magic Dragon)" and "If I Had a Hammer," died Wednesday after battling leukemia for several years. She was 72. The band's publicist, Heather Lylis, says Travers died at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut. Bandmate Peter Yarrow said that in her final months, Travers handled her declining health with bravery and generosity, showing her love to friends and family "with great dignity and without restraint." "It was, as Mary always was, honest and completely authentic," he…

This from the mothership union in the US: The “reinvention of the “New GM has begun with the opening of a lithium-ion battery plant in Brownstown, Michigan, near Detroit. The event was remarkable not only because the Brownstown plant signals GM’s return to the production of an electric vehicle but also because, for the first time in about 30 years, GM has opened a non-union plant in the U.S. http://www.counterpunch.org/benchich02242010.html The US taxpayers are part owners of GM. This is an opportunity for Congress to insist that all new plants be union shops.

This is from Nikki Finke's Deadline Hollywood Daily: SAG vs AFTRA Scripted Primetime TV Series I had repeatedly asked both unions to give me tallies on how many primetime network scripted shows this next 2009/2010 TV season will be under SAG's or AFTRA's administration, and especially the breakdown of new shows since so much inaccurate information was being tossed around during the contract vote. Finally SAG replied. AFTRA has yet to answer despite PR assurances it would. 2009/2010 Scripted Prime Time Schedule (Screen Actors Guild figures) SAG 69% AFTRA 31% 2009/2010 Returning Series SAG 44 AFTRA 5 2009/2010 Pilot Pickups SAG 5 AFTRA 25 http://www.de…

L.A. production takes downturn Off-lot film shooting slows, but TV rises By DAVE MCNARY "Off-lot feature production in Los Angeles posted its weakest quarter ever during the opening three months of this year amid the threat of an actors strike and the ongoing trend of features shooting outside Hollywood. First-quarter stats released Monday by permitting agency FilmL.A. showed 903 days of feature shooting, off 56% from the 2008 first quarter and down 14% from the fourth quarter -- which set the previous record for lowest production level since record keeping began in 1994." http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118002381.html?categoryid=13&cs=1 RL

Recent article in Broadcast Engineering. http://broadcastengineering.com/news/ctia-takes-aim-spectrum-1119/ Of particular note: One such block of frequencies is the 470MHz to 698MHz band used by TV broadcasters, the filing said. This so-called “beachfront property, which is highly desirable because of its propagation characteristics, “is ideally suited to the provision of mobile broadband services, the CTIA filing said.

In the next day or so the Look and Feel of the site will change, back to a different theme I have been working on since the beginning of this site. Navigation, features and functions will be the same for the most part but some things will look a little different and some functions may be located in different places. The new "old" theme is a little cleaner and simpler which has been the goal all along as we transitioned to this new site/platform. No more changes are anticipated until a few months from now when updated v. 3.2 of IP.Board is released.
