I thought this was a very cool yet simple idea. For those of you that deliver your final product on a Hard Drive you may want to check this out. Don't need to buy full enclosures anymore can just get the drives. http://www.geekstuff4u.com/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=&products_id=630

We have seen in Apple, Inc. indisputable and dramatic growth over the last several months and much of the main stream business and technology journalists still cling the whole notion of the "halo effect" of the iPod and iPhone. I believe that there is a halo effect but it is only one factor. At the core of Apple's success is still undeniably the Mac and it continues to gain on "the other computer" every day. Here is an excerpt from one of the more thoughtful analysts: "C|Net: More to Mac Sales Than Halo by John Martellaro, 4:10 PM EDT, October 23rd, 2007 Looking at the Apple sales numbers in detail, it remains impossible to attribute Apple's sales growth to the iPo…

I desperately need a new office/studio computer--not really for audio editing but for file upload/downloads, office stuff and etc, with maybe a little light ProTools LE work thrown in. The best bang for the buck seems to be the Mini Core Duo (w/ superdrive) and a non-Apple monitor. How have these computers held up for those using them? 4 USB ports would be convenient. I'm not looking to DC mod the thing or mount it on a cart, although the small size might mean that it gets used on location occasionally. Philip Perkins

Apple has released a re-vamped version of Logic which includes as well the new Soundtrack Pro 2 (that ships already as part of Final Cut Studio). At the core of Logic Studio is Logic Pro 8, Apple’s professional digital audio workstation. Among the changes in Logic is a new, single window interface. According to Apple, the interface now allows instant access to music creation and production functions, including snap-to-transient selection and sample accurate editing directly in the Arrange window. Logic Pro 8 also features new audio production tools like Quick Swipe Comping and dynamic channel strip creation. In addition to surround production capabilities, the ne…

We have installed a brand new 24" iMac at the Union Local 695 as part of the work being done by the newly formed Education Committee. The plan is to have this Mac available for our union members for training --- everything from basic computer skills to file management, Pro Tools, Boom Recorder and so forth. The really good thing about the Mac is that with Boot Camp we are able to have both a beautiful Mac running OS X AND a Mac running Windows for those who wish to get some training on that platform. Courtney installed Windows XP and his BWF Widget Pro software on the iMac and we anticipate that we will be installing more software, both Mac and Windows, in the near future…

Network storage suggestions?

Hello to all, I'm considering going to a network storage device of some sort for the iTunes library here in the house. I've been using my desktop Mac as a music server of sorts and it just seems awfully wastful to keep it running 24/7. Anybody have any suggestions about a manufacturer or model, either pro or con? I figure about 500 GB should hold us for a while, since the library is currently about 270 GB, but something that's expandable via USB or Firewire would be great. Thanks, Jim

I tried to clean my very old keyboard that I use with my Mac and I killed it. So, I ordered a new keyboard and decided to try the new slim keyboard (that draws on the design of the keyboard on the MacBooks). I have been using it now for a day and I love it. Of course it is pretty to look at, as with all Apple products, but if it were only pretty to look at it would be a bad thing if a keyboard succumbed to what Courtney refers to as Steve Jobs' obsession with "looks" over function. I am not a touch typist since I learned to type at a very early age --- actually before I even knew any real words, so I am now a fery fast "hunt & peck" even though I really don't have to …

I watched the posted Guided Tour of the new iLife 08 software suite and I was struck again by the value of the Mac. I really don't know what software programs are bundled for free with most PC purchases and I have to admit that I also don't know how much can be accomplished with just the Microsoft software that ships with all PC's. I have a favor to ask of my Windows using friends --- would you look at the Guided Tour online and then let me know if a Windows based PC, out of the box, can this easily and elegantly accomplish all of these things. I know I have been accused of being a Mac bigot (or kinder, a Mac zealot) but I really feel that no other company, other than …

Does anyone have the new iMac with the glossy screen? There has been a lot of discussion about this being a really stupid decision from Apple since evidentially it is almost impossible to avoid a reflection of the user no matter what the lighting --- the screen itself is more than adequate to illuminate the user producing a stunningly clear reflection. I know some people have had experiences with glossy screens (they were very prevalent in the Windows laptop world before Apple even shipped any portables with glossy screens) so what is the general consensus? Regards, Jeff Wexler

[1:08 PM] The 24" will be priced at $1799. The 20" unit will be 1499. There will be another 20" model at $1199. Hi guys, My beloved TiG4 550 died recently, I bought a MB Pro 2.2 to replace it, all went well in the transition, except Virtual PC wont work on the new Mac... Bought the latest (v3.0) Parallels... I can't get it to Install Win 98SE, or Win95 for that matter (I know W98 is ancient, but that's what I need to run my accounts software). Anybody out there with experience of this? (I have read on some blogs that Parallels 3.0 is basically a croc, as Bootcamp does not support W98, any alternatives?). I was looking forward to using drag & drop between the two platforms, BW Pro etc. but I really need to Invoice my clients, keep track of possible deadbeats & do my taxes.…

Dave Fisk asks: "Are there any free anti-virus programs for MAC?" I am changing the subject heading so that we may talk about the very real issue of virus protection. The way I see it, the Microsoft macro virus problem is very real and Macs can be infected (but not affected) and pass these viruses on t other Mac users and PC users. All of the rest of the virus things, trojan horses and such, even if received via email or the web to the Mac, are highly unlikely to be passed on to anyone else. So, if there is a simple and free utility for the Mac that will just check any Microsoft Word document that we have to deal with, either generated by us or sent to us, then that w…

In an effort to be a good citizen and play nicely with others (and as per Courtney's urging) I am attempting to get Microsoft stuff (what little I have running on my Mac) in proper order. I downloaded and ran the 2 most current Office 2004 updaters, 11.3.5 then 11.3.6, strongly recommended for all Mac Office users. Both of these updaters are supposed to fix various security issues (I still don't understand why a word processor has so many "security" issues that need to be "fixed"). First of all, the installers for these updates are huge and the whole process took over 10 minutes (which is longer than it takes to update the whole Mac OS X operating system). The installer l…

I want to look at a video clip that is in wmv (foam house insulation demo) I downloaded from the foam manufacturer. Is there an app that will play this on my mac? I get a message that says the file is not a "movie" - apparently Quicktime cannot convert it. Thanks.

Interesting price-comparison between Macs and PCs over on the Computerworld website. While it's widely believed by many Windows users that Macs are the "overpriced" hardware choice, this PC-centric website comes to the opposite opinion. A couple of caveats: the piece only compares laptops and low-priced machines like the iMac, but still the article is fairly even-handed. Read what they have to say here: http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&taxonomyName=macintosh_os&articleId=9023959&taxonomyId=123&intsrc=kc_feat Any of you who have anti-Mac friends and co-workers might use this as a little positive ammunition…

Current figures for Apple's rise in the sale of music worldwide is truly amazing. The following article appeared in Macworld online: "Apple’s iTunes Store is continuing its rise in popularity as it moves up the list of the most popular places for consumers to purchase music. A recent report from market research firm NPD places iTunes in third place among all music retailers. iTunes rise is even more dramatic when you consider that the report does not just consider online retailers, rather it looks at all retailers including traditional brick and mortar stores. In third place iTunes captured a 9.8 percent share of total music sales, ahead of Amazon, Target, Bord…

I am trying to upgrade from X 10.2.8. Superdrive died so replaced that. Got two upgrade packages. 10.3 Panther and then after I got new superdrive I found a retail copy of 10.4 Tiger. It loads but after going through install it says my hard drive is damaged. (Works fine otherwise with the limited pdf downloads and TextEdit notes to myself). I am leery of doing a full install which erases everything and reformats the HD because of the possibility of losing the limited capabilities I have. I want to upgrade FCP and Nuendo and Safari all of which require at least 10.3. Apple store "genius" suggested using a "First Aid" utility on the 10.4 install disk. I did…

I just got back from a day at Infocomm 2007. The largest convention for AV equipment and information communications hardware going on in Anaheim this week. It has the convention center divided into sections covering Audio, Video Display, Digital Signage, Event Staging etc. There were over 900 exhibitors and almost all had some sort of computer related or driven product. Or they were using computers to generate the displays they were showing. Thousands of computers in media related use and I began to notice a couple of odd things. There were NO Macintosh or OSX products or computers anywhere. Not one. Curious. I started to take note of each booth I visited and…

The a good summation of the Keynote at Word Wide Developers Conference can be found at the Macworld site: http://www.macworld.com/news/2007/06/11/livekeynote/index.php As Scott has already pointed out, one big announcement was Safari for Windows. We know that Apple makes really good software and that goes for Windows software too (many Windows users have pointed out that the iTunes software on their PC is one of best programs they run). Some highlights: (most of the Keynote was about Leopard, the next OS X upgrade due in the fall) Jobs also noted that a new folder has been added to the dock called Downloads. By and large, users clutter their desktops by adding d…
