The interview at the D5 Conference where Steve Jobs and Bill Gates got together to talk about their history, the history of computers, the present and the future, is available now as a free download at the iTunes Store. You can download either an Audio only podcast or the full video (over an hour running time for the video but I don't know how long to download). It is well worth a look if you haven't seen it yet. This company is offering a mount for the Mac Mini, designed to mount the computer on the back of an LCD monitor but could also benefit those who want to provide a solid and secure mount for cart use. http://www.sonnettech.com/product/maccuffmini.html Regards, Jeff Wexler

appeared in Macworld: "Macworld's Reliability Survey By Dan Miller (dmiller@macworld.com) This week, Macworld.com featured the findings of a reliability survey we conducted for the June 2007 issue. We did the survey for a couple reasons. For one thing, Mac users have several alternatives when it comes to getting their Macs serviced: Apple stores, authorized service providers, the smart guy down the hall. It'd be good to know which one is best. For another, we see a lot of anecdotal reports about Mac problems--from yellowing wrist-rests to exploding batteries--and wanted to find out just how prevalent those problems really are. Read our reliability-and-satisfaction…

This looks to be a good utility for re-claiming all the storage that seems to be filled up with, what? "You've done a perfunctory cleaning of your documents folder, deleted half of your iTunes library and parted with some seldom-used applications, but your startup volume is still mysteriously filled to the brim. Fortunately, discovering whereabouts of the lurking files responsible for eating your drive space is a task made almost weirdly simple with a utility called WhatSize." http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20070522104736464 Regards, Jeff Wexler

I'm curious if anyone has upgraded a Mac Mini to the new Core 2 Duo chip or knows someone who has (or can). I assumed that Apple would do this themselves, but they don't seem to be in any great hurry, as there's not even rumors of a new Mac Mini with the faster processor. Thanks for any information that you may have! Regards, Noah Timan

I am not sure how Boot Camp will deal with Vista but here is a comment regarding the various editions of Vista and licensing: When Windows Vista, Parallels and Virtualization Collide (from Mac Observer) According to an article on Mac Observer, Parallels, makers of the popular Parallels Desktop for the Mac, is alerting its customers that they'll run into End User License Agreements (EULA) when running Windows Vista in a virtualization-based environment such as the one Parallels provides. According to Vista's agreement, which the user essentially signs when they click the "Agree" button, is that the Home Basic and Home Premium editions of Microsoft's recently rele…

Hi all, I've just installed Boot Camp and am doing some testing to see if I can get rid of my Windows only notebook and came across a really wierd problem and was hoping someone here might have a suggestion. I'm rendering a video on the Mac (in Windows) and my output is targetting an external drive (Seagate 300 GB FW). I can see the render writing the files out, but when it is done, and I shut down and start the other computer, the files are gone. There is just one file in the folder, called change.log. Any ideas? I really want to switch to the Mac for everything (it renders the same video 1 hour faster - huge difference). Thanks in advance! Phil

There is definitely one thing I find very frustrating on the Mac - the dependence on the mouse. I started using computers before the mouse became an important part of the system, during the PC XT era. Even nowadays with Windows machines, I prefer using the keyboard most of the time just because I am so used to it, and use the mouse very little. In fact the mouse in this case becomes an alternative means of input. In the Mac, i found some very standard practises I am used to just don't work or do something completely different. For example, usually I use the TAB key frequently to switch cyclically between various fields and hot points on a web page or a form. Similarly…

Hey all, I've been using a cool software program called Sound Byte by blackcatsystems. The program is set up like a radio station cart machine, and will play any format audio clip you drag into the rack. The version I use has 5 racks, each rack has 75 carts. They sell a larger and smaller version of Sound Byte. The carts can be color coded, renamed, vol. adjusted, etc... I have used the program for non timecode playback and it works well, I can see a lot of uses for the software. I mostly use it to entertain myself and coworkers. There is a boatload of sound fx and audio clips for free on the web,( see there is more than porn on the web). As I recall you can download a v…

Does anyone know what it takes to remote roll a SD 702T (or 744T for that matter) and Metacorder (on a MacMini) from a CS208D? I'm aware of the CL-1 and the Tranzport, but aren't these both interfaced directly with their respective recording platforms? I'm looking for a solution that will enable me to use the remote roll switches on the Cooper.

Like someone else, who asked a question about Safari in an earlier thread, I don't know whether this part of the site contemplates discussion about computer issues that are not directly related to sound recording. Just a note to say that after downloading the new Internet Explorer 7, Microsoft's first thorough reworking of IE in years, a few weeks ago (I gather that earlier this week, it was installed via the internet, automatically, on the computers of most Windows users), I decided to have a look at Opera and Firefox. I had not tried these products before. It turns out that there are quite big differences between these interfaces with the internet. In my case, I wa…

Mac Mini for cart
by Guest tourtelot- 22 replies

I am considering buying my first Mac, a Mini, for the cart. I am thinking about using a 12" (or so) touch-screen monitor as the user interface. This is a question for the Mac guys on the group; which version of this "box" will run some WinXP apps that I will still want to use in this production dedicated machine? Does the G4 1.4G with superdrive have the Intel CPU? Thanks.

I was thinking about the new desktop tower mac for my home studio, (FCP and PROTOOLS and some MOTION work), but the new Imac 24 inch loaded up and ready to run two monitors, (my old 20in.), I'm tempted at the price point. Any sisters or bros, friends or foes with any POV"s or thoughts? Max Respect, Old School,CrewC, or Pappy, ( I'm called all three)

I seem to remember someone asking about audio conversion software for the Mac. There is a new version of Sound Grinder available that could be useful. I have only limited personal experience with an older version but it did do what it was supposed to do. http://www.monkey-tools.com/pages/products/sgmain.htm Regards, Jeff Wexler

This may be OT as it's a computer issue that doesn't directly relate to sound, but I know there are a lot of Mac-savvy folks here and I'm wondering if anyone can help. On one of my accounts/"identities" on my Mac (OS X 10.3.9) the Safari browser is causing major problems. Every time the program starts, the entire computer (and especially Safari itself) begins to run at a snail's pace. I've tried deleting every program and preference pane connected to Safari and re-installing, as well as removed all startup items and background software, but none of those things have made any difference. Before I completely wipe the drive and reinstall (or find a comparable browser), I…

I'm starting to research touch screens for a possible Mac Mini / Metacorder setup. My biggest concern at the moment is the resolution of these touchscreens (I've been looking at Xenarc and Lilliput), even the larger Xenarc apparrently only support 640 x 480. Metacorder is designed for 1024 x 768, which completely fills the screen of my 12" laptop (at 800 x 640 MC goes off the screen and you can't use it). This Lilliput (http://www.digitalww.com/VGA_TM_810VGT.htm) says it supports that 1024 x 768, but it appears to be 800 x 600 natively. Would my screen be readable/useable? Is anyone here using a setup like this? Thanks, Brandon

I need a new utility computer. This computer does email, office stuff, billing, taxes, but also does audio file transfers, upload/download etc.. This is not a computer for a big DAW (but maybe PTLE, Audacity etc), and not for multitrack recording-- not a location machine at all. So..... Intel-Mini? IMac? thanks Philip Perkins

Dear Jeff, Terrific site! My wife is getting annoyed with me borrowing her Powerbook: I have to make a decision “wife or Powerbookâ€. Over 30years of wife and only two years of Powerbook, I find that the Powerbook logic is easier to understand….. All that said... I have to get another wife that has an Apple or buy my own to use with the Motu Traveler, Cameo, & Deva V, for either Boom recorder or Metacorder. I'm a fan with great respect of your diligence in your research to gaining a good understanding in these matters and your benevolence in sharing your knowledge. In my limited practical use of Apples I am considering the Mini Mac or Ibook 12â€ both …

One of the main reasons some have wanted to go to a Mac Mini setup as opposed to using their PowerBook or Mac Book Pro laptop has been the difficulty and inconvenience of the laptop form factor when trying to use it on a cart shelf. The advantages of using the laptop over a Mac Mini are obvious: no DCD powering problems, for example, and the biggest advantage --- you may already own the laptop and not have to purcdhase a Mac Mini. I may be th first to find this out (or the last if everybody already knows this) but how about using the laptop with an external monitor and keyboard and the screen CLOSED with the laptop tucked away on a slim shelf? See below an Apple Knowledge…
