Need a little computer help here... As many of you know, I picked up a Short/Cut very cheap. The drive is noisy, so I was going to replace it, but was thinking today about replacing it with a 8GB flash card. I'm not going to be storing lots of music or material on here, so 8GB of storage is enough I think. Plus, I have a bunch of these cards around. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000YUMLPI/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000ZHS2QM&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1B0KF3GMFJA6VNMQ7AKW I was looking at something like this, but was wondering if anyone has used anything like this before. …

What is the current consensus on the display for the Macbook Pro? I took a non-professional user to the Apple Store and got the opinion that the glossy display was sharper, as if the antiglare screen seemed to have an overlay on it. I received mixed reviews from a few DITs, though most seemed to prefer the glossy. A removable overlay is available, though it is apparently difficult to apply in a professional manner.

From Gizmodo, interesting graphic. Just an added thought, if the sound mixing business gets any worse we could become "MacBook smugglers" to Brazil. Nice country to visit, great for beach lovers too --- Rio! RL

A very Happy Christmas to all. I have recently become a Microsoft free zone and bought a previously enjoyed Macbook to go with my Mac Mini. I assumed I could playback DEVA DVD RAM disks in the Macbook, as I used to in my trusty Thinkpad and can in the Mac Mini, but I can't. Is this a hardware or a software issue? I just got a (used) Macbook 2G Intel Core Duo and I'm trying to get LecNet2 to work properly. The Windows / Parallels combo works great (makes me wonder why anyone would buy a PeeCee, but I digress). When I download and install the LecNet2 software, it runs, but won't see the Venue. Parallels sees the "VR" in the USB selection, but not the LecNet software. I've re-installed everything. I'm usually pretty good at figuring this stuff out eventually, but this one has me stumped. I've installed version 4 and then version 5 Parellels I've installed both Windowz XP and then Windowz 7 Latest version of LecNet2 from the Lectro D/L site. Parallels sees the Venue. Ideas…

I am posting this in the Mac section because it is Mac only software. For those who already have a good, easy way to re-size images (for posting here on this Group, for example) this will be of no interest. For those Mac users who have been looking for a really good software utility, I like Easy Crop a lot. You can set whatever size you want (really good for those of you who are trying to post images right out of your camera) and also limit the FILE size. I use this all the time for managing image files for the web, for emailing, etc. http://www.yellowmug.com/easycrop/ Regards, Jeff Wexler

I've done a fresh reinstall of Win XP pro on my pc. I've reinstalled Pro Tools 8 with all the creative pack too. When I do the first load up and it loads the plug-ins for the first time it gets as far as structure and stalls. This is the first time I've done a clean install with PT8 as when I first installed PT8 I still had 7.4. I've reinstalled it and re-downloaded the installer and the same thing happens. Though if I remove the creative pack and then run Pro Tools 8 again it comes up as normal. Any thoughts? The new version of QuickTime included with Snow Leopard (called QuickTime Player X) is almost a complete overhaul of the previous version, from the look and feel of the application windows right down to the preferences menu (or lack thereof). If you were looking to change some options but don't know where to start, this Preference Pane can help enable or disable many of QuickTime's features. Megabyte Computing's QuickTime Player X Preference Pane 1.0 provides an interface to some QuickTime Player X preferences otherwise available only from the command line. It includes preferences for rounded corners, simultaneous recording, autoplay, display of closed captions and sub…

This may take care of some of the issues some folks may be having with 10.6.0. It is a fairly small update - less than 10 megs.

Using a Macbook Pro that, of late, has started to have problems when transferring files to and from various drives. Frequently, a message will appear that says a file is in use. Then, when I hit okay, the progress bar won't go away even after hitting the "x," the drives can't be ejected, the Finder can't be quit and the computer can't be restarted except by manually shutting off by holding down the power button. Then, it takes several tries (plugging and unplugging) for the drives to be recognized even after repeated computer reboots. I use MacJanitor and have repaired permissions several times. I even completely re-installed the operating system (10.5.. Help! A.

I have TW Cable for internet access. My cable comes in, goes into my cable modem, goes out by ethernet to my Airport Express for WiFi to the house. The problem is, my kids' MacMini is slow and uses wireless G. It's near the TV and modem in the living room. Can I use a 1x2 hub or splitter to split the ethernet signal from the modem to feed an ethernet cable into the Airport Express and the MacMini? This ought to make their internet connection faster, right? Also, does anyone have an old ethernet splitter and/or 15' ethernet cable lying around? I could just go to Best Buy, but I am CRAZY broke! New iPhone app: "Sonoma Wire Works's FourTrack ($9.99, iPhone and 2G iPod Touch only) is a multitrack audio recorder with four tracks (record one while listening to the others), unlimited length, 16-bit/44.1KHz quality, calibrated meters, fade and pan, clipping lights, time line display, shuttle, Wi-Fi sync, and more" Probably just a toy. I haven't looked at it. - JW

Hot off the presses: 13" MacBook is now called a MacBook Pro, costs less than previous MacBook, has SD Card slot and Firewire 800. The 13" MacBook is now called a MacBook Pro. Starts at $1,199. Cheaper than the MacBook it replaces. Ranges from $1,199 to $1,499 in standard configurations. 10:13 am At what point isn't this just a MacBook Pro? It can even expand to the same levels of RAM and HD as the MacBook Pros. The backlit keyboard is now standard in it as well. Also, FireWire 800. 10:12 am Updating the 13" MacBook today as well. Gets the new display, SD card slot and better battery life.

From the Business page briefing in today's Washington Post: AT&T, the exclusive U.S. carrier for Apple's iPhone, will begin selling the device without a contract for the first time. The 8-gigabyte model will sell for $599 and the 16-gigabyte model will go for $699, AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel said. The offer, available next Thursday, will let customers sign up for month-to-month plans with AT&T. Best regards, Jim

I was upset by Apple dropping Firewire in the new aluminum MacBook since many of us had relied on prior MacBooks and iBooks for our work. What I only just realized is that Apple's currently shipping least expensive portable, the so-called White MacBook, still has Firewire. Even though this is the lowest model going (and probably will be E O L sometime soon), for $900. you can get a pretty decent portable for Boomrecorder, Metacorder, etc. excerpt from MacWorld: "Externally identical to the last white MacBook, the new 2GHz model has the same number of peripheral connections (a pair of USB 2.0 ports and a single FireWire 400 port) and keeps the same mini-DVI port, as opp…

I'm about to buy a 744T recorder and want to buy a MacBook to burn deliverable CD-Rs as well as a platform for future Boom Recorder use. It's been suggested I use Roxio Toast as a burner program. Any comments? Do I need this software, or is there effective software already bundled in the Mac? This will be my first Apple computer. The other option is to use the SD/ Panasonic DVD RAM unit. Any insights welcome. Chris Newton

Is this a Green Apple? Three Apple patent applications have surfaced indicating the company may be rethinking its policy of using non-user-serviceable batteries in its mobile devices. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/02/06/apple_battery_patents/

This is a sound related query: My iBook G4 OSX 10.4.11 no longer makes the "TA-DA" sound at startup. Is this repaired by yet another preference trashing (the usual fix)? There does not seem to be a com.apple.startup in preferences, but there are several com.apple.LaunchServices-014503.csstore with different 4 and 5 digit numbers that I am a bit intimidated to trash.

This is one of the oddest most intriguing products I have seen ... and I really don't know exactly what one would do with it! Evidently it has been available for Windows PC for quite some time (so I wouldn't have known anything about it) but it is now available for the Mac. Could this be useful for controlling recording software on a Mac setup? Take a look: http://www.solitudenorthwest.com/

Obama administration miffed at old White House PCs quote from from Cyrus Farivar It's well-known that Obama himself is a Mac fan, and not surprisingly, his campaign staff was largely powered by a fleet of Macs as well, but according to The Washington Post , the Obama team waltzed into the White House, only to find "computers outfitted with six-year-old versions of Microsoft software." Disappointing? You bet. Furthermore, "Laptops were scarce, assigned to only a few people in the West Wing. The team was left struggling to put closed captions on online videos." Here's to hoping that one of the elements of Obama's mantra of change will be getting rid of those ancient …
