All the analysts are focusing on the iPhone 3G as if it is just ONE PRODUCT from Apple. It reminds me of all the discussions, usually riddled with inaccurate figures, about Apple's real success is the iPod, or it's all about the hardware, or there is no money to be made with an Operating System, etc., etc. The undeniable fact is that Apple, Inc. is hugely successful in whatever they do, period. There have been very few mis-steps in the last 10 years and to think, as some analysts have said, that Apple has blown it this time by changing the business model with the iPhone, just do not see the bigger picture. There is a good article that focuses on the new Mobile Me servi…

Mozilla has released Firefox 3 beta and it now looks exactly like Safari! I think that's great so the few times I actually have to use Firefox because of Safari incompatibilities, everything looks basically the same. For me, Firefox has never held any great attraction over Safari in terms of speed, ease of use and so forth. - Jeff Wexler

I've seen a couple of Bus Powered DVD+/-RW drives that support lightscribe disc labeling. You need to use Lightscribe compatible DVDs but this basically allows you to burn the disc, flip it over, and print your label on it. Sound like a neat trick, and a good way to cut out the middle man of making labels, or writing w/ a sharpie. Anyone use this?

For those interested, Apple has seen a meteoric rise in market share over the last year or so. Here are some of the figures: According to preliminary data from NPD, Apple reportedly achieved 14 percent of the U.S. retail PC market share in February 2008, up from 9% just a year ago. This represents 60 percent unit growth and 67 percent revenue growth year-over-year. Mac Notebook sales were up 64% year-over-year and Mac Desktops up 55% year-over-year, with strong sales of the MacBook Air this February. In 2001, Apple launched their retail store initiative with the slogan "5% down, 95% to go", referring to market share. - JW

There's been a lot of hubbub lately in the Mac community about Psystar, the "Open Source" hardware maker that's introduced a whole line of cheap Macintosh clones. No doubt, the whole thing will probably be crushed by Apple and their attorneys, but I have to admire the spunk and gumption of these guys. They've basically taken cheap Chinese PC clones equipped with decent Intel Core Duo processors, and found a way to install Mac OSX Leopard on them without any compromise... so far. Their entry level unit is only about $399, but the jury is still out as to reliability. And there's always the risk that Apple will putatively change their OS to turn the Psystars into bric…

For those that do run windows on their macs via the various solutions available, are there spyware, virus, trojan horse, etc issues? Does this have to be dealt with, and if so, do you now need to run the appropriate utilities to keep your computer safe and secure?

Hi I am looking for dust and rain cover for my Macbook Pro, I will be using it for sound recording in a dirty location with a lot of dust. I have a small setup so I would like to work on with the dust cover always on. I am looking for something like a little transparent tent that I can put my hands in it to control the laptop. Let me know if you can refer me to any product similar to my description. Thanks

Microsoft created an internal music video, performed by the so-called Vista Street Band, to promote its sales efforts for Vista and SP1. The video, intended to be humorous, has found its way onto YouTube. The production values are quite good with Springsteen and E-Street band look alikes … but it is kind of pathetic and a little sad as well. The lyrics are so forced into the music which I guess is part of the humor. It's fun to watch in any case but I can't imagine it even served its own purpose, that of motivating the Vista sales team. You can see it easily at my blog: The Vista Street Band - Jeff Wexler Note: It has been confirmed with a Microsoft spokespers…

from Mac Rumors site: "Appleinsider is backtracking on their claims from last year that the Mac mini was set to be discontinued. According to the rumor site, they've received word to the contrary: For the first time in nearly a year, however, people familiar with the matter tell AppleInsider there's new life in the Mac mini department, where a small team of engineers have recently been tasked with gutting the diminutive desktop and applying fresh internals. The Mac mini is expected to accompany the rest of the Mac line to the new Penryn Core 2 Duo processors. Specs are expected to start at 2.1GHz with the same GMA X3100 graphics processor used in the current MacB…

Report from various sources about failure rates and dissatisfaction with Flash (SSD) drives: Flash Drives Failing at Significant Rate, Study Finds March 19, 2008 9:00 AM Chris Barylick As cool as first generation technologies may be, there are also some drawbacks. According to Macworld UK, laptops with flash-based solid state drives are being returned at an alarming rate. The primary reasons cited are technical failures and performance shortcomings, as reported in a study released this week by brokerage firm Avian Securities, which covers the high-tech and aerospace industries. The report cites that an unnamed large manufacturer is seeing return rates as high as 2…

Apple has announced that they will not be at NAB this year. Some have speculated that this means Apple has given up on the Pro Applications. This is not the case, as analyzed by a very well informed (and lengthy article) to which I have posted this link: http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2008/02/12/is-apple-shedding-its-final-cut-pro-apps-at-nab/#more-1554 This article also points out that Avid will not be at NAB. Additionally, within the article there are links to other articles, one details the history of Quicktime, Microsoft's efforts to kill it off, and lots of other interesting computer history. http://www.roughlydrafted.com/RD/RDM.Tech.Q1.07/5F0C866C-6DDF-4A9A-…

Intuit has had a rocky history with the Mac as most of us know. There has just been an encouraging announcement that I will post below --- this will not be available until quite a bit later this year but it is still good news for all of us that rely on Intuit products. Quicken Financial Life for Mac Quicken for Mac has long existed as a Carbon application due to its pre-existence on Mac OS 9. However, in recent years the Quicken for Mac designers have increasingly felt that they were not bringing the product to its fullest potential. With a Carbon code base, and varying 3rd party libraries, a universal binary version of the application became impossible without a grou…

I tried to connect my 744T to my PowerBook (running Leopard now) and I could not get the Hard Drive to mount on the Desktop. Courtney explained to me that with the new firmware I have to make a menu selection (Firewire connect) HDD+STOP to access Internal Hard Drive. This finally worked but mounting, unmounting and file transfer speed was very slow. I don't know if this is a Leopard (OS X 10.5.1) problem or something wrong with my 744T. I have now updated to v. 2.40 firmware and there seems to be some improvement. Anyone else having any of these problems? Regards, Jeff Wexler

I installed Leopard OSX 10.5 on one of my Macs, a fairly old single core 1.8 ghz tower (pretty much at the lower limit for system requirements) and the install was REALLY SLOW --- over an hour, longer than any other install I have ever done. Also, Apple has reduced the status states reported on during the installation to just 2: Checking install DVD and Installing, so you don't get any reassuring detail (installing system components, installing languages, optimizing system, etc.) just 2 very slow moving status bars. What I don't like: 1. The new Dock is absolutely a case of EYE CANDY with the look lending nothing new to the functioning of the Dock, and in my opinion i…

PC World's latest review of laptops has discovered the fastest laptop to run Microsoft's latest incarnation of Windows - Vista. The ironic antithesis of it all, the laptop happens to be a 17" 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo MacBook Pro. The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year is a Mac. Try that again: The fastest Windows Vista notebook we've tested this year--or for that matter, ever--is a Mac. Not a Dell, not a Toshiba, not even an Alienware. The $2419 (plus the price of a copy of Windows Vista, of course) MacBook Pro's PC WorldBench 6 Beta 2 score of 88 beats Gateway's E-265M by a single point, but the MacBook's score is far more impressive simply because Apple …

So has Apple shipped updated Mac Books to retail stores and are ready to be consumed. As rumored, Apple has quietly updated the MacBook tonight to the Santa Rosa architecture with mild speed bumps and the GMA X3100 integrated video. White 13.3" $1099.00 2.0GHz/1GB RAM/80GB/Combo/GMA X3100 $1299.00 2.2GHz/1GB RAM/120GB/SD-DL/GMA X3100 Black 13.3" $1499.00 2.2GHz/1GB RAM/160GB/SD-DL/GMA X3100 Despite comparable clock speeds (2.0 -> 2.0GHz, 2.16 -> 2.2GHz) to the old models, the new MacBooks use the Santa Rosa chipset which boasts a faster 800MHz front side bus over the previous MacBook models. The introduction of the GMA X3100 video card also provid…
