I just got my hands on the new Windows 10 and it is awful! What were they thinking? It looks VERY retro, incompatible with every single software application, incredibly sluggish and ugly as hell. I was thinking of leaving the Mac and going with Windows but after looking at this... forget about it! Wait a minute. I think it might be Windows 1.0, not 10. Missed the decimal point I guess. I might give Windows 10 a whirl when it comes out.

Logic Pro X 1 2 3

- from Macworld review Those who’ve seen the Roman numeral X slapped onto Final Cut Pro may approach this release with some initial trepidation. Has Logic Pro been stripped of vital features to make it more accessible to GarageBand users? Is Apple abandoning professional audio engineers and musicians to cater to the prosumer user? No and no. While Logic Pro has indeed adopted some of the look of Final Cut Pro X—with its dark visage and panes that can be invoked or dismissed as the mood strikes—Apple’s digital audio workstation (DAW) has lost none of its power and gained valuable features on just about every front. The new iMacs introduced today at the Apple Event are utilizing a dual drive system that they call Fusion Drive. Utilizing a conventional spinning hard drive and a Flash or Solid State Drive, computer performance is greatly enhanced. It should be noted, as the article below points out, this is not a simple caching system. The Mac OS is actually doing a lot of fairly sophisticated dynamic management of these two drives. Apple's New 'Fusion Drive' Not a Typical Hybrid Drive Tuesday October 23, 2012 7:25 pm PDT by Arnold Kim Amongst the many new products Apple introduced today, they also announced a new storage option called Fusion Drive. Apple's website desc…

Just moving this discussion over to the "Computers" section... speaking as a guy who's heavily used Macs since 1986 (I held off until the Mac SE came out), to me, the operating system of choice is just a means to an end. I'm annoyed by Mac OSX, Linux, and Windows all the time. They all suck, they're all unreliable, and they're all evil. In more than 30 years of dealing with computers, I still don't trust them, and I use a whip and a chair to get what I need out of them. But Mac OSX gets out of my way better than Windows -- in my experience. When I use a Mac, the OS disappears and all I'm aware of is doing what I need to do. Windows and Linux just get in the way and a…

Apple has officially announced announced that Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5 and Compressor 4 are available today on the Mac App Store. "Final Cut Pro X is the biggest advance in Pro video editing since the original Final Cut Pro," said Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "We have shown it to many of the world's best Pro editors, and their jaws have dropped." With very few people having bought into Thunderbolt this may well be the demise. There's an interesting war brewing between Apple and Adobe, as witnessed by this recent statement by Steve Jobs on Flash: http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/ Jobs makes some good points that they have to move away from proprietary systems like Flash for mobile devices like the iPhone and the iPad, which use low-power chips. But Adobe is howling mad, and a lot of industry pundits are weighing in about it: Engadget Gizmodo Fortune And this doesn't even touch on the recent stolen iPhone prototype debacle, which is one of the most bizarre tech stories of the past decade. Jason Calicanis weighs in on this in an excellent editorial at this link. …

By looking at the specs I do not see a reason why it should not run snow leopard operation system since snow leopard is a PC OS. I am not very happy with the video card but for nothing video intensive it is an excellent little device. Wave agent anybody?

Well, it finally happened... I had a hard drive failure in my 27" iMac. I have been using computers for a very long time and this is a first, for me. I know the phrase regarding drives: "it's not a question if it fails but when" so I guess I have just been incredibly lucky. The good news: drive replaced, no charge (AppleCare) and everything was backed up by TimeMachine. I am now waiting for TimeMachine to do its thing --- close to 900 GB on a 1 TB drive being restored ("About 2 hours and 55 minutes remaining"). Let's hope it all goes well.

I just read an extensive article titled "The malware myth" which addresses the whole issue of whether the Mac will eventually wind up just as messed up as most Windows PC's as more and more people use Macs everyday. There are things mentioned specifically about the inner workings of Windows (like the Windows Registry) that I don't really understand but seem to be fundamental to this issue in relation to the two operating systems. The entire article is posted on my blog: http://jwsound.net/WP/?page_id=32 - Jeff Wexler

I just swapped my old office+video Mini for a new Mini running 10:11:6, and decided to see what else was around for my simple video edit needs beyond FCP7. Before I bought into Premiere I thought I'd try Resolve, since A: it's used by lots of DIT and colorist folks I know and B: is free. So far so good. Anyone else using Resolve as an editor? One thing I'm not happy about so far, vs. FCP7: the rendering seems very slow--hardly faster than real time playback.

Dear Jeff, Terrific site! My wife is getting annoyed with me borrowing her Powerbook: I have to make a decision “wife or Powerbookâ€. Over 30years of wife and only two years of Powerbook, I find that the Powerbook logic is easier to understand….. All that said... I have to get another wife that has an Apple or buy my own to use with the Motu Traveler, Cameo, & Deva V, for either Boom recorder or Metacorder. I'm a fan with great respect of your diligence in your research to gaining a good understanding in these matters and your benevolence in sharing your knowledge. In my limited practical use of Apples I am considering the Mini Mac or Ibook 12â€ both …

Hey, my colleagues bought a brand new mac pro in our office we mainly use for video transcoding, copying files, reading SxS n stuff. Now we need an audio interface we want to use to listen to and to analyze our recorded / transcoded audio with wave agent, Adobe Audition etc. There has to be: - good sound 24/96 (yes, really?) - ideal: XLR out for our Genelecs (or TRS) - low latency - XLR input that accepts line level - very good headphone amplifier - not needed: mic amplifier, 48v, multitrack i/o, guitar in, phono, 7.1 ... - price: unfortunately lower than RME league So what do you recommend? Budget is low (of course) so I am thinking about computer recording so I can mix and have ISO tracks on file. Thinking using Soundcraft M8 mixer with my 003 racks with additional to all my wireless and one boom man. The boom man has his own 2 track SD system on the bag so I am not worry about him. Have any of you have this setup before and can you give me some opinions? Real cool Director and DOP, actually give me a nice space in the house for me to setup and time to do so. thank you,
