Dear Jeff, Terrific site! My wife is getting annoyed with me borrowing her Powerbook: I have to make a decision “wife or Powerbookâ€. Over 30years of wife and only two years of Powerbook, I find that the Powerbook logic is easier to understand….. All that said... I have to get another wife that has an Apple or buy my own to use with the Motu Traveler, Cameo, & Deva V, for either Boom recorder or Metacorder. I'm a fan with great respect of your diligence in your research to gaining a good understanding in these matters and your benevolence in sharing your knowledge. In my limited practical use of Apples I am considering the Mini Mac or Ibook 12â€ both …

Full article here: http://gigaom.com/apple/apple-said-to-have-hired-the-audio-genius-behind-thx/ Apple has reportedly hired Tomlinson Holman as its new audio chief, according to a tweet by Leo Laporte Wednesday morning. Laporte said he had it “on good authorityâ€ that Holman “is joining Apple to run audio.â€ Holman is the brain behind Lucasfilm’s THX sound, and the world’s first 10.2 surround sound system. Apple had yet to respond to a request for confirmation as of this writing. Holman is currently a film sound professor at the University of Southern California, and he has received an Academy Award for Technical Achievement. He spent 15 years as the corpo…

Current figures for Apple's rise in the sale of music worldwide is truly amazing. The following article appeared in Macworld online: "Apple’s iTunes Store is continuing its rise in popularity as it moves up the list of the most popular places for consumers to purchase music. A recent report from market research firm NPD places iTunes in third place among all music retailers. iTunes rise is even more dramatic when you consider that the report does not just consider online retailers, rather it looks at all retailers including traditional brick and mortar stores. In third place iTunes captured a 9.8 percent share of total music sales, ahead of Amazon, Target, Bord…

My powerbook logic board just took a crap. I have to make the decision to either send it out or do it myself. Has anyone in the group replaced their's before? If so, how difficult a job is it? The computer is a 12" G4 Powerbook. Thanks

Apple has announced that they will not be at NAB this year. Some have speculated that this means Apple has given up on the Pro Applications. This is not the case, as analyzed by a very well informed (and lengthy article) to which I have posted this link: http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2008/02/12/is-apple-shedding-its-final-cut-pro-apps-at-nab/#more-1554 This article also points out that Avid will not be at NAB. Additionally, within the article there are links to other articles, one details the history of Quicktime, Microsoft's efforts to kill it off, and lots of other interesting computer history. http://www.roughlydrafted.com/RD/RDM.Tech.Q1.07/5F0C866C-6DDF-4A9A-…

Apple has released a re-vamped version of Logic which includes as well the new Soundtrack Pro 2 (that ships already as part of Final Cut Studio). At the core of Logic Studio is Logic Pro 8, Apple’s professional digital audio workstation. Among the changes in Logic is a new, single window interface. According to Apple, the interface now allows instant access to music creation and production functions, including snap-to-transient selection and sample accurate editing directly in the Arrange window. Logic Pro 8 also features new audio production tools like Quick Swipe Comping and dynamic channel strip creation. In addition to surround production capabilities, the ne…

Is this a Green Apple? Three Apple patent applications have surfaced indicating the company may be rethinking its policy of using non-user-serviceable batteries in its mobile devices. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2009/02/06/apple_battery_patents/

Just thought everyone here would be interested. I got a M1 Max 16" Macbook Pro when they were launched. Although at home I mostly use WiFi I got a Gigabit Ethernet adapter just in case. It's always useful to have one around, especially nowadays when you might need to use Dante or other Ethernet audio transport. TL;DR: Buy the Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter and the Thunderbolt 2 to Gigabit Ethernet while supplies last! There are other alternatives in the market (A Sonnet adapter using the same Broadcom chip as the Apple Thunderbult-GbE costs as much as $200), and out of curiosity I have ordered a D-Link adapter which is claimed to have …

This is a sound related query: My iBook G4 OSX 10.4.11 no longer makes the "TA-DA" sound at startup. Is this repaired by yet another preference trashing (the usual fix)? There does not seem to be a com.apple.startup in preferences, but there are several com.apple.LaunchServices-014503.csstore with different 4 and 5 digit numbers that I am a bit intimidated to trash.

So has Apple shipped updated Mac Books to retail stores and are ready to be consumed. As rumored, Apple has quietly updated the MacBook tonight to the Santa Rosa architecture with mild speed bumps and the GMA X3100 integrated video. White 13.3" $1099.00 2.0GHz/1GB RAM/80GB/Combo/GMA X3100 $1299.00 2.2GHz/1GB RAM/120GB/SD-DL/GMA X3100 Black 13.3" $1499.00 2.2GHz/1GB RAM/160GB/SD-DL/GMA X3100 Despite comparable clock speeds (2.0 -> 2.0GHz, 2.16 -> 2.2GHz) to the old models, the new MacBooks use the Santa Rosa chipset which boasts a faster 800MHz front side bus over the previous MacBook models. The introduction of the GMA X3100 video card also provid…

There's an interesting war brewing between Apple and Adobe, as witnessed by this recent statement by Steve Jobs on Flash: http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/ Jobs makes some good points that they have to move away from proprietary systems like Flash for mobile devices like the iPhone and the iPad, which use low-power chips. But Adobe is howling mad, and a lot of industry pundits are weighing in about it: Engadget Gizmodo Fortune And this doesn't even touch on the recent stolen iPhone prototype debacle, which is one of the most bizarre tech stories of the past decade. Jason Calicanis weighs in on this in an excellent editorial at this link. …

The latest ranking in the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) shows Apple still topping the list as highest in customer satisfaction for personal computers. Apple's customer satisfaction score reached a record 85, which was 10 points higher than Dell, its closest competitor. "We haven't seen anything like this before, where a company scores 10 points over its nearest rival," said Claes Fornell, the head of the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), conducted quarterly by the University of Michigan. Fornell believes that part of Apple's climb in customer satisfaction has been due to a particularly poor response to Window's Vista, which may have contribu…

This caught my attention: “The features and capabilities of iPad give us the ability to set a new standard for multitrack recording and editing on a mobile device,” said Rim Buntinas, WaveMachine Labs’ CEO. “Users of the Auria app can play 48 mono or stereo 24bit/96 kHz tracks simultaneously, record up to 24 of those tracks simultaneously, and also edit and mix with familiar tools. With its portability and all-day battery life, iPad has revolutionized recording for audio professionals allowing artists to record anywhere.” So will that mean both Pro-Tools and Final Cut Pro will have iPad apps? Here is Apple's Press Release. http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2…

Very troubling news story: CNBC Engadget Mac Rumors CNN I'd like to wish the best for the guy. Pancreatic cancer is so tough to overcome -- he's beaten it for almost seven years, but it's a persistent, deadly disease. I've been a long-time Jobs observer -- I won't call myself a fan, because I think the man's frustrating, difficult, argumentative, and capable of being very abusive, according to friends of mine who know him personally. But I also think he's one of the most brilliant men of the last 20 years, somebody who truly changed the world in many ways. I've often said, "if he only made Pixar a success, or just made the Mac, or just invented the iP…

Just moving this discussion over to the "Computers" section... speaking as a guy who's heavily used Macs since 1986 (I held off until the Mac SE came out), to me, the operating system of choice is just a means to an end. I'm annoyed by Mac OSX, Linux, and Windows all the time. They all suck, they're all unreliable, and they're all evil. In more than 30 years of dealing with computers, I still don't trust them, and I use a whip and a chair to get what I need out of them. But Mac OSX gets out of my way better than Windows -- in my experience. When I use a Mac, the OS disappears and all I'm aware of is doing what I need to do. Windows and Linux just get in the way and a…

From the Business page briefing in today's Washington Post: AT&T, the exclusive U.S. carrier for Apple's iPhone, will begin selling the device without a contract for the first time. The 8-gigabyte model will sell for $599 and the 16-gigabyte model will go for $699, AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel said. The offer, available next Thursday, will let customers sign up for month-to-month plans with AT&T. Best regards, Jim

Need a little computer help here... As many of you know, I picked up a Short/Cut very cheap. The drive is noisy, so I was going to replace it, but was thinking today about replacing it with a 8GB flash card. I'm not going to be storing lots of music or material on here, so 8GB of storage is enough I think. Plus, I have a bunch of these cards around. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000YUMLPI/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_2?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000ZHS2QM&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1B0KF3GMFJA6VNMQ7AKW I was looking at something like this, but was wondering if anyone has used anything like this before. …
