First Look: iPod Hi-Fi Get to know Apple’s all-new iPod speaker system By Dan Frakes from maccentral.com Apple’s iPod Hi-Fi speaker system, unveiled at a Tuesday press event, marks the company’s first foray into the big-ticket iPod accessory market. But in seeking to carve out its own space with the iPod Hi-Fi, Apple couldn’t help but draw comparisons to speaker offerings already available. ? That much was clear during Steve Jobs’ presentation, which included images of some of the current “homeâ€ speakers on the market, including JBL’s $180 On Stage and Bose’s $300 SoundDock (which Playlist considers desktop rather than home speakers, incidentally)…

Last Wednesday I rolled playback from my iPod. The signal chain was: iPod running Oscemote (generating OSC messages), logged into a Wifi network created by my MacBook Pro, which is running Osculator. Osculator listens to OSC messages and parses them into MIDI events, then sends them back out. In my case, it was sending them into Logic Pro, which I had configured to take specific incoming MIDI events and use them to control the transport. Timecode was an audio track within Logic. I configured this mess to recognize two commands: Play and Back to Start. For the trial run, I kept it simple - but this could be easily expanded to include cue points, scrub forward/backwar…

With very few people having bought into Thunderbolt this may well be the demise. Superspeed USB 3 "USB 3.0 will be encroaching on Thunderbolt's territory with support for external devices that require high-speed data rates like SSDs and secondary monitors." http://appleinsider.com/articles/13/01/07/superspeed-usb-30-to-rival-thunderbolt-speeds-in-2014

It seems like no matter what webpage I visit these days I have to click out of an annoying pop up ad or video that automatically starts streaming. I normally browse in Safari and have pop-ups blocked. Just wondering if there's a better way of blocking all the commercials. Any info is appreciated.

Is the Mac Mini a dead product? There is speculation that it has been "end of lifed" by Apple and not yet replaced by any product. 15:46 EDT Gizmodo reports that the Mac Mini is no longer available to resellers and may finally have been terminated as the lowest-priced (and remarkably reliable) Mac model: Apple Stops Mac Mini Shipments to Retailers, Says to Expect No More The Mac Mini may be pronounced dead as soon as today's Apple earnings conference call, as two major retailers in Europe have confirmed to me that they can't order any more of the little computers. While this could signal an updated model coming in, they have been told by Apple to expect no mor…

Anyone know of a custom DC to DC power supply available for the current Mac Pro? I may be building out a video cart soon and trying to go over some of my options.

Just a heads up..... It seems like quite a few of us host personal/resume sites on mac.com accounts, so you should all know they will be shut down in June 2012. With iCould becoming a free service in the Fall, they are phasing out MobileMe/iTools/whatever. iWeb won't be updated again, and the one click updating will be gone. In theory the current iWeb should keep running under 10.7, but you would need host it elsewhere. Kind of a bummer! I haven't figured out what I'm going to do yet. I have done hand coded HTML sites, PHP etc but iWeb is so easy to make a clean site that's easy to update. It doesn't get a lot of traffic, but the traffic it does get is often…

Any ideas on how to do this? This is easy on XP - though lots of people don't know about it. Also, I have never been able to figure out if I can use the keyboard shortcuts menu on the System Preferences pane to do this. It simply won't work. I'd be happy if i can say - hit Apple-Option-C to start the calculator. -vin

Hello everyone! Hope you had a fantastic day of rest with family and friends this weekend. I am looking into getting either a new laptop or tablet, but not sure what to get for the best price around $300.00 (US). Requirements: (aside from cost effective): Universal connectivity (meaning I can swap SD cards to increase memory and import/export data from one terminal to another like hard drives or smart phones). Capable to use programs such as Wave Agent, or record to Computer type programs, Boom Recorder or similar being of of them. I apologize if I am being vague, I tend to do that. Please feel free to ask me to clarify anything am not making clear. …

Hey, my colleagues bought a brand new mac pro in our office we mainly use for video transcoding, copying files, reading SxS n stuff. Now we need an audio interface we want to use to listen to and to analyze our recorded / transcoded audio with wave agent, Adobe Audition etc. There has to be: - good sound 24/96 (yes, really?) - ideal: XLR out for our Genelecs (or TRS) - low latency - XLR input that accepts line level - very good headphone amplifier - not needed: mic amplifier, 48v, multitrack i/o, guitar in, phono, 7.1 ... - price: unfortunately lower than RME league So what do you recommend? I just got a (used) Macbook 2G Intel Core Duo and I'm trying to get LecNet2 to work properly. The Windows / Parallels combo works great (makes me wonder why anyone would buy a PeeCee, but I digress). When I download and install the LecNet2 software, it runs, but won't see the Venue. Parallels sees the "VR" in the USB selection, but not the LecNet software. I've re-installed everything. I'm usually pretty good at figuring this stuff out eventually, but this one has me stumped. I've installed version 4 and then version 5 Parellels I've installed both Windowz XP and then Windowz 7 Latest version of LecNet2 from the Lectro D/L site. Parallels sees the Venue. Ideas…

Apple OS X 10.5 - Leopard is officially arriving on October 26th. Apple's list of things that are new in 10.5: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/300.html Regards, Jeff Wexler

I installed Leopard OSX 10.5 on one of my Macs, a fairly old single core 1.8 ghz tower (pretty much at the lower limit for system requirements) and the install was REALLY SLOW --- over an hour, longer than any other install I have ever done. Also, Apple has reduced the status states reported on during the installation to just 2: Checking install DVD and Installing, so you don't get any reassuring detail (installing system components, installing languages, optimizing system, etc.) just 2 very slow moving status bars. What I don't like: 1. The new Dock is absolutely a case of EYE CANDY with the look lending nothing new to the functioning of the Dock, and in my opinion i…

Lion Reviews Are Out: 'Great Value', 'Shakes Things Up', 'Very Few Bugs' Wednesday July 20, 2011 12:13 pm PDT by Jordan Golson Now that Lion has been released, NDA's are lifted and reviews are starting to come in. Here are some choice excerpts: David Pogue - New York Times: In Mac OS X 10.7, known as Lion, Apple went with the “shake things up” philosophy. It follows an old Apple pattern: embrace what’s cool and progressive, and ruthlessly jettison what it considers antiquated. That’s great if you love stuff that’s cool and progressive, and not so great if you hate people moving your cheese... The Lion upgrade, in other words, is classic A…

Ok so I know this has been addressed in lesser forms but I am trying to put together a master list. I have finally come off the fence and become a pad person or rather purchased a couple of iPads for use at home and work. I am looking to populate mine with the relevant apps for sound and camera problem is for every good one there are several that just don't quite work. so what should I look at for sound and camera work. I'm talking slate, logging, equipment inventory, working up quotes, anything else you can think of? Also apps that talk to each other if there are any, a dp had one last year for his dslr slate that if I had my own iPad would have linked to my…

Logic Pro X 1 2 3

- from Macworld review Those who’ve seen the Roman numeral X slapped onto Final Cut Pro may approach this release with some initial trepidation. Has Logic Pro been stripped of vital features to make it more accessible to GarageBand users? Is Apple abandoning professional audio engineers and musicians to cater to the prosumer user? No and no. While Logic Pro has indeed adopted some of the look of Final Cut Pro X—with its dark visage and panes that can be invoked or dismissed as the mood strikes—Apple’s digital audio workstation (DAW) has lost none of its power and gained valuable features on just about every front. I was upset by Apple dropping Firewire in the new aluminum MacBook since many of us had relied on prior MacBooks and iBooks for our work. What I only just realized is that Apple's currently shipping least expensive portable, the so-called White MacBook, still has Firewire. Even though this is the lowest model going (and probably will be E O L sometime soon), for $900. you can get a pretty decent portable for Boomrecorder, Metacorder, etc. excerpt from MacWorld: "Externally identical to the last white MacBook, the new 2GHz model has the same number of peripheral connections (a pair of USB 2.0 ports and a single FireWire 400 port) and keeps the same mini-DVI port, as opp…

For those interested, Apple has seen a meteoric rise in market share over the last year or so. Here are some of the figures: According to preliminary data from NPD, Apple reportedly achieved 14 percent of the U.S. retail PC market share in February 2008, up from 9% just a year ago. This represents 60 percent unit growth and 67 percent revenue growth year-over-year. Mac Notebook sales were up 64% year-over-year and Mac Desktops up 55% year-over-year, with strong sales of the MacBook Air this February. In 2001, Apple launched their retail store initiative with the slogan "5% down, 95% to go", referring to market share. - JW
