Microsoft bombshell: no EFI support for Vista Digg: Microsoft revealed today that it will not support EFI booting for Windows Vista on its launch. The news will be a shock for owners of Intel Macs who had hoped they would be able to dual-boot between Windows Vista and OS X. Intel Macs only support booting via EFI. I don't know what "EFI" is. Could one of the more computer saavy people here fill me in? Regards, Jeff Wexler

Dear Jeff, Terrific site! My wife is getting annoyed with me borrowing her Powerbook: I have to make a decision “wife or Powerbookâ€. Over 30years of wife and only two years of Powerbook, I find that the Powerbook logic is easier to understand….. All that said... I have to get another wife that has an Apple or buy my own to use with the Motu Traveler, Cameo, & Deva V, for either Boom recorder or Metacorder. I'm a fan with great respect of your diligence in your research to gaining a good understanding in these matters and your benevolence in sharing your knowledge. In my limited practical use of Apples I am considering the Mini Mac or Ibook 12â€ both …

thought I share my finding with Airfoil. Airfoil (http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/) is a software that lets you send any audio source from your Mac to a speaker within your wifi-network. So far I used to send audio to my stereo by using an Apple Airport-Express. Now I wanted to add a small speaker in an adjoining room. I choose a small bluetooth speaker and thought I could send my audio just in parallel to Airfoil via bluetooth. Well you can but there is (a different) delay which would lead to some echo between the 2 rooms. After installing the Speakers app (free) (http://www.rogueamoeba.com/airfoil/speakers.php) on my MBP and routing it´s output to the bl…

I just got my hands on the new Windows 10 and it is awful! What were they thinking? It looks VERY retro, incompatible with every single software application, incredibly sluggish and ugly as hell. I was thinking of leaving the Mac and going with Windows but after looking at this... forget about it! Wait a minute. I think it might be Windows 1.0, not 10. Missed the decimal point I guess. I might give Windows 10 a whirl when it comes out.

Just upgraded to my new 15.3" Macbook Pro. My old Powerbook G4 of course had a modem where I could send faxes over my land line. I used FAXstf Pro. What do you recommend for Internet faxing? There are multiple choices that give you a fax phone number and use email. The costs are all over the map, from about $17/mo. down to about $3/mo. Your experiences and advice will be appreciated. Also thoughts on any FW800 - FW 400 hubs, etc. Of course the moment I purchased it, I read that Apple now delivers them with non-reflective screens. I'm used to this. RL

Greetings, all My MBP has been a workhorse for many tasks, but in the last year or so has been very sluggish in the WiFi department - losing signal, etc. To my tech mind, obviously an antenna problem, but Apple support has been skirting around the issue for months. Gurus at Apple store not able to find issues with their extreme in-store wifi, advisors from Apple having me go back to Mavericks, and re install everything, no improvement. I will keep digging away, but I do find my reasonable concerns and experience in the RF world are being ignored. Is this a systemic Apple thing, or the problem with the whole tech world at this point? …

The new iMacs introduced today at the Apple Event are utilizing a dual drive system that they call Fusion Drive. Utilizing a conventional spinning hard drive and a Flash or Solid State Drive, computer performance is greatly enhanced. It should be noted, as the article below points out, this is not a simple caching system. The Mac OS is actually doing a lot of fairly sophisticated dynamic management of these two drives. Apple's New 'Fusion Drive' Not a Typical Hybrid Drive Tuesday October 23, 2012 7:25 pm PDT by Arnold Kim Amongst the many new products Apple introduced today, they also announced a new storage option called Fusion Drive. Apple's website desc…

Testing the ‘Apple tax’: What would it cost to build a Windows version of the new Mac Pro? By Zach Epstein -re-posted from website, article by Zach Epstein The new Mac Pro is the most powerful and flexible computer Apple has ever created, and it’s also extremely expensive — or is it? With a price tag that can climb up around $10,000, Apple’s latest enterprise workhorse clearly isn’t cheap. For businesses with a need for all that muscle, however, is that steep price justifiable or is there a premium “Apple tax” that companies will have to pay? Shortly after the new Mac Pro was finally made available for purchase last week, one PC enthusiast set out to answer that …

Logic Pro X 1 2 3

- from Macworld review Those who’ve seen the Roman numeral X slapped onto Final Cut Pro may approach this release with some initial trepidation. Has Logic Pro been stripped of vital features to make it more accessible to GarageBand users? Is Apple abandoning professional audio engineers and musicians to cater to the prosumer user? No and no. While Logic Pro has indeed adopted some of the look of Final Cut Pro X—with its dark visage and panes that can be invoked or dismissed as the mood strikes—Apple’s digital audio workstation (DAW) has lost none of its power and gained valuable features on just about every front. With very few people having bought into Thunderbolt this may well be the demise. Hey, my colleagues bought a brand new mac pro in our office we mainly use for video transcoding, copying files, reading SxS n stuff. Now we need an audio interface we want to use to listen to and to analyze our recorded / transcoded audio with wave agent, Adobe Audition etc. There has to be: - good sound 24/96 (yes, really?) - ideal: XLR out for our Genelecs (or TRS) - low latency - XLR input that accepts line level - very good headphone amplifier - not needed: mic amplifier, 48v, multitrack i/o, guitar in, phono, 7.1 ... - price: unfortunately lower than RME league So what do you recommend? I just swapped my old office+video Mini for a new Mini running 10:11:6, and decided to see what else was around for my simple video edit needs beyond FCP7. Before I bought into Premiere I thought I'd try Resolve, since A: it's used by lots of DIT and colorist folks I know and B: is free. So far so good. Anyone else using Resolve as an editor? One thing I'm not happy about so far, vs. FCP7: the rendering seems very slow--hardly faster than real time playback.

Just moving this discussion over to the "Computers" section... speaking as a guy who's heavily used Macs since 1986 (I held off until the Mac SE came out), to me, the operating system of choice is just a means to an end. I'm annoyed by Mac OSX, Linux, and Windows all the time. They all suck, they're all unreliable, and they're all evil. In more than 30 years of dealing with computers, I still don't trust them, and I use a whip and a chair to get what I need out of them. But Mac OSX gets out of my way better than Windows -- in my experience. When I use a Mac, the OS disappears and all I'm aware of is doing what I need to do. Windows and Linux just get in the way and a…

I just read an extensive article titled "The malware myth" which addresses the whole issue of whether the Mac will eventually wind up just as messed up as most Windows PC's as more and more people use Macs everyday. There are things mentioned specifically about the inner workings of Windows (like the Windows Registry) that I don't really understand but seem to be fundamental to this issue in relation to the two operating systems. The entire article is posted on my blog: http://jwsound.net/WP/?page_id=32 - Jeff Wexler

I've bought myself a 2012 mac mini- I've seen the Gotham Sound DC conversion instructions, but am wondering what kind of tolerance it'll take voltage-wise...Will it be ok with a LiFePO4 battery hooked up directly or will it need a 12V regulator? I've had a look at max current draw and it looks like it's 85W (8A at 12V should be enough) Any experiences after having it done?

By looking at the specs I do not see a reason why it should not run snow leopard operation system since snow leopard is a PC OS. I am not very happy with the video card but for nothing video intensive it is an excellent little device. Wave agent anybody?

I'm about to buy a 744T recorder and want to buy a MacBook to burn deliverable CD-Rs as well as a platform for future Boom Recorder use. It's been suggested I use Roxio Toast as a burner program. Any comments? Do I need this software, or is there effective software already bundled in the Mac? This will be my first Apple computer. The other option is to use the SD/ Panasonic DVD RAM unit. Any insights welcome. Chris Newton
