I'm curious if anyone has upgraded a Mac Mini to the new Core 2 Duo chip or knows someone who has (or can). I assumed that Apple would do this themselves, but they don't seem to be in any great hurry, as there's not even rumors of a new Mac Mini with the faster processor. Thanks for any information that you may have! Regards, Noah Timan

Hey 788t users.. Got one more for you.. This little utility will generate roll numbers for you..You can enter Pre Text that will show up in front of the Roll Number.. You can set how many Numbers are generated. I cap it to 70. You set which number the roll will end..Along with a few other settings you can just play with and figure it out pretty quick.. Just make a change and press Generate button and the result will display below the button. Again, on your iOS device, you enter an email address to send to.. If you have a Mac or PC, the Save button will show up to allow you to save to your desktop. Once on your computer simply connect your 788t to your computer and drag ov…

Apple - iPad - What is iPad? The Apple Newton was the first Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) and was released in 1993. The Newton featured handwriting recognition which received a significant amount of bad press on launch. The recognizer improved significantly in the subsequent releases but it was never quite able to shake the bad reputation. The Newton line was discontinued by Steve Jobs himself after his return to Apple. While most people still carry a negative connotation with Apple's Newton, it was an ahead-of-its-time sort of device that had a hardcore fan base in its day.

There is an excellent and thorough article available that discusses legacy ports and technology with a good history of the computer industry on this issue. It is a long article but helps to understand the relationships between technology development, manufacturing costs and marketing, consumer acceptance and so forth. It is a good read for anyone wishing to add to their knowledge about these things and aids in thoughtful analysis of the current state of computer hardware development. I believe there is useful information here but I need to warn everyone that the article IS rather Mac-centric (I am sure no one here is surprised by that). READ IT HERE Regards, Jeff W…

The interview at the D5 Conference where Steve Jobs and Bill Gates got together to talk about their history, the history of computers, the present and the future, is available now as a free download at the iTunes Store. You can download either an Audio only podcast or the full video (over an hour running time for the video but I don't know how long to download). It is well worth a look if you haven't seen it yet. Hello, I have found a few cheap USB Wireless N adapters on eBay for my kids' G4 MacMini (they complain the web is too slow). Just wondering if anyone here has used one of these. Thanks, Robert

Mac malware has made the leap to Facebook and is now spreading virally, claiming to be a video of IMF boss Dominique Strauss-Kahn. beware: The fake anti-virus attack first appears in your timeline as a message apparently posted by one of your friends. http://www.zdnet.com/blog/hardware/mac-defender-malware-now-spreading-virally-via-facebook/13064?tag=nl.e589

Does anyone have the new iMac with the glossy screen? There has been a lot of discussion about this being a really stupid decision from Apple since evidentially it is almost impossible to avoid a reflection of the user no matter what the lighting --- the screen itself is more than adequate to illuminate the user producing a stunningly clear reflection. I know some people have had experiences with glossy screens (they were very prevalent in the Windows laptop world before Apple even shipped any portables with glossy screens) so what is the general consensus? I tried to clean my very old keyboard that I use with my Mac and I killed it. So, I ordered a new keyboard and decided to try the new slim keyboard (that draws on the design of the keyboard on the MacBooks). I have been using it now for a day and I love it. Of course it is pretty to look at, as with all Apple products, but if it were only pretty to look at it would be a bad thing if a keyboard succumbed to what Courtney refers to as Steve Jobs' obsession with "looks" over function. I am not a touch typist since I learned to type at a very early age --- actually before I even knew any real words, so I am now a fery fast "hunt & peck" even though I really don't have to …

I desperately need a new office/studio computer--not really for audio editing but for file upload/downloads, office stuff and etc, with maybe a little light ProTools LE work thrown in. The best bang for the buck seems to be the Mini Core Duo (w/ superdrive) and a non-Apple monitor. How have these computers held up for those using them? 4 USB ports would be convenient. I'm not looking to DC mod the thing or mount it on a cart, although the small size might mean that it gets used on location occasionally. Philip Perkins

from Mac Rumors site: "Appleinsider is backtracking on their claims from last year that the Mac mini was set to be discontinued. According to the rumor site, they've received word to the contrary: For the first time in nearly a year, however, people familiar with the matter tell AppleInsider there's new life in the Mac mini department, where a small team of engineers have recently been tasked with gutting the diminutive desktop and applying fresh internals. The Mac mini is expected to accompany the rest of the Mac line to the new Penryn Core 2 Duo processors. Specs are expected to start at 2.1GHz with the same GMA X3100 graphics processor used in the current MacB…

From the Business page briefing in today's Washington Post: AT&T, the exclusive U.S. carrier for Apple's iPhone, will begin selling the device without a contract for the first time. The 8-gigabyte model will sell for $599 and the 16-gigabyte model will go for $699, AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel said. The offer, available next Thursday, will let customers sign up for month-to-month plans with AT&T. Best regards, Jim

This may take care of some of the issues some folks may be having with 10.6.0. It is a fairly small update - less than 10 megs.

If you would like to update your phone a few hours before its officially released. http://www.macrumors.com/2008/07/10/iphone-2-0-firmware-5a347-available-early/ Once again, digging through Apple's XML files has revealed the url to the iPhone 2.0 Firmware that is presently available on Apple's servers. One of our readers found this new firmware image: iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-4955.20080710.bgt53/iPhone1,2_2.0_5A347_Restore.ipsw) This build is slightly higher than the one of the latest iPhone Firmware Beta (5A345) which was also spotted on shipping iPhone 3Gs. Despite the filenam…

I seem to remember someone asking about audio conversion software for the Mac. There is a new version of Sound Grinder available that could be useful. I have only limited personal experience with an older version but it did do what it was supposed to do. http://www.monkey-tools.com/pages/products/sgmain.htm Regards, Jeff Wexler

Hi all, I've just installed Boot Camp and am doing some testing to see if I can get rid of my Windows only notebook and came across a really wierd problem and was hoping someone here might have a suggestion. I'm rendering a video on the Mac (in Windows) and my output is targetting an external drive (Seagate 300 GB FW). I can see the render writing the files out, but when it is done, and I shut down and start the other computer, the files are gone. There is just one file in the folder, called change.log. Any ideas? I really want to switch to the Mac for everything (it renders the same video 1 hour faster - huge difference). Thanks in advance! Phil

I am looking into some software that shares quite a lot of similar attributes to other programs I have used but adds one feature, support for Broadcast Wave timecode metadata, that I have not seen. From the TwistedWave website: TwistedWave can read and save music metadata, such as the artist name, song title or album art from files in the aiff, wav, mp3, mp4, flac and ogg/vobis format. Additionally, TwistedWave supports BWAV metadata, as well as Soundminer metadata for wav and aiff files. Furthermore, these metadata can be saved as foreign metadata in flac files. ... TwistedWave handles multichannel files as easily as mono or stereo files. Multichannel Audio Units c…

Apple has released a re-vamped version of Logic which includes as well the new Soundtrack Pro 2 (that ships already as part of Final Cut Studio). At the core of Logic Studio is Logic Pro 8, Apple’s professional digital audio workstation. Among the changes in Logic is a new, single window interface. According to Apple, the interface now allows instant access to music creation and production functions, including snap-to-transient selection and sample accurate editing directly in the Arrange window. Logic Pro 8 also features new audio production tools like Quick Swipe Comping and dynamic channel strip creation. In addition to surround production capabilities, the ne…
