Interesting price-comparison between Macs and PCs over on the Computerworld website. While it's widely believed by many Windows users that Macs are the "overpriced" hardware choice, this PC-centric website comes to the opposite opinion. A couple of caveats: the piece only compares laptops and low-priced machines like the iMac, but still the article is fairly even-handed. Read what they have to say here: http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&taxonomyName=macintosh_os&articleId=9023959&taxonomyId=123&intsrc=kc_feat Any of you who have anti-Mac friends and co-workers might use this as a little positive ammunition…

So here I am seventy years old and after fifty odd years in the business I have been dragged not quite screaming into the 21st century by the purchase of an Ipad 3. I told the assistant editor that I was thinking of sending the sound report (Once I'd bought the software) on PDF by email. "No bloody good to me I haven't got internet and what's the point of separating the sheets from the CF card as I need them both at the same time to sync rushes." I thought the lad had a good point especially his edit suite is less than a hundred feet from me. So I beg the question of all the people doing sound sheets on I phones, I Pads or android whatever what do YOU do with them? …

Lots of great news on the new iPhone 4 out there: Engadget Gizmodo MacRumors There's some amazing stuff in this phone, including the noise-cancelling microphone, a better transmitting/receiving antenna (the edge of the entire metal case), and much longer battery life (300 hours of standby). I was skeptical of the last phone, but I'm sold on this one. The 720P HD video quality looks very good for a device this small, and the camera is much improved, too. And those who have the time and patience can watch Steve Jobs' full 1-hour presentation here: Apple Streaming Quicktime There's a hilarious moment when Jobs can't get a webpage to load because the WiFi…

I watched the posted Guided Tour of the new iLife 08 software suite and I was struck again by the value of the Mac. I really don't know what software programs are bundled for free with most PC purchases and I have to admit that I also don't know how much can be accomplished with just the Microsoft software that ships with all PC's. I have a favor to ask of my Windows using friends --- would you look at the Guided Tour online and then let me know if a Windows based PC, out of the box, can this easily and elegantly accomplish all of these things. I know I have been accused of being a Mac bigot (or kinder, a Mac zealot) but I really feel that no other company, other than …

The latest ranking in the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) shows Apple still topping the list as highest in customer satisfaction for personal computers. Apple's customer satisfaction score reached a record 85, which was 10 points higher than Dell, its closest competitor. "We haven't seen anything like this before, where a company scores 10 points over its nearest rival," said Claes Fornell, the head of the American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI), conducted quarterly by the University of Michigan. Fornell believes that part of Apple's climb in customer satisfaction has been due to a particularly poor response to Window's Vista, which may have contribu…

This is a $2 cable, but with $12 shipping it's frustrating. I still don't know that this experiment is going to work. This is to power a ATA/IDE to CF adapter I just purchased, which arrived without a power cable (darned fine print)!! I'm hoping someone might have one in a pile of computer cables somewhere, and would be willing to stick it in an envelope for me for a few bucks. It's more than just being cheap... sending a tiny cable in a box via UPS ground just seems like overkill! It looks like the attached photo, but I only really need one of the smaller ends. LP4 male to SP4 female. Thanks, Robert

I updated last week using a beta version and I installed the official one yesterday. I immediately noticed significant performance enhancements in several areas even on my 2010 Mac Pro. And this is what BJ Buchalter (Metric Halo) says about it: "In fact, we have found that Mojave actually fixes a number of old macOS bugs and generally improves performance all-around (especially CPU load for graphics updates and Ethernet packet handling). It also appears that Apple has improved the user experience when installing new kernel extensions (drivers). High Sierra had a number of UX problems and bugs with third party driver installation that seem to h…

Here's my issue. I work on a small video production using an SD 442 mixer. The show now wants to incorporate Skype calls into the show. I plan on using a Turtle Beach Amigo II USB card to send the Skype caller's audio from the Macbook's USB port to a speaker so the host can hear the caller and also to send the host's microphone back to the Skype caller from a direct out of the 442. Simple. The problem arises when the director needs to use the HDMI port to send the Skype caller's audio and video as an ISO source to an external recording device. My thought is that the USB and HDMI ports do NOT work independently of each other and that the HDMI port will override what I'm tr…

This looks cool but the description from the developer is loaded with all sorts of disclaimers. Could be a fun toy but not terribly accurate considering the developer states that readings could be off by as much as plus or minus 6db! from the developer: "Due to popular demand, SoundMeter has arrived to turn your iPhone into a handheld sound level meter (SLM). The iPhone’s built-in and headset microphones exhibit a remarkably flat frequency response, making them suitable for basic sound level measurements. However, due to sample rate limitations and frequency response degradation, SoundMeter is not recommended for use with the built-in microphone of first-generation i…

This is Dell's version of the LG EA93 21:9 monitor. I actually like that it is sort of small vertically, as I can have clear line of site to my projector and speakers without a giant screen in the way. ProTools timeline will look good and still have real estate when I pull the clip bin out a bit for legibility. I'm thinking that even dual head would be cool, although perhaps stretching the peripheral viewing angle a bit too much - hmm... will try one first and see how it goes.

I was upset by Apple dropping Firewire in the new aluminum MacBook since many of us had relied on prior MacBooks and iBooks for our work. What I only just realized is that Apple's currently shipping least expensive portable, the so-called White MacBook, still has Firewire. Even though this is the lowest model going (and probably will be E O L sometime soon), for $900. you can get a pretty decent portable for Boomrecorder, Metacorder, etc. excerpt from MacWorld: "Externally identical to the last white MacBook, the new 2GHz model has the same number of peripheral connections (a pair of USB 2.0 ports and a single FireWire 400 port) and keeps the same mini-DVI port, as opp…

I have TW Cable for internet access. My cable comes in, goes into my cable modem, goes out by ethernet to my Airport Express for WiFi to the house. The problem is, my kids' MacMini is slow and uses wireless G. It's near the TV and modem in the living room. Can I use a 1x2 hub or splitter to split the ethernet signal from the modem to feed an ethernet cable into the Airport Express and the MacMini? This ought to make their internet connection faster, right? Also, does anyone have an old ethernet splitter and/or 15' ethernet cable lying around? I could just go to Best Buy, but I am CRAZY broke! I installed Leopard OSX 10.5 on one of my Macs, a fairly old single core 1.8 ghz tower (pretty much at the lower limit for system requirements) and the install was REALLY SLOW --- over an hour, longer than any other install I have ever done. Also, Apple has reduced the status states reported on during the installation to just 2: Checking install DVD and Installing, so you don't get any reassuring detail (installing system components, installing languages, optimizing system, etc.) just 2 very slow moving status bars. What I don't like: 1. The new Dock is absolutely a case of EYE CANDY with the look lending nothing new to the functioning of the Dock, and in my opinion i…

I moved from windows many years ago because I got tired of their pop-up windows to update this and that. Now, I'm starting to get a freaking Adobe Flash Player update window every 10th time I visit this site. Does anyone know how to disable this?

Using a Macbook Pro that, of late, has started to have problems when transferring files to and from various drives. Frequently, a message will appear that says a file is in use. Then, when I hit okay, the progress bar won't go away even after hitting the "x," the drives can't be ejected, the Finder can't be quit and the computer can't be restarted except by manually shutting off by holding down the power button. Then, it takes several tries (plugging and unplugging) for the drives to be recognized even after repeated computer reboots. I use MacJanitor and have repaired permissions several times. I even completely re-installed the operating system (10.5.. Help! A.

Apple, describing it as a “core violationâ€ of worker safety, said that it had ordered the contractor…
