My wife Carol worked on a few of the movies that Art has done since they both worked with Jack Nicholson a lot. I have posted these pictures before but I am posting 2 of them again for those who haven't seen them. In one you can see the young AR in the upper left hand corner (talking to I believe my old friend Brian McCarty). - Jeff Wexler

I found some old movie pictures, some scanned from a book by Leonard Maltin on cinematography, and a few of them show some very old microphones and booms. The one from "Medium Cool" shows the huge blimp my father had built to keep his Eclair CM3 camera quiet (sort of) and Chris Newman's boom operator using a rather long Sennheiser 805 microphone. - Jeff Wexler

Hello All, I am a big fan (and regular visitor) of this site since its inception and an occasional poster of late. Thanks Jeff for an invaluable contribution to our community. I truly appreciate your initiative and ongoing effort with this discussion group. A few months ago I decided to build a new sound cart and started looking at other mixers' rigs on the web. I visited several of you on set, taking pictures and asking questions. Well, a busy year of docu mixing, reality supervising/mixing, and occasional scripted gigs ensued and the project largely got put on hold. I've gotten by okay and I'm actually glad I waited, because I have a much clearer idea now o…

I was in the Louvre about 2 months ago, and they were trying to update some of their sculpture exhibits by having modern artists create pieces that interacted with the traditional Greco-Roman statues. Lo and behold, there was a statue of a boom operator capturing the silent majesty of a white marble Zeus. Score one for the sound folk!

In January of 2005 I was in Sumatra, Indonesia to document the aftermath of the tsunami and the relief efforts that were taking place. At the end of our stay we were in the capital city of Medan, preparing to fly back home the next day, when the producer learned that one of the country's top Gamelan orchestra's was giving a concert that evening to raise funds for the victims. Naturally he saw this as a great opportunity to get authentic traditional Indonesian music for use in the project. After a number of hurried phone calls by our interpreter/fixer we obtained permission to record part of the show. I was using an AKG C451 with a CK8 shotgun capsule for my boom mic and h…

An amateur photographer just visiting the set in Allenford, California, took this great picture of all of us working on Bound For Glory. I don't know who Erik is but he was kind enough to find me and my father and sent this picture. There is so much going on in this cramped frame --- Hal Ashby, two cameras, a Panavision camera and an Arri BL, Pat Suraci's legs seen standing on the Fisher platform, and then there is me: Nagra 4.2 with 3 old RCA style black knobs fitted, sitting on top of my modified Sela which has Kepex and Gain Brain modules in a custom built box by Ivan Kruglak. Enjoy. - Jeff Wexler

I had to think where to post this --- "Images of Interest" seemed good, it is after all "images" with motion and sound of course. So, any of you interested in the rare end credits (it was only on a handful of prints when the film was released and is missing from most of the video releases) can see it on my website http://web.mac.com/jwsound/Site/video.2a.html It is also a chance to see Don Coufal's intriguing and cryptic credit: "Boom Operator (and then some)" Regards, Jeff Wexler

Just watched this film on TV, and it's still one of my favorite Sci-Fi flicks. I saw that Tommy Causey mixed, and after a short search, found some nice BTS stills on The Official John Carpenter Website Including this one of Jeff Bridges in front of the sound cart: Any good stories from this set? Thanks, Tom

Hi all, Here are some photos of our SU cart, made by Rob Stalder from Rastorder, in Australia. It has already been dubbed 'the darlek' by some of those who worked with me when we were running it in. The wiring is still a work in progress, but the important thing is that it works. Cosmetics of running cables will be resolved soon. We need to replace the antenna bar with something more sturdy akin to Richards new bar ( http://www.jwsound.net/SMF/index.php?topic=2590.msg17817#new ) Lights are the littlite LED Edirol R4 Pro is a Place holder. Upgrading soon most likely to a 788t. Comments or sugestions welcomed. Thanks, Michael and Tfer

Hey everyone. I bought a Quad box a few weeks back, so I thought to myself, hell just design my own antenna set up. So, here's the finished rack! Ok, so here's how I did it.. First I bought 3 feet of 1-1/2 in x 1-1/2 in 14 gauge square tubbing. Sealed it up with welded end caps, and then welded small tubes on the bottom center and offset on one side. I then cut holes in the tubs, added 3/8 nuts and found some handles to use as tighteners. Powdercoated the whole thing to match. These tubs fit over baby pins and tighten down. The Mass is a Murry top half of a C-Stand and was just purchased, and can mount to the cart af…

I just got back from Hamilton Bermuda, where I worked on a whirlwind production of a 60 minute interview show for TV One network. We were there to interview Bermuda's Elected leader, Premier Dr. Ewart Brown. I had to have a rig suitable for a 3 camera sit down interview, where "A" and "C" cameras had isos of the close-ups they were on, and "B" needed a stereo feed. I also needed a rig that could go out and do ENG field audio with walk and talk interviews as well. This also all had to fit in a Pelican case. My solution was the SD442, 744t, comtek 72 kit, tivoli PAL speaker for video village monitor (with a comtek plugged into it), 3 lectro 211 kits with Sankens and Rycote …

Hey all, I'm sure we have all had these type of experiences where the DOP assures everyone they will be shooting with the prac light on the set.... He ended up using 2x 2k HMI's and a set of KinoFlows.

Gotta stay up late tonight to acclimate for one-off night shoot tomorrow. I've been wanting to share about these Viewtainer brand containers. Frank Bradley turned me on to these a couple of years ago and I love them for various mounting supplies shown here including my favorite for plants, the lasso tie. I picked them up at OSH (a hardware store chain in LA). PG

This was taken in 1978 on the film " Butch and Sundance , The Early Days" . The fellow in white is Richard Lester , director with David on the far right , camera op. Bobby Stevens is hidden behind him . This " insert car " is being employed for a running shot of Tom Beringer and William Katt on horse back as they ride through a heavily wooded area and do a dialog scene in the Los Alamos region of New Mexico . On top of the stereo Nagra sits a mixer designed and built by David and it looked much like the ENG mixers of today . I was 19 years old and VERY green on this film, but it it has remained one of my fondest memories , David was an amazing force , a very…

Botswana to be exact... We are shooting a travel style show at the moment, I've been working for 21 days now without a day off, averaging 12 hours a day, but it has been amazing. We've crossed Botswana in military helicopters and C130 Hercules, and stayed at some of the most luxurious camps in the world, some costing more than USD$3000 per night! Hope you enjoy some of the happy snaps I took. Jason

As some of you know, I do a lot of music (or use to do a lot of music, seems that most of the old promoters have called it quits). When I record classical or acoustic music, I like to use a decca tree. This is one I made out of red oak. I used oak because it's sturdy, yet fairly light. I use a single stand that has two 40lbs bags at the base to keep it stable. I use metal shanks that I have drilled and tapped, so I can use knobs with screws for quickly assembling the rig. It does dip a bit at the far edge, but in two years worth of use, it has never fallen or broken (which makes me happy since there are usually about $5,000 worth of mics sitting on top of the bar. …

I was inspired by the picture of Eric Lamontagnes funky looking panel van to start this thread. Please post pics of your Sound cars/vans/trucks. It would be great to see how everyone deals with loading / unloading, transporting and securing there gear. I know i saw a picture on the trew Website of a converted ambulance a sound mixer has in Toronto !

I've wanted to go to a rack based sound cart for years, and tried on several occasions, but the base structure and stability were always the problem. Brett Grant-Grierson has built several carts for mixers in the LA area and I met up with him to start a new project. The start to finish photos can be found here: http://web.mac.com/pwpmixer/iWeb/pwpmixer/sound%20cart.html Here's a photo of the finished product, before the gear is mounted. ~pwp

This is the small upright cart that RastOrder builds --- not your typical sit down equipment cart but rather a small portable cart to set your bag and gear down on. RastOrder site - Jeff Wexler
