Andy Fischer who works with Cameron Crowe, vinyl films and vinyl records, is working on putting together a collection of the music from "Harold and Maude." He has gotten access to hundreds of stills taken on the movie and these are the only found record of my working on the movie --- pictured here with Colin Higgins and Steve Ferry (who was the prop master on the movie). We are working on the skeet-shooter bird feeder gag. As most of you know, I was working in the Art Department on that movie and it was that job that made the decision for me to start work in the film business. - JW

Since Jeff posted a photo of me and Emma Barham, who assisted Jeff on The Last Samurai, I though this photo would raise a few laughs. It was taked at the request of Gordon Moore (VP-Sales) to be used as a publicity photo for Lectrosonics. Virginia Hey (Zhaan) wore a DPA on her forehead, covered by the leading edge of her head scarf. This was taken just before her final appearance on the show. Cheers, David Glasser

Moe Chamberlain (Crew's brother) went in my place to China on "Mission Impossible 3". Here you see Moe and Robert "Max" Maxfield (Don Coufal is probably taking the picture). Regards, Jeff Wexler

Anything off the sound cart was always called going "over the shoulder" with the Nagra, just as we did all documentaries double system with film, this being way before video ENG "bag work" became common. Note the SOUND REPORT, the strips of camera tape on the lid of the Nagra 4.2 - JW

One of my longest visits to the set was in 1960 visiting my father shooting "The Hoodlum Priest" in St. Louis. I spent two months staying at the Chase Park Plaza Hotel and got to visit the set every day. It was a medium to lower budget movie and the night they had to make rain on the exterior, the local fire department helped out with fire hoses. - JW

My sound assistant in New Zealand: Emma Barham from Australia (recommended by David Glasser). She was terrific, great attitude and a very hard worker. - Jeff Wexler (my pictuture was based on the next picture which shows David & Emma together)

After seeing pictures of beautifully preserved old mixers on Jeff’s site, I was compelled to retrieve my first mixer, an Interface 12 X 4 from its case in the basement. I had not opened the case in more than a decade. Years of use and my humid Atlanta basement detract from the board’s original appearance. I ordered this board sight-unseen from Louis Stevenson in Texas. It was powered by 30V DC or mains. Most of the time I used only one input, but the over the years its 10 outputs and 4 aux outs came in handy. Com to boom and slate and track assignments worked well but there was no remote roll. It lived on a custom made cart that an old German machinist built …

Another one, this time created by a friend of ours from some of Don Coufal's images. This could be a poster for "The Last Samurai" featuring cinematographer John Toll. - JW

Sort of difficult to describe the blueish one, taken on "The Last Samurai". Artificial "fog" and color balance caused the blueish tint, shot is over one camera setup in the foregorund, through which a Camera Car with crane arm passes as a blur. The other is a Steadicam rig on a wheeled dolly, this shot in Italy on "Mission Impossible III" - JW

Just thought I'd say that I am really impressed with the photo by Don Coufal that greets people on this site. I don't know what format was used, or what it looks like as a print, but as it is, as the primary graphic on this site, it smokes.

just to get things going, here are two images of my sound cart (not very good photos, sorry). Monitor is a 10" Xenarc, Audio, Ltd. 2000 quad box next to it, Deva IV below that, Sound Devices 744T and then the Cooper 208. What is not seen is the new Mac Mini behind the Xenarc (that 's because it isn't there yet), the Cart Power Supply at the bottom of the cart that runs all the equipment.

the everpresent movie cops (at least on medium to big movies) helping out while shooting on Albert Broooks' "Defending Your Life" (mixed by Tommy Causey and boomed by Joe Brennan). The movie cops are an indispensible asset to the production sound department --- they can stop traffic! I remember on one job a relatively new producer put on the headphones and listened to a rehearsal and was horrified at the amount of traffic noise. He asked how I was going to stop all the traffic noise because he could hardly hear the actors' voices. I said not to worry, we won't have all that traffic noise when we actually roll. The next day at dailies this producer came up to me and said i…
