I found this behind the scenes, done by Stanley Kubricks daughter, Vivian, at age 17. I can't help but see the comfort level that the actors have with her, during what would seem to be some tough scenes to have a camera following around. She also edited and covered the show really well. I particularly like the cutting from film to her footage within the scene to be remarkable. I looked her up on IMDB to see if I've seen anything else she has done, and there doesn't seem to be anything listed there. She seemed to have a well understanding at her age, and the pedigree. I'm suprised she never did much else in the business. Then again, maybe she was smart. Enjoy, I know I did…

This is for you baby-boomer sound folks who remember film docs back in the old days. I've been working on a doc, being shot on a mini-digi "burrito cam". After much discussion+tests, I was able to convince the filmmakers (who are cutting the film themselves) to go full double system for sound. (They discovered that while the tinycam made pretty good pictures it badly sucked for sound, and the subject of the doc is a famous musician...). So they got a decent sounding camera mic to mount on the camera, I roll 24/48 on my rig and we sync with....the booper. We do LONG rolls (fewer sync points), and the shooter (old film guy, so knows the drill) shoots the booper whenev…

Unfortunately this cart is in the process of changing. Production took it upon themselves to load it in the truck. One of the front wheels, including metal on the frame ripped. They have graciously agreed to replace the cart

Wolf pointed this one out. It's a great picture of a Fisher Boom sitting in the wide open spaces of the Nevada Desert. The girl is Monroe. The co-star is Gable. The movie is "The Misfits" 1961.

I've wanted to go to a rack based sound cart for years, and tried on several occasions, but the base structure and stability were always the problem. Brett Grant-Grierson has built several carts for mixers in the LA area and I met up with him to start a new project. The start to finish photos can be found here: http://web.mac.com/pwpmixer/iWeb/pwpmixer/sound%20cart.html Here's a photo of the finished product, before the gear is mounted. ~pwp

Uluru – the 600m-year-old gigantic rock formation in the heart of Australia – was transformed by heavy downpours this week, with rainwater cascading down its 300-metre sandstone facades. The spectacular event was photographed by local environmental staff on Tuesday evening as a storm passed over the nation’s ‘red centre’. Uluru is in one of the driest regions of Australia and experiences extreme temperatures ranging from the high 40s in the daytime to below zero at night Friday 15 January 2016 All photos © Parks Australia - as seen on: http://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/gallery/2016/jan/15/ulurus-magnificent-waterfalls-landmark-transformed-by-rai…

I was impressed with photos I saw of George Flores' stroller sound cart (seen here) and I decided to go with the same stroller for my cart. The Petrol bag is sitting on a PSC Pelican LiFE battery connected to a Remote Audio Hot Strip, which routes power to the BDS on the bag. The Hot Strip also trickle-charges the battery when connected to external power. The Nomad is recording an eight-channel backup through AES using a standard VGA monitor cable connected to the Fusion. The antenna mast is a cheap light stand with the base removed and attached using Mafer clamps. I had a Lectrosonics rack mount multi-coupler modified by Victor at Location Sound so it could be u…

I didn’t take pictures but I just watched a couple of movies where mics were totally positioned wrong and it really made me laugh. One was the Dalton Trumbo biopic and the other was the Chess records film. Both show side address mics repeatedly being pointed at the source as if they were top address mics. Not to mention that some of the mics pictured had not been invented yet in some cases. I thought it would be funny to start a thread for people to post a screen shot whenever they see something like that!

Posting pictures of the almost finished Follow Cart, built from "scratch" with a hand drill and a hacksaw (as always). Still waiting for the right drawers (you know I'm on the case for aluminum drawers but NOT from StarCase) and then I will be able to complete. Two options for drawer installation: mounted directly in the "rack" rails (aluminum channel I have installed already) OR, mounted in SKB case, installed (but removable) on the cart. The SKB case, of course, provides the ability to take the case off and move it or ship it independently of the cart. The downside, I won't be able to have as many drawers, also takes up more room than just the drawers on their own.

Does anyone ever use one anymore? I recently had to put a center punch and pilot hole down inside of a long channel, through one object into another; it was not a job for a small hammer and an impact center punch, or a powered drill. A Yankee Screwdriver with a drill bit chuck adapter did the job. These were common when i was a child but are now discontinued and can be found on Ebay. Be aware that different Yankee Screwdriver models require an adapter that fits that model; most adapters fit on several, but not all models.

I was looking at some photos today and felt I should share my experience using Zaxcom's ZaxNet on the Lifetime movie, “Blue Lagoon: The Awakening.” I have been using Zaxcom gear on all of my projects for a couple years now and not long ago I started taking advantage of the benefits that ZaxNet provides. This project was filmed in March 2012. During my first conversation with the post department for this movie, I was told that they would be providing me with four timecode lock-it boxes (2 for cameras, 1 for my recorder, & 1 backup). I was able to talk them into letting me use my Zaxcom ERX1TCDs on the cameras with ZaxNet providing timecode from my recorder. Origin…

I finally got round to taking a few decent pictures of my cart. Here we go : Thats my cart all closed up and ready to roll around on set. On this angle you can see the top road case with front doors closed. Thats where all the gear is located. Below is a drawer that can slide forward. You can also see one of the removeable hooks that are at the back, as well as the antenna poles (manfrotto light stand centre piece) that are retracted, next to the boompoles. Here she is with the doors open to reveal the gear protected inside. you can also see the antenna poles extended (not fully extended for this picture, but they can reach up to 7-8 feet.) I had a…

So, while we were at IBC, we were made aware of a really cool bar called the Whisky Cafe. They have over 1500 different bottles of Whisky on hand, plus lots of other stuff. If you are ever in Amsterdam, and you enjoy yourself a good whisky, check this place out. Here are two pictures.

Cologne Cart 1 2

As an homage to Matthias Richter's long running thread, Berlin cart, I have called this one Cologne cart. This is to show my cart, but I would also like to encourage other Cologne based mixers, to show off their carts here, too. So my cart is based on two ABS cases. I am in no way a skilled handy worker, so this is not exactly beautiful craftsmanship and everything is improvised as I go along. I do try to think things through before building them, but more often than not that meant solving one problem while creating two new ones. All the parts are readily available at home depot or such like, except for the motors which I found on Ebay. I was so impresse…

A few photo's of my cart built from "ITEM" "MB" extrusion. It was built in late 2006 and features parts from Roadmaster - a local case manufacturer who suppled the aluminium panels, Skyway Tuff wheels, cable hooks, boom holders and cup holder from Rob Stalder and Middle Atlantic UCP connector panels. I must get around to labeling the connector panel.... David Madigan

I recently took some pictures of my old Sela mixer and thought some of you might be interested in seeing the complexity of my set-up from the early 1980's. Straight to 1 track - simple and sweet.

I think we can safely say there have been some pretty significant technological changes regarding the equipment we use today to make movies. On the set of "Cobra Woman", 1944 (and no, I didn't do that movie... I was asked to do "Cobra Woman II" but they wound up going to Romania and hiring locally).

Kind of a little bit of self-promotion, but not really. This is what I do on the side to sound. I've set up a little gallery, please check it out if you're interested. scopepic.tumblr.com Here's a taste, taken while I was on vacation at the end of last year.

Bret Haller, son of the late, great Michael Haller (Production Designer) pulled an image from the Criterion release of "Harold and Maude." This was my first job working on a movie, the job that made me abandon my plans to teach sociology and pursue a career in movies. I was hired as a P.A. in the Art Department but after the movie and after the decision that it would be my life's work, I wanted to do something more technical than the Art Department --- so, it would be Camera or Sound (and it wasn't going to be Camera!). In the picture you can see Hal Ashby, Colin Higgins (standing), Bud Cort and the two stand-ins (though I don't remember their names). I'm working on g…
