Word seems to be traveling fast, so I’ll go ahead and announce that Coffey Sound was purchased today, and is now a Trew Audio company. For the last several years, Coffey Sound has been owned by Telecorp, which also owned media related companies primarily involved with postproduction and unscripted (reality) television. As many here on the JWSound group can understand, a company with a niche as specific as sound for film and video production serves the industry best when driven first by a love and understanding of the craft and those who work in it, with the pursuit of profit being a necessary but distant second. With today’s purchase, this Los Angeles business will …

The PSC PowerMax Ultra is now available with an optional internal LiFE (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery. This newer battery technology provides high power density in a small and lightweight package. It is also much safer than the older lithium technologies as it does not suffer from runaway heat problems when short circuited or damaged. The batteries we use are not the motorcycle engine cranking application batteries as discussed here on JWsound. The batteries we use are designed for use at moderate power levels and will work great powering a sound cart. At the recent "Parade of Sound Carts" event, our cart was powered using this LiFE battery technology. Our P…

We have received a lot of requests over the years for a radio surveillance kit that also allows for the use of an MP3 player at the same time. We now have one. An interrupt circuit is engaged when the radio is keyed or when it senses an incoming signal. The music is re-engaged by simply pushing the separate PTT like switch on the cable. I have edited this entry based on feedback from Glenn and Howie at Zaxcom. Specifically I have removed quotes from a memo considered confidential between Zaxcom and their dealers, as well as some corrections to some of Cory's feature depictions. My changes are indicated by [brackets]. To The Jwsound Community: Glenn Sanders hand delivered our first shipping Nomad to Gotham earlier today, but it was somewhat of a mixed blessing. We knew that not all of the recorder's advertised features were completed, but our request to Glenn that Zaxcom openly show on their website the specific features that were missing (and their anticipated implementation dates) were met with …

Nomad is now shipping to our dealers. The current feature set includes all basic mixing and recording functions including many features not available in competitive mixer/recorders. In an effort to have total transparency and make sure that all customers are informed of the availability and status of nomad features both current and future, Zaxcom has asked its dealers as the last point of customer contact, to be sure to advise each customer of the status of the nomad feature set at the time of purchase. The Nomad feature set has many unique advanced features not found in any other mixer/recorder offering. These features will be activated through software upda…

Ambient Clockit Network - the next step in digital content production workflow As typical set-ups in film and multimedia productions get more and more sophisticated the extensive use of metadata has become essential for an effective work flow. These data are embedded into the files of the respective machines on recording. However, since no common file and metadata structure has been settled, each manufacturer saves in their best suiting configuration. Additionally, there is no interchange between the different recorders on the set which results in the need to extract and consolidate metadata tediously in post. This is where the Ambient Clockit Network co…

I saw this in another thread, but I figured I would place this in the proper bin. Notice below. Sound Devices is taking an aggressive, preventative step and recalling select CL-9 Linear Fader Controllers shipped in 2011. The CL-9 units in question may exhibit short-term or long-term failures due to faulty PC boards. If a failure were to occur, controls could activate without input from the user. The units being recalled are within a specific serial number range, CL-9 units with serial numbers between JJ0410349000 and JJ0411123002.* No additional CL-9 units are involved. Suspect PC boards will be replaced at Sound Devices or at an authorized S…

After years of not having a viable portable receiver option for their popular UHF-R line of pro wireless, Shure has introduced a very impressive new product. The UR5. The UR5 offers full frequency scan, infrared syncing, back lit LCD screen and powering options from AA to rechargeable battery packs. LSC is the first west coast dealer to have the UR5 in stock. We are pairing it with the venerable UR1 body pack transmitter and have pre-wired Voice Technology VT-500's to go with them (you can, of course, make your own mic choice). This give you very nice, high quality wireless option for around 2K. If you are local, come by for a demo. Thanks

As we transition deeper into the world of CF cards, pro audio dealers such as ourselves find themselves in a difficult position. Our customers need CF cards, would more often than not like to patronize their pro dealer of choice to get them but, find that pricing from online sites or big box retailers is significantly better than they can get from us. Specialty retailers such as ourselves, do not buy in the massive quantities that a Fry's or others who can who move huge numbers of them to the consumer world at large do. I currently offer name brand CF cards as a convenience for my customers, and they know they are paying a little bit more to save themselves a trip elsew…

The most common phone call/email support question I get at K-Tek is "how to untangle the coiled cable inside my boom pole". Well, I've decided to make some videos on this. The first one highlights dealing with our Avalon series of poles that have a CC bottom. I'll do another one dealing with our Klassic poles soon. Here is the first video.

Dearest sound community, Ambient Recording is known for tools handling hard topics,... sync, time code... underwater sound, boom, .... As you might well know Ambient has dedicated itself to all kind of known and unexpected problems a recordist may face in his everyday work. Our products cover little problem solvers and whole systems ranging from from obvious tasks like microphone booming over sync & timecode to the most extraordinary underwater recordings. This is a wide field alone but with the typical set becoming more and more complex so are the related complications that arise. In our tradition to bring solutions for people working in the field …
