The crew from Sound Devices is looking forward to getting out of still-snow-covered Wisconsin and seeing our friends in the production sound community. Please stop by and say hello at booth #C2849 and take a look at our latest. Also, Sound Devices has an audio PIT presentation on Tuesday, at 1:30p. It is perfectly timed so as to not interfere with the Satay Grill event later that evening. The audio PIT is close to the SD booth (which is close to most of the peers present here, too). Hope you see you there! Jon

Syncing Mad Max - Fury Road I had the pleasure to do an interview with Ben Osmo, Production Sound Mixer and Oliver Machin, Sound Department Coordinator & Vehicle FX Recordist about their work on Mad Max - Fury Road in the desert of Nambia, Africa. Three units with up to 12 cameras worked simultaniously, sometimes up to 7km (4.35 mi.) away from each other while driving with 60-90 km/h (37- 56 mph). The air filled with desert sand containing metallic parts that drastically decreased wireless range, while the VFX dpt wanted the camera to use the UTC time information from the GPS satellites to be used as the reference for timecode, which enabled cross referencing betw…

32’ Hydrascope with the Amphibian Remote Head, filming recently on location Black Park – ‘Little Chaos’ The most important thing to know about this was it was WET very, very WET. As you can see in this video we had rain machines lashing water over the equipment. In this particular scene we had the Amphibian Remote head and the 32’ Hydrascope. The camera itself, was in under-water housing, so they were able to completely submerge the camera if they wanted too. In this long scene, it was getting heavily splashed on the surface. With the Chapman equipment being waterproof this became a relatively straight forward scene to film. During shooting, they had to keep a…

Zaxcom has just released new software for the ERX1TCD that perfectly interfaces to the Canon 5D. Using an off the shelf 3.5mm cable, audio and time code are sent to the camera at mic level. No modification to the ERX1TCD is necessary. The time code is bandwidth limited and at a level that prevents crosstalk to the audio track. The ERX1TCD is a audio/time code RF receiver with built in time code generator providing a consistent time code feed under all RF conditions. Audio is transmitted via 100% digital transmission for a compander and noise free result. Software version 2.09 on the camera is required. Glenn Sanders President Zaxcom Inc.

Starting on Thurs, Nov 22 (Thanksgiving Day), D.W. Sound Service will be closed for one full week. We will re-open on Thurs, Nov 29. We will be closed Thurs-Friday, Nov 22-23, to celebrate the Thanksgiving Holiday. We will be closed Mon-Wed, Nov 26-28 because I will be in New Mexico. I will be working with our fine friends at Lectrosonics, getting updated training on some of the new equipment as the SRb, HH, and WM. I look forward to using this updated knowledge to supply our customers with even better service.

I get asked this a lot. I did create a page on our website explaining this, but I figured I'd also create one of those flow charts that seem popular these days to help explain things further. You can see it here: http://ktekbooms.com/pinnipedi/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/Boom_Pole_Flow_Chart.pdf
