UPDATE: Ecto Plates now in stock and available for immediate purchase!!! Thanks to all for their wonderful support! https://www.backpackrig.com/ectoplate/ Hello Lovely JWsound community! My name is Jordan Levie and, in addition to being a local NYC camera assistant, I am the owner and operator of backpackrig.com a small upstart camera support accessories company. We started with a backpack rig for handheld shooting, but just this week we've released a new accessory mounting product that I think will be very appealing to the cinema sound department. It's called ECTO PLATE: a simple, super lightweight plate with retrac…

Over the past couple of weeks, some of you may have seen the FB Live seminars I gave on wireless mic best practices and our WD Software. Those lives sessions had some issues, including audio dropouts, drop-down screens not showing, etc. We've edited all four videos to fix everything, and they are now available here in this playlist - I hope you find them helpful!

Hello again, ladies and gentlemen! I just wanted to announce here first that we just released our latest app, TV Timecard. To keep it simple, this app is designed to give you the fastest, most reliable and least cumbersome interface to keep track of your hours while on set. It's specifically meant to NOT keep up with your rates and perform other calculations that you either don't need or don't want to do. So if you're looking for something that does everything the accounting department would do, look elsewhere. Some people do want that, but I didn't. I built this out of frustration in dealing with existing timecard apps, "Notes" and other methods of keeping track of my ho…

Syncing Mad Max - Fury Road I had the pleasure to do an interview with Ben Osmo, Production Sound Mixer and Oliver Machin, Sound Department Coordinator & Vehicle FX Recordist about their work on Mad Max - Fury Road in the desert of Nambia, Africa. Three units with up to 12 cameras worked simultaniously, sometimes up to 7km (4.35 mi.) away from each other while driving with 60-90 km/h (37- 56 mph). The air filled with desert sand containing metallic parts that drastically decreased wireless range, while the VFX dpt wanted the camera to use the UTC time information from the GPS satellites to be used as the reference for timecode, which enabled cross referencing betw…

32’ Hydrascope with the Amphibian Remote Head, filming recently on location Black Park – ‘Little Chaos’ The most important thing to know about this was it was WET very, very WET. As you can see in this video we had rain machines lashing water over the equipment. In this particular scene we had the Amphibian Remote head and the 32’ Hydrascope. The camera itself, was in under-water housing, so they were able to completely submerge the camera if they wanted too. In this long scene, it was getting heavily splashed on the surface. With the Chapman equipment being waterproof this became a relatively straight forward scene to film. During shooting, they had to keep a…

The Cinema Audio Society (CAS) will host its 46th Annual CAS Awards on Saturday February 27th, 2010 at the Millennium-Biltmore Hotel in Los Angeles . The CAS is the largest organization of Sound Mixers in the film and television industry, combining talent from both IATSE Locals 695 and 700. This awards ceremony is particularly meaningful to sound mixers because it is given strictly by, and for, their own peers. I would like to congratulate all the nominiees for this year awards and escpecially would like to congratulate Randy Thom for the CAS Career Achievement Award and Henry Selick for the CAS Filmmaker Award. I have known Randy Thom for over 30 years and w…

We have just posted 2.0 for the 664. This update offers access to analog inputs 7-12 and 16-track recording without requiring the CL-6. We have been hard at work getting this functionality in absence of the CL-6. For users that need direct fader access to inputs 7-12, the CL-6 is still an important piece of kit. Menu control of inputs 7-12 doesn't work for everyone, especially in a bag with sources requiring level adjustments. http://www.sounddevices.com/download/664-firmware/
