Hello everyone, I am planning on releasing Boom Recorder version 6 this weekend, after doing some test to see if everything works as expected and seem to be stable using my system. The new version will include a couple of new time sources, including time-of-day, which a lot of people seem to be waiting for (weird how such a request come from multiple customers at the same time). An other feature was created by cleaning up some of the ring buffer code, Boom Recorder will now keep the pre record buffer, even during playback. This cleanup also solves some issues with the recording indicator, which sometimes was flickering off and on during recording, which does not instil…

I reviewed the Zaxcom Nomad for the next issue of Sound and Picture magazine. The magazine is printed and will arrive in the mailboxes of subscribers in just a few days, and the article will soon be available in the online version of Sound and Picture magazine. The staff of S&P was nice enough to let me post it on the Trew Audio website, and it is available now at this link: http://www.trewaudio.com/audioflow/2012/01/12/zaxcom’s-nomad-the-next-step-in-field-recording/ Glen Trew

My first overseas shipment was FedEx AWB 8406 5847 1023 on 28th July 2003 to Mr Dave Diamond (DD) in Los Angeles USA. It was a big call for Mr Diamond to buy a sound cart (SU) from someone a world away, sight unseen and money up front. I have named my new cart after Dave Diamond. The DD cart

Hello everyone, I have released the latest Boom Recorder, version 8. This is the first time I will charge for an update to Boom Recorder and I will try to get it on Apple's App Store. It is not yet in the app store, but if you like you can now buy Boom Recorder 8 from my own website: http://www.vosgames.nl/ One last thing, version 8 will only work on OS X Lion. As I mentioned before the biggest changes are in the meter bridge, with vertical meters and maximum peak meter. Below follows a complete list of changes: - Adding AppleScript state property, which may be polled to show the current Boom Recorder state. - Boom Recorder is now build with xc…

This week Zaxcom will deliver to its dealers in the US the ERX1 and the ERX1TCD. This is a new classification of product that replaces the traditional monitor receiver used on set and the time code sync boxes used to provide time code to slates and cameras. The ERX1 is a monitor receiver with time code display. The ERX1 offers audio quality unmatched by any FM monitor system. The all digital transmission system offers excellent range and fidelity. No noise or distortion can be introduced in the transmission making critical monitoring possible via wireless reception. Script supervisors can use the ERX1 to monitor audio, time code and meta data. A time code display hold…

Since the early 60’s, the lavalier microphone has been used to capture audio. Its concept allowed the audio engineer to get the cleanest voice recording by getting the mic closer to the source. Some problems we get from doing this include clothing shuffle, muffled sound, microphones falling off, hand smacks, and many other issues. (Pictured) Common placement of lav mic. Fabric sitting on top will need to be stabilized as well. The first challenge in using a lav mic is getting your talent wired up. Since concealment is key in wiring up a lav mic, it’s important you know what your talent is comfortable letting you do. I usually explain in a very diplomati…

The most common phone call/email support question I get at K-Tek is "how to untangle the coiled cable inside my boom pole". Well, I've decided to make some videos on this. The first one highlights dealing with our Avalon series of poles that have a CC bottom. I'll do another one dealing with our Klassic poles soon. Here is the first video.

K-Tek is now shipping three new windscreens. First, we have the KTMM. Codename: “mini-mini”. We originally showed these at NAB, and we have been selling lots of them and been getting positive response, so I wanted to make sure you are all aware of them. These are small lavaliere fleece winsdscreens which are the ideal complement for microphones such as the Sanken COS-11, Countryman B3 and B6. The second is the KTFUZ. Codename: “the fuzzball” because that’s exactly what it looks like. The Fuzzball is a small fuzzy windscreen for lavaliere microphones. It features a small elastic loop which helps secure the fuzzball to the microphone. It is available in black or grey.…

The time has finally come! After extensive design revisions based on user feedback and beta testing, we have started shipping the KSRA2 Stingray bag for the Sound Devices 664. They are on their way to our dealers right now and should be showing up on their doorsteps soon. We are also shipping out the back orders of the KSRA1 Stingray for the Sound Devices 633 and Zaxcom Maxx, the bag that started the new trend in audio bags. We are very excited to be getting these out and thank all of our customers for their support. If you haven't contacted your dealer to get yours reserved, you better do it now, as these are going fast.

Chinhda is developing a custom sub-frame for a client. The concept is a self-contained module with all the essential components in one box that could be affixed to a cart or used independently. Monitors will be mounted in the doors seen in the photos here. We want a latch that would hold the doors securely closed but, because of the need to fit the whole business within a standard Pelican case, there is very little extra room to fit additional hardware. Using a magnet to hold the doors closed is an obvious solution. But, we've hesitated because the magnets would be so close - an inch or less - to the monitors. These are LCD monitors so my research and my experience tell…

Hello again, ladies and gentlemen! I just wanted to announce here first that we just released our latest app, TV Timecard. To keep it simple, this app is designed to give you the fastest, most reliable and least cumbersome interface to keep track of your hours while on set. It's specifically meant to NOT keep up with your rates and perform other calculations that you either don't need or don't want to do. So if you're looking for something that does everything the accounting department would do, look elsewhere. Some people do want that, but I didn't. I built this out of frustration in dealing with existing timecard apps, "Notes" and other methods of keeping track of my ho…

Mixing on Nomad 1 2

Mixing on Nomad While I am not a sound mixer I can add some technical perspective on what it is like to mix on a Nomad and the effects it has on the production process. The benefits can only be experienced by having one over the shoulder. From the power up of the unit the Nomad is ready to go in 6 seconds. The power can either be switched on with the Nomad power switch or it may be switched with an external power system like a BDS box or similar device. External power may be removed at any time without fear of file corruption even without internal backup batteries. If internal batteries are present they function as a UPS. Battery life is 3 hours on AA…

Starting July 1st Lectrosonics products (when the ship) will now have an exciting new product design. Back Lit LCD's will be available on SM, HM, and WM (when they ship) transmitters. This is a feature that has been requested for some time. Some new units have been shipping with the feature. I can think of one pleasantly surprised customer who discovered this last week. HOWEVER, "Due to the difference in part costs between the old and new displays, along with the cost of re- designing the circuits and housings for these transmitters; there is a cost increase, effective July 1, 2012, for these products: each will increase $75 unilateral, and $100 …

On behalf of Sound Guys Solutions, I want to thank everyone that has been giving their opinions on our products as well as suggestions. As we have said before, we do not take any suggestions lightly! Lav-Bullet Updates Last year, we discovered that some people were having issues with the TA Style adapters that connected to the Lav-Bullet. If dropped, it had the potential of breaking across the threads, as well as denting the outer shell. We developed a workaround, and are now including an aluminum insert with every LB-LECTRO adapter that will greatly increase the strength of the adapter. But we didn’t stop there. We have since gone back to the dra…

Hello everyone, I have been working a little bit on the new version of Boom Recorder. Someone who uses MADI had asked me for complete input and output routing and mixing. In this new version it is possible to assign one or more inputs for each channel, and attenuating each assignment separately. Setting the attenuation level is currently only possible using AppleScript. Currently attenuation can changed with increments of 1 dB, between 0 and 254 dB. Is this accurate enough for mixing? Cheers, Take
