curious if anyone is using this and/or know if its compatible with boomrecorder or metacorder. http://www.mackie.com/products/1200f/index.html i thought the different routing options were neat. it seams that, if for some reason their is a computer issue, the routings will still work as well as the main outs. backup recorder and all the vairous feeds/ sends "should" work. thoughts?

When using 2 MOTU boxes, is there any advantage to doing firewire device aggregation as opposed to using one box to make an 8 ch ADAT feed to the other (so 16 chan came from one box)? It seems like in the latter case you'd have one less device on the FW bus, which would be a good idea, right? Philip Perkins

Anyone had a MOTU interface box fixed? A friend has a Traveler w/ dead phantom power on one input. What sort of turnaround does MOTU have with this stuff? I've never seen a service manual for this gear so I wonder if an indie tech would be able to do anything w/ it. Philip Perkins

I've always used firewire drives for this purpose. I ended up with some Firelite USB 2 drives, and so far they seem to be fine. On paper they can actually be slightly faster than the FW version of the same thing. Is using these for small jobs (6-8 tracks) a bad idea? Computer is a 1.5g G4 Powerbook, w/ USB 2. Philip Perkins

Hey All, I'm busy editing a piece I recorded with BR. During recording, BR started a new file when the current one hit 2 gigs. When I put the two files together, there are a couple words missing. Not good- it's right in the middle of an important thought. In the past when the new file has started, it picks up right where the other one leaves off- with no break. Any thoughts why this might happen? Is this to be expected? The setup, if it matters, is: Direct outs from 442 into inputs 3-6 on a MOTU ultralite. Mix out of main o/p from 442 into input 2 of motu. cues on input 1. all into powerbook g4 running BR. 1.5 gigs ram. Recording to external firewire drive…

So I've decided to switch to Boom Recorder and trade in my DV824. There are a number of factors which made me want to do this, but now I'm looking for the best interface. I like the Apogee Ensemble, for the pure reason of Apogee's great AD/DA quality and their built in "soft limiters" which are supposed to be quite good. Mackie is coming out with the Onyx 1200F, but it has been delayed so long it makes me wonder. That unit has LOTS of analog inputs, which would be good for those obnoxious times that you have every mic out of the box and need to lay down playback and such. It also has gain control for all the inputs, which seems handy. Any thoughts? Robert S…

I just got a report of a bad file that I turned in. I checked it on my hard drive, and it's very distorted, and completely unusable. The sound coming out of the main outs from my 01v96 was fine, and went to camera fine, but it ended up bad in boom recorder. I have not been using the monitor function, as it has never messed up on me before. I thought that it might be a bit depth thing, but nothing has changed there either, it's still 24b/48k in the computer. The levels are all fine, and this is a gig I've been doing for a while now with no complaints, so I know I'm setting everything up right. Maybe something got switched in the 01v? Has anyone had something like this happ…

I'm still using a G4 1.5gb Powerbook as my MC/BR computer, but would like to move up to a newer Mac for this and other location audio tasks. What does having a MacBook Pro buy me re: Metacorder (and BR and Audacity etc) vs. a regular MacBook? Where does the Mini fit into this scheme? When I started w/ MC everyone seemed to be using laptops, is that still true or has the Mini become more of a fave for cart-based recording? Also--what's the upgrade I'd need to be able to go from my old G4 version of MC to the MacIntel version? I'm still using v. 1.2 something from last year--seems fine and stable on the G4, but I understand there was a rewrite for MacIntel? If I upg…

Hi I am trying to put together a simple set-up with a boom into the sound devices 302 that goes into the mbox to record in boom recorder. Simple yes indeed but my am trying to adjust the 1k at 0Vu on the sound device with the boom recorder at -12 or -18 ddb but I can't because the mbox input levels are at the minumum and it peaks in boom recorder at 0dbfs. The only way I can reduce the level is to press the pad button at the back of the mbox but it's at -22.5dbsf so it is not accurate enough. I think I can attenuate the XLR output level on the 302. I'll try that for now and see...

Hi all, Just came off a project where I was recording up to 8 tracks on Boom Recorder and ran into a situation that I was sure about the best way to handle it. Some setups I had all 8 mics running, other times I only had 3-4 mics running. In these situations, do you reduce the number of tracks in Boom Recorder, or do you just continue to record 8 tracks, with most being blank? I opted for the blank tracks, because all they do is take up room on the DVD, and don't seem to hurt anything. To ensure post knew they were supposed to be blank, I labeled them all as "null", but wasn't sure if this was really the best way to go. How do all you multi-trackers out there ha…

When I try to install the software for my new MOTU traveler I get a Error that states: Error creating file 1008:5,-35 Drive Not Found Has anyone seen this before? I put a ticket in to MOTU but they said a response would come in 1 to 2 buisness days.

Hi folks, I'm seriously thinking of making the move to computer based recording. I've been reading Jeff's site, ramps, and the manufacturer's pages to try to figure it all out. But I still have many questions before I take the plunge. (I still have my Deva II for TC generation and over the shoulder stuff.) I'm looking at a firewire interfaces and see, for example, the focusrite and the traveller have available sample rates of 44.1, 48, 88.2, and 96. So what's gonna happen when post wants 48.048 etc? Is there a setting that I'm not seeing in the on-line literature? Jeff Babb

Typically I run a mono mix, six pre-fade outputs, and TC into the 8 analog inputs on the back of the Fireface 800. In Boom Recorder, I display 9 tracks and assign time code to track 9, just in case I want to throw a 7th mic in there for some CRAZY reason. All is good. But yesterday I decide to send (L)® into two inputs and the six pre-fade into the others. A show I covered for last week wanted a stereo mix + iso tracks. I never used more than 2 mics, so was not much of an issue that day. Yesterday I thought I'd set up my cart that way as a test while I was waiting for an actor to come to our unit. I ran (L)® out of the board into 1 & 2, and the pre-fades into 3…

Sound Studio, one of the programs quite a few of us use for simple 2-track playback, has just been updated to version 3.5.3 The update to Sound Studio incorporates a customizable toolbar with new buttons like rewind and fast-forward, a new Leopard-style gradient edged document window layout, new Automator actions, faster window redrawing and more. http://216.220.102.3/apps/app/?id=5012 Regards, Jeff Wexler

I am doing some test with Boom recorder (BR) for a shoot and I have experienced some minor issues. My set-up is MacBook Pro with Mbox-Mini recording onto the internal drive also mirrored on an external firewire 800 drive as a back-up. It happens often that BR is telling methat the recording aborted when I am pressing the record button. It says: "could not open file 0 with file name ..., file exists" I have tried different thing and nothing seems to fix that issue, after one or two record files the same message reappears again. How to set-up a simple one wireless and one boom recorded into internal and external mirrored firewire hard disk?

I'm currently investigating both of these interfaces for use with Metacorder. Although there are definite advantages to the RME unit that show up on it's spec sheet, it's more than twice the price of the MOTU. I'm wondering if anybody has any experiences with either of these two devices which might help me make a choice? My questions would be: Does the MOTU have any real advantages over the RME, like having a User Interface on the actual unit? Does the RME have substantially better sound due to improved mic pres and other design elements lacking in the MOTU? I'm using this with a MacBook running Metacorder, with a Cooper mixer and a SD 702T for backup and time co…

Does anyone know what it takes to remote roll a SD 702T (or 744T for that matter) and Metacorder (on a MacMini) from a CS208D? I'm aware of the CL-1 and the Tranzport, but aren't these both interfaced directly with their respective recording platforms? I'm looking for a solution that will enable me to use the remote roll switches on the Cooper.

I went with the MOTU finally after some soul-searching. It really did get great reviews from nearly everyone; the Presonus did not, especially in regards to the mic preamp sound. Now, I am looking for recommendations for a bag that will hold the Traveler, perhaps an additional 1U XLR patch-panel (so I don't have to dig around in the back of the rack to make frequently used connections) and a nice space to carry/use the laptop. I have looked at the Gator bag and it will probably do fine, but I am not thrillled for some reason. The Digi Designs bag looks nice on the outside but no one carries a photo of the inside; trying to find one locally so I can peek. I am loo…

I don't know if my original post on this topic went thru or not. Apologies for the repeat if it did. This is the setup for a highly unstructured multicam video shoot at a new age groove-and-drum-fest for a new PBS doc. 20+ drummers (lost count) spelled by ukelele and guitar songs. A drum-wearing music director w/ a wireless lav. Tiny space, lots of audience participation, singing, clapping and astonishingly loud drumming. Philip Perkins

I just did some multitrack recording for a 3 camera doco shoot of the premier of a major new work by the Kronos Quartet at the Kasser Theatre at Montclair State Univ. in Montclair NJ. Due to the usual tedious exigencies of time and budget, I had to go directly from the airport (Newark) to the theatre, set up and start rolling, and then keep rolling for the next two and a half days as the performance came together in final run-throughs, a dress rehearsal, more run-throughs and the premier itself. Since it was the process of putting the piece together that interested the filmmakers (more even than the premier ) we needed to be rolling most of the time. To cover the large…

Hello everyone, As I guess now everyone knows, I am working on my digital camera, it needs around 60 MB/sec write speed to disk. I can not use firewire 800, as all the bandwidth will be in use by the camera head. The alternative may interest you as well. The MacBook Pro has one of these new ExpressCard/34 slots, you can use this with a eSATA card. I use the following card: http://www.addonics.com/products/host_controller/adexc34-2e.asp (ADEXC34-2E) The JBOD/RAID card will absolutely not work on Mac OSX, so get the cheap normal one. The cheap normal one is not officially or on-officially supported by this manufacturer, but it is supported by the manufacturer…

This is primarily addressed to Darren and others who may be using Metacorder and/or BoomRecorder on a daily basis. I have had lots of questions from quite a few people about both Metacorder and BoomRecorder, I guess with the assumption that I really know a lot about these things... maybe it is because I often seem like a "know it all" (but it isn't so... I know a lot but not all). I think it could be helpful if those who have had the experience could post the best setups they have arrived at, hardware interfaces, clocking issues and so forth, so that we could all benefit from those experiences. This is not vital but if anyone is so inclined I think it could be very us…
