Hi, How many of us here actually use a HUI (Mackie/Euphonix/Tascam) together with the MBP and Metacorder with several interfaces available in the market? My Plan :- 1) MBP with SSD in the express card slot as the recording media of choice. Dailies on DVD-R 2) Metacorder with MHlab 2882+ and a Mackie HUI mod for 12V. 3) 702T as Backup and TC, Car scene, long walk and talk...........etc etc 4) Com line will be giving up 1 analog input on the MHlab 2882 and do some aux routing with the MIO software. Will like to hear some feed back on my setup, and also some idea on using a HUI on set. Alan Chong

I just discovered this fabulous iPad app, V-Control Pro from Neyrinck and it's only $50. Apologies if this has already been covered here. I can open any Pro Tools Session and control it from my iPad, adjust individual channels, groups and more. I'm really loving it. http://youtu.be/978LhiLqqQI

Hi folks, I'm seriously thinking of making the move to computer based recording. I've been reading Jeff's site, ramps, and the manufacturer's pages to try to figure it all out. But I still have many questions before I take the plunge. (I still have my Deva II for TC generation and over the shoulder stuff.) I'm looking at a firewire interfaces and see, for example, the focusrite and the traveller have available sample rates of 44.1, 48, 88.2, and 96. So what's gonna happen when post wants 48.048 etc? Is there a setting that I'm not seeing in the on-line literature? Jeff Babb

I saw this in another post and rather than hijacking that one I thought it might be better to start a new topic. Apologies if you feel I was wrong in that assumption. Anyway, I've wanted to use my 702T in the same way. It only has 2 channels so SPDIF should work right? What cable/adaptors do I need to make this work? I have a Hosa Digital-Transfer Coax cable which has the RCA-style ends. (male on both ends). Do I just need a BNC to female RCA? I want this to go into the SPIDF input on my 002. Last question: am I limited to 48k/24bit/stereo? Or can I do 96k/24bit/mono? Thanks!

Hi all! We´ve just updated our Pro Tools HD 3 PCIe to HD Native 9 and we´ve found that Apogee didn´t update its firmware to work with new Avid protocol. Yeap: looks horrible for us. We really have big investment in Apogee converters and what is more important; we are really use to these interfaces. PT 9 recognizes them but these doesn´t receive neither transmit any audio. We connect them through X-HD cards...

I'm currently investigating both of these interfaces for use with Metacorder. Although there are definite advantages to the RME unit that show up on it's spec sheet, it's more than twice the price of the MOTU. I'm wondering if anybody has any experiences with either of these two devices which might help me make a choice? My questions would be: Does the MOTU have any real advantages over the RME, like having a User Interface on the actual unit? Does the RME have substantially better sound due to improved mic pres and other design elements lacking in the MOTU? I'm using this with a MacBook running Metacorder, with a Cooper mixer and a SD 702T for backup and time co…

I'm having some troubles getting TC from a 744t to a Motu 828Mk3 - specifically to do with 23.976 TC rate. The Motu SPMTE Setup app seems to read incoming TC at every other frame rate but 23.976...once I switch the 744t and the 828 to 23.976, the clock stops moving. It does generally switch over to different TCs when I switch it on the 744t (I get a pop-up window letting me know it's getting a different TC rate) - sometimes it detects the new incoming rate properly, and sometimes it doesn't. And sometimes it even notices when I've switched the 744t to 23.976 - and then it does the same thing - stops counting. This happens not only when I use an analog input on the…

A new way to mix: This is a bit long but worthwhile read to discuss. Here’s the scenario. I walked into Gotham Sound and talked to Peter Schneider. My needs for an upcoming show were to be able to record dialogue and be able to do up to 16 tracks for music on a lower budget. I was not able to afford high end ie $$$ like the Deva, Sonosax, Cooper etc, and I was rather leery about going the Mackie route. Peter sums the system up in an email he had sent( he gave me permission to post it) I think that the control surface is the future for location "cart" mixing. The use of Lemur on location was the first attempt at that, and resulted in http://www.lectrosonic…

Can anyone give me some information as to what this sort of interference might be? (Attached are two screenshots from a brief iZotope RX-5 sample of a session I recorded last night. One shows the interference as a somewhat continuous (there is some amplitude modulation) frequency at 1kHz, with overtones at 2, 3, and 4 kHz. There are additional harmonics that get quieter as the frequency goes up and so are difficult to see on this example. The second screenshot is the same sample, using a feature of RX-5 that allows one to select the fundamental frequency, and then select for the overtones too. Here , it is easy to see additional harmonics at 5, …

This is primarily addressed to Darren and others who may be using Metacorder and/or BoomRecorder on a daily basis. I have had lots of questions from quite a few people about both Metacorder and BoomRecorder, I guess with the assumption that I really know a lot about these things... maybe it is because I often seem like a "know it all" (but it isn't so... I know a lot but not all). I think it could be helpful if those who have had the experience could post the best setups they have arrived at, hardware interfaces, clocking issues and so forth, so that we could all benefit from those experiences. This is not vital but if anyone is so inclined I think it could be very us…

Hi All, I'm looking to see if anyone is using Boom Recorder after installing OSX Yosemite. Or for that matter, Wave Agent, Pixnet/Pix 260, Dante Virtual SoundCard, Audacity etc. Any issues encountered by anyone so far? Just checking into it before I do the leap. Thanks, Scott Harber

I'm looking to purchase an audio interface to use with my MacBook Pro (2009 model) under $500 as I have a very limited budget. Right now I'm looking at a Presonus FireStudio Project. It has the inputs I need as well as the outputs I need. Any recommendations or tips? I've been running a HD-P2 (as this is what is available to me) and I really need more channels as well as more monitoring. I've got a project coming up that I'd like to run with 1 boom, and 3 lavs. Also, I will most likely run Nuendo or possibly BoomRecorder. I would really appreciate any feedback I can get. I've noticed that the Motu Traveler seems to be used a lot but that would require me to go from …

Hi sound people, I have uploaded pictures and information about my current mix cart that I used for the just finished Woody Allen film . Unfortunately the upload did not show up in the gallery section as intended due to an issue with the jwsound site software. You can see the pictures and info here: Email me with comments! i used to do a lot of MIDI music with my PC and Yamaha keyboards, but that was a while back. I am looking into getting back into using computers. Boom Recorder for my Mac. My questions is, how in the heck do I get multi-track inputs into my Macbook Pro? I have seen USB audio interfaces/mixers, so I am thinking this is the way. I have a Sounddevices Mix Pre-D, but it only mixes two channels, plus two more via tape return, so that's a start, but still it would be nice to get multi-track into the laptop. Also, does the USB audio interface somehow separate channels 3 and 4 into separate tracks? Forgive me for being a total noob.

I'm working on a project that might involve working with a borrowed Yamaha DM2000 mixer. Sorry for my ignorance here, but how does 24 tracks get though the mixer, and into a software app (metacorder or boom) on a Mac Laptop? The Yamaha has no FW (a talk with the Yamaha guys at NAB confirms this), so I'm assuming there's something I'm missing? ADAT? Thanks -Richard

Hi All, First time poster here with a quick question about recording sound, double system, for extremely long takes (hour to an hour 1/2). Here's the workflow I'm going with (I think) Recording mix and iso's in Logic on Macbook Pro through a Motu Traveller Recording safety mix to 702T 702T TC to Motu Traveller (29.97ND Free Run) Sync two trilevel sync boxes to my 702T Sync boxes go on 2 Sony EX3's (23.976/not sure of mode setting yet) I'm worried about drift since these are such long recording takes. My question is would it be better to send a wireless TC signal from the camera to my Motu or 702T and use that as the master sync? Since it's a multi-came…

I'm still using a G4 1.5gb Powerbook as my MC/BR computer, but would like to move up to a newer Mac for this and other location audio tasks. What does having a MacBook Pro buy me re: Metacorder (and BR and Audacity etc) vs. a regular MacBook? Where does the Mini fit into this scheme? When I started w/ MC everyone seemed to be using laptops, is that still true or has the Mini become more of a fave for cart-based recording? Also--what's the upgrade I'd need to be able to go from my old G4 version of MC to the MacIntel version? I'm still using v. 1.2 something from last year--seems fine and stable on the G4, but I understand there was a rewrite for MacIntel? If I upg…

Not exactly "Recording Direct to Computer" but sort of. I have had no experience with this but looks interesting. "Pro Audio To Go turns your iPhone into a 48 kHz professional audio recorder for use on location by news reporters, journalists, documentarians, musicians, DSLR videographers, filmmakers, producers and editors. With a single tap on your phone, you can record an AIFF audio file in 48 kHz. Upload the file directly to an FTP server or email it, then download and instantly begin using it in your editing system's Timeline. No conversion necessary!" Pro Audio To Go

I've been reading thru old posts seeing if I can find some answers about using the Motu Traveler for a computer based rig - and after maybe an hour, my eyes have glazed over and my head is hurting, so I thought I'd just throw a couple of small questions out there. My understanding with the Traveler is that the first 4 inputs are mic level only and the last 4 inputs are line level only. I would probably not be interested in using the mic pres generally (rather line level from a SD mm-1 or mix pre) for booms. When it comes to signals from wireless receivers - would it be advisable to use the line inputs only? With the pad on the 4 mic inputs, could you bring the outpu…

I've always used firewire drives for this purpose. I ended up with some Firelite USB 2 drives, and so far they seem to be fine. On paper they can actually be slightly faster than the FW version of the same thing. Is using these for small jobs (6-8 tracks) a bad idea? Computer is a 1.5g G4 Powerbook, w/ USB 2. Philip Perkins

Installed a copy of Boom Recorder on my MacBook Pro. I couldn't get it to launch, without getting the "spinning beachball" 5 seconds after I launch it. As it turns out, Boom Recorder will lunch with the Mixer (Onix 1620) only if the mixer is plugged into a 110 power. BR doesn't work if the mixer is being powered via the 12vdc option that I have. Anyone else have this issue? It's gotta be a weird issue where the FireWire card simply just doesn't work nice with the 12vdc? weird.. -Richard

I have been playing around with boom recorder while we are on hiatus; thinking that I might use it to replace my 744T as the backup recorder. I'd use a Mac Mini and a Traveler as hardware. Boom Recorder works well, but the klugey hardware and delivery system has me a bit put off. I am not used to burning a disc at the end of the day, and I would need to figure out a work-around for that. Our days are long enough without needing to be longer. And strangely enough, the other issue that might put it out of contention is the fact that I haven't been able to puzzle out a way to roll Boom Recorder and my DV824 with one switch. Okay, I am spoiled by my Rollogic and the w…

I recently purchased the Mackie 1620i. I plug it into my Mac Mini and when I plug in a mic I can hear a doubling effect on any input I use. How do I stop this. I had not have this happen using my alesis mixer. It's like my audio is looping through the mixer. Also I I push the solo buttons the effect is no longer heard. What do I need to do to correct this issue?

Following up my two-channel question with an eight channel version: I am looking to expand my track count and was wondering what some of you guys are using. I am looking for a single rack space unit what takes eight 1/4" line ins (d-subs welcome), and can output to adat optical without any use of a computer to control it. Essentially, I have a bunch of very high end mic pres, and would like to rack them up with a converter (preferably mid to high end) that can output adat optical, so that I can move from studio to studio and be able to interface digitally with their system without having to deal with breakout snakes and patch bays, and since most people/studios …
