Are there any sound recordists here relying specifically on recording to computer only without running an external backup recorder?

Anyone had any experience using the Sony DMW-C3 control surface? http://pro.sony-asia.com/product/dmw-c3 It's pretty compact, DC powered (15V), has long throw faders and they occasionally come up on ebay for not very much However, it's made for their XPRI editing system and I'm not sure how it talks to the XPRI software (RS422? proprietary protocol?) I'm wondering whether it could work with GlovePIE or similar

The Sound Devices 788t has eight of arguably the best preamps and ADCs in a portable piece of sound equipment. It also has firewire ports. On top of that it is the industry standard for location based mutitrack recorder: most sound mixers either have one or are at least familiar with their use. Wouldn't it be AMAZING if this piece of equipment could be used as a computer audio interface? All the pieces are there. Its seem like it is only the software that is holding this machine back from becoming a whole new beast. I already use mine for its preamps in my project studio and then run it through a ADC/interface into Pro Tools. This would cut out a whole section of the sign…

Hi All, Wondering if anyone has done a music tracking session into a DAW using a Sound Devices MixPre 6/3? Thinking of retiring an Apogee Duet Firewire and wonder how the MixPres sound for music tracking. It's ability to do double duty is very attractive if the studio sound is in the Duet league or better. I've seen a video or two demo-ing recording music live-off-the-floor direct into the MixPre - more curious as to how it sounds as DAW interface as compared to others in it's price-point. Would love to hear a full layered session (clean instruments - not distorted guitar) with a wide variety of acoustic and virtual instruments and especially male and female l…

Sound devices,

So I was doing a corporate gig and it was an interview with a woman, simple setup boom and lav.
We shot around 8 hours and we did 10 scenes, the 744 was recording as usual until scene 5, what I mean is that the files on the hdd where perfect and from scene 5 on, all the files are between 3mb and. 20 mb. While the first takes where around 150mb.
The recorder indicated I was recording on the hdd but it was slow on the CF, I couldn't stop the take, so we kept rolling with the 744 indicating recording on the hdd
My surprise came when I handed the files, the editor called me in stati…

Sound Studio, one of the programs quite a few of us use for simple 2-track playback, has just been updated to version 3.5.3 The update to Sound Studio incorporates a customizable toolbar with new buttons like rewind and fast-forward, a new Leopard-style gradient edged document window layout, new Automator actions, faster window redrawing and more. http://216.220.102.3/apps/app/?id=5012 Regards, Jeff Wexler

SoundStudio software has been returned to the developer, Felt Tip Software, after it was being distributed for a few years by FreeVerse (a game developer). There is a new version out available from the MacApp Store for $29.00. There is no upgrade policy from v. 3.x to the new version 4.x but the price of $29.00 is essentially what SoundStudio upgrades were in the past. Also, once purchased through the MacApp Store, future updates will be free. I know a lot of people say just use Audacity, it's free, cross platform, etc., but I have never preferred Audacity over SoundStudio. I highly recommend SoundStudio for anytime simple 2-track program is needed. Notes from F…

It is obvious now that personal computers can be used as the main recording device, even in the professional setting of location field recording for picture. This is the place where we can discuss all the ramifications, exchange ideas and real world experiences, and share speculation about what the future will bring to our workplace. Regards, Jeff Wexler

I haven't used my BR much, but have a job coming up that it would be perfect for so I've been fooling around with in the last few days. One thing I haven't been able to figure out is how to send the recording to multiple drives while rolling. I know I could ask Take about this (Senator), but I wanted to hear from you guys driving BR all the time on real jobs about how you deal with this. Also--do you use BR's level trim feature much? I had a great Hoodman "Eclipse" sun hood for my old Powerbook, but it is too small to fit the MacBook I use now. Hoodman doesn't seem to be stocking their Mac hoods anymore, and told me they might not be making them for computers in the future. (All the ones on their site--out of stock--were for G4 laptops.) I found this hood from Europe: http://www.theithelper.com/laptopshade.htm, anyone know it? Another suggestion? The MacBook screen is really not as bright as my Powerbook's screen was, so I do need help with it outside. Philip Perkins

Hi All, First time poster here with a quick question about recording sound, double system, for extremely long takes (hour to an hour 1/2). Here's the workflow I'm going with (I think) Recording mix and iso's in Logic on Macbook Pro through a Motu Traveller Recording safety mix to 702T 702T TC to Motu Traveller (29.97ND Free Run) Sync two trilevel sync boxes to my 702T Sync boxes go on 2 Sony EX3's (23.976/not sure of mode setting yet) I'm worried about drift since these are such long recording takes. My question is would it be better to send a wireless TC signal from the camera to my Motu or 702T and use that as the master sync? Since it's a multi-came…

Hey all, Not sure if this is better here or in the Mac section. My question is, if I'm going with BoomRecorder and have my mixer and an external hard drive is it better to go Mac->Mixer->HD or Mac->HD->Mixer. My instinct says the HD should be as close to the Mac in the chain as possible, but just want to see if anyone has had good or bad experiences either way. Thanks, and thank you to everyone for all of the useful information and to our host who keeps things on topic and topical. Happy and safe holidays to all! Phil

I've done a great deal of audio recording on computers, on location mostly on a 12" Powerbook G4 w/ Metacorder. That won't be happening anymore because that computer was stolen off my sound cart on a job today. My other computer is a 1 year old MacBook 13" 2.16 Core Duo, and that is about to be hosed off and made into my audio computer. Any one have any caveats about using this model (or MacBooks in general) w/ Meta or Boom recorder? thanks Philip Perkins

Hey there Having a very weird issue that just came up in post on my show right now. Im running Metacorder on my macbook Pro and using OS 10.7.4. I know that Metacorder isn't necessarily supported to run in Lion but I've had no problems my past few shows with it. Im using a fire face 800 and an Apogee Big ben Word clock to clock the fire face and my DM1000. Running metacorder in monophonic mode with between 12 and 20 tracks per day (running 8-12 hours a day) to 2 G-tech Mini firewire drives (powered locally, not bus). Ingesting timecode either from a master clock from video when we shoot on our sound stage or from an Ambient Lock-It when we shoot in the field and…

I found an interesting product that could be useful for all those using Mac Mini's on the cart for Boomrecorder, Metacorder, etc. The new iMo eye9 has it ALL. A full 9" touchscreen with improved, crystal-clear 1024x600 resolution plus a 1.3 megapixel rotating detachable webcam…but there's more, much more: a built-in stylus that ingeniously doubles as an easel stand, a standard base that allows for multiple viewing angles plus landscape and portrait viewing modes, easy removal for tablet-style use, and (with the Flex-Arm Mount, purchased separately) quick, secure mounting to virtually any surface! PC and Mac compatible, works with Windows and Mac OSX. http://…

Hi there, I am looking to create a Fireface 800 rig for use with Boom Recorder that can either be used on location using a 2.66ghz, 4gb ram dual core Macbook Pro 15" (no express card) + two Focusrite Octopre's for up to 26 Analogue inputs. I would also like to be able to chain a Lacie Rugged drive via FW 800 to this setup. MBP FW800 port > Fireface 800 (2X Octopre's connected via adat) > Lacie Rugged Drive - bus powered I would also like to be able to expand this system to 52 inputs, by using two FF800's + four Octopre's connecting the FF800's via separate firewire cables to a Mac Pro (quad or 8 core, depends on my budget). Mac Pro Firewire 800 po…

Hey! new to the site with a couple interesting question (that might interest both music producers and direct sound audiovisual recorders) As my love and effort also goes to music, it'd be ideal to use this equipment in a music context too, to be able to manage this pre-amps from a computer. (1st question: Do you know any mixer/recorder that is also an audio interface? doubt that exists but you never know..) / 2nd question: Do you know any audio interface that has 8 digital inputs?) Another choice would be to do some A/D . D/A (from mic to ZAXCOM) and then again A/D (from ZAXCOM to audio interface) thinking that might mean some quality loss.. 3rd and most important quest…

I've always used firewire drives for this purpose. I ended up with some Firelite USB 2 drives, and so far they seem to be fine. On paper they can actually be slightly faster than the FW version of the same thing. Is using these for small jobs (6-8 tracks) a bad idea? Computer is a 1.5g G4 Powerbook, w/ USB 2. Philip Perkins

Hello All,I'm putting together a small rack-mount kit and need a USB audio interface for it. I bought an M-Audio M-Track 8 but there were some issues with audio bleeding between tracks, probably due to the signal being too hot coming in, so I'm looking for a replacement. The inputs will be Lectro Wireless, Computer Audio, and audio split from an HDMI input. What I need are:8x or more Pre-Amps (At least 6 of which are on the rear of the unit)USB 2.0 or 3.0 interfaceRack Mountable (preferably 1ru)Hardware Controlled (I.E. Knobs) I think I've primarily been looking at music oriented interfaces so far so I may need help finding something more capable of handling the …

I am not sure about this connector. It looks like it is not very reliable to work with live audio. My power adapter seems to cut-in-and-out with the connector on my MacBook. Does anyone have any experience, or a solution?

I'm in the market for an audio interface to record to, and play from, a current model 15" MacBook Pro (via USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt) and, in the nice but not essential category, a current model iPad (via an independent power source for the interface and the iPad camera connector kit). I already use a Sound Devices 7 series recorder. For the interface, I need only two mic inputs, and output to headphones and two speakers, so the obvious choice is a USBPre 2. However, there appear to be credible alternatives at similar or lower prices - for example, RME's Babyface, Universal Audio's new Apollo Twin (although it requires AC power, i.e. cannot be powered by the comput…

Boom Recorder saves the audio file to disk when recording. But if the computer crashes during the recording, then the header of the audio file is not complete yet and you will not be able to use the file. Use BR File Fixer to rescue these files. It looks at the size of the file on disk, then checks some information in the header that was written and then corrects the header. You can find it at: http://www.vosgames.nl/downloads/

The Motu Traveler has 8 analogue inputs and an additional 4 digital inputs SPDIF and AES. So I tried using my SD744T to provide 4 analogue to digital conversions to feed both the SPDIF and AES Motu digital inputs in an attempt to have 12 analogue inputs. To my suprise the 744T fed both the SPDIF and the AES inputs on the Motu successfully and it did not seem to matter whether the digital out setting on the 744T was set to domestic or professional, it still worked. I ran a test with claps and zoomed in to the waveforms and was also suprised to see that there did not appear to be any delay on the digital ins (provided by the 744) alongside the analogue ins of the Motu. …

I was just trying to use an apple remote to roll boom recorder. It does indeed work, but it launches iTunes every time I hit play (record). Anyone know of a way to prevent this? The boom recorder manual says just to have iTunes closed - nothing more. Thanks, -Greg-
