Anyone know what steps I need to take to get Metacorder to work with two MOTU Travelers @ once? Gallery sent me a cryptic email about needing to search the Apple docs about OSX device aggregation, which I don't know anything about, and couldn't find anything about specifically on Apple's site. Metacorder can see both Travelers (linked by FW), but seems to be asking me to choose between them (and the built in) as opposed to using them both, as in Digital Performer etc.. Philip Perkins

Hello! I was recommended here by a very helpful video guy on the filmmaking.net forums. I work with groups of teenagers in our area and every year or so we make a short film. We have tried to increase our scope each year making better, longer films. On our last project I realized that audio quality was a major problem. I know very little beyond what I've picked up or read on places like this. For our last project we ran a condenser mic on a boom pole and an old ld studio mic on a stand into a cheap Behringer mixer. From the mixer I ran the audio back into one of the two Panasonic HD Camcorders we were using. The quality was pretty bad and this time we want to do…

I was wondering if anyone here has had a chance to work with the latest MOTU 828mk3 FW interface? I need an affordable 8-channel A/D converter only (don't need mic pre-amps) and this looks pretty good. In particular I am interested in using it in location recording instead of a Traveler (slightly cheaper and I understand it is not capable of battery operation). 1. What should I use for a timecode source in long takes for video sync? 2. Thinking of purchasing Boom Recorder also, so how would I set the FW interface for a stable timebase? Mark Calice

In my increasingly desperate attempts to get yet more inputs for my under-powered Metacorder rig (G4 1.5 GHz), I hit on the idea of adding inputs via the USB2 port, since I really can't bog the FW (400) bus any more than I am already. I've done a test that looks good adding 2 tracks from a USB interface to the rig I already had (22 tracks, thus 24 tracks in record 24/48), and am reticent to go farther (until I'm even MORE desperate, that is)--the test is 90 min continuous record. Has anyone tried using combos of FW and USB2 input devices with Metacorder or Boom Recorder or anything else on a Mac laptop? Yes, I know I need a new computer. Tell my family and loan of…

Hi all, Is anyone here running Boom Recorder 8.2 or 8.3 on Mavericks? If so, how's it going? A colleague has a new rig he can't 'back-grade'.

Just caught this, which was announced in the past week or so: https://www.appleopenusa.com/Articles.asp?ID=140 This is obviously a Dell Mini netbook, modified to run Mac OSX. But I gotta wonder if it just might work with Metacorder. The thought of a 2-pound 10" laptop running a multi-track recorder is very tempting. One drawback is that the Metacorder screen is fixed up to a certain dimension, so it can't be shrunk smaller than about 12" or so. Still, this could be incredibly useful -- provided it's reliable. And let's see how long Apple waits before crushing these guys with a sledgehammer (sadly)... --Marc W.

I was, once upon a time, an enthusiastic Cool Edit Pro user. Around the time I was switching over to Mac's, Adobe acquired Cool Edit, and it continued as a Windows only editor. I switched to Pro Tools long ago, but I was excited to see the Beta release of Audition for Mac today. I haven't had much time to delve into the developments that have taken place over the past years, but I'm super excited as this was once a very featured piece of software and I suspect it is more powerful now! I don't think I'll be switching back from PT any time soon (especially with the developments in 9), but it's always good to keep an eye on the options. The beta release is availa…

I just got a report of a bad file that I turned in. I checked it on my hard drive, and it's very distorted, and completely unusable. The sound coming out of the main outs from my 01v96 was fine, and went to camera fine, but it ended up bad in boom recorder. I have not been using the monitor function, as it has never messed up on me before. I thought that it might be a bit depth thing, but nothing has changed there either, it's still 24b/48k in the computer. The levels are all fine, and this is a gig I've been doing for a while now with no complaints, so I know I'm setting everything up right. Maybe something got switched in the 01v? Has anyone had something like this happ…

Scenario 1. Recording master 2 track audio to a HD Tape Deck, Record Run TC 2. Backup 2 track to 744t 3. ISO tracks to Boom Recorder via MOTU Traveler Plan: 1. Send TC and WC from deck to 744t 2. Send TC from 744t to MOTU audio input 3. Send S/PDIF signal from 744t to S/PDIF in on MOTU (not sure I need to record that input?) Is this still considered daisy chaining word clock?

I'm wondering about using a laptop with audacity to record. Production has always used this setup and want to follow the original setup with a new sound guy. It'll come out of the 302 via the mix out as I'm already using the XLR"s to send to camera. Levels aren't the easiest to set but I think I got them. I also had to go into the Audio I/O preferences to get a 2 channel recording. On my desktop it works fine but on the laptop it seems as though only the left channel will pass audio. The bigger problem is that they want a mono mixdown on one side of the stereo track and timecode on the other. I could buy an interface to get better separation but the las…

Premiere Pro 6 + Sennheiser Shotgun + FW Motu Ultralight = Voiceover Direct to Sequence?

Hello! I have been trying to get Premiere Pro 6 to recognize a Firewire mic input without success. Someone who put up a tutorial on getting Premiere to recognize his USB mic told me that with proper drivers this shouldn't be a problem, but Adobe says these FW mics are not supported. Does anyone know of a workaround? We have the Sennheiser shotgun and don't want to downgrade quality, but simply cannot get the Sennheiser to show in Audio Hardware. Any ideas? Thanks so much! Best, Alex

Take, 1. Is it possible to use OSC commands to control transport on Boom Recorder? 2. Any plans to incorporate a small menu to control a talkback channel for outputs? I ask because i've been considering setting up a mrmr controller for boom recorder with my ipod touch. http://createdigitalmotion.com/tag/mrmr/ A

SoundStudio software has been returned to the developer, Felt Tip Software, after it was being distributed for a few years by FreeVerse (a game developer). There is a new version out available from the MacApp Store for $29.00. There is no upgrade policy from v. 3.x to the new version 4.x but the price of $29.00 is essentially what SoundStudio upgrades were in the past. Also, once purchased through the MacApp Store, future updates will be free. I know a lot of people say just use Audacity, it's free, cross platform, etc., but I have never preferred Audacity over SoundStudio. I highly recommend SoundStudio for anytime simple 2-track program is needed. Notes from F…

Does anyone know what it takes to remote roll a SD 702T (or 744T for that matter) and Metacorder (on a MacMini) from a CS208D? I'm aware of the CL-1 and the Tranzport, but aren't these both interfaced directly with their respective recording platforms? I'm looking for a solution that will enable me to use the remote roll switches on the Cooper.

Someone posted a link a while back to a really nifty utility that allows one to preview and move .wav files in a mac. I seem to remember that it also allowed one to attatch the .wav to an email as an mp3 and send it off to wherever. The company wot made it had a neat little video that showed you how to use it. BUT - I have lost the details. Can anyone remember what it was, please? Kindest regards, Simon B

Does anyone know if it would be possible to use a SD 7 series as a firewire interface for boom recorder or metacorder? I know it wouldn't be a practical use of the 7 series, just wondering if its possible. Maybe with a firmware update since it can now interface with external drives? Pass through mode or something.

Sound Studio, one of the programs quite a few of us use for simple 2-track playback, has just been updated to version 3.5.3 The update to Sound Studio incorporates a customizable toolbar with new buttons like rewind and fast-forward, a new Leopard-style gradient edged document window layout, new Automator actions, faster window redrawing and more. http://216.220.102.3/apps/app/?id=5012 Regards, Jeff Wexler

Without meaning to, I topped my Metacorder "time-in-record" record last night at an HBO multicam shoot (SF Opera House, "Youth Speaks Poetry Slam" finals). 16 tr 24/48: 2 hrs 40 min. I didn't really want files that big but at the show start/roll-everything time there was still a line of people waiting to get in that ran all the way around the block, so people kept popping on stage and almost starting the show, riffing--you know the scene. All went well except for a DJ who decided to bust his sound-check feed levels by about 30db when the show started--the PA guy and I scrambled for the first few minutes but things settled down after that. The SF Opera House has a Scho…

Hey All, I'm busy editing a piece I recorded with BR. During recording, BR started a new file when the current one hit 2 gigs. When I put the two files together, there are a couple words missing. Not good- it's right in the middle of an important thought. In the past when the new file has started, it picks up right where the other one leaves off- with no break. Any thoughts why this might happen? Is this to be expected? The setup, if it matters, is: Direct outs from 442 into inputs 3-6 on a MOTU ultralite. Mix out of main o/p from 442 into input 2 of motu. cues on input 1. all into powerbook g4 running BR. 1.5 gigs ram. Recording to external firewire drive…

Samsung Announces Mass-Production of 256 GB of Solid State Drive for Notebooks Wednesday night, electronics manufacturer Samsung announced that the company has started production of its 256GB Flash SSD. According to Electronista, the 2.5" solid-state notebook drive offers a sequential read speed of 220MB per second but faster sequential write speeds and records data at 200MB per second.
