Stage hopping...... 1 2 3 4 5

One of my favorite things about working in Hollywood is stage hopping. When I work on any of the lots, it is a blast to visit other mixers, boom ops, even video assist monkeys on the other stages. Today I had lunch with Bruce Perlman and Ron Sherouse, (sorry if I slaughtered his last name), two great guys. Last time I was here 3 weeks ago I got to see Jim Stuebe and his gang. Any time I am at Universal I swing by and see Mick when time permits. Catching up with your peers is so much fun even though it is over way too soon. No real point I'm making here other than it makes my day when I do..... Not much work and a bunch of free time today. CrewC

Free Electricity 1 2 3 4

Well, not exactly free as we all know, but how wonderful it is to see these solar panels, pulled out of their boxes and as soon as exposed to the light are producing electricity. Our solar installation is complete except for all the necessary inspections, and we threw the switch once today just to watch the SCE meter run backwards. The panels are producing more electricity than we need so we were drawing ZERO from the utility company. In case anyone might be doing any armchair calculations, not all the panels are visible in this photo --- there are panels on the other side of the garage roof (reverse angle, of course, not too pretty to look at from the alley).

Stop the Madness A couple of weeks ago I wrapped a week of reshoots on a Saturday morning. We started at 4pm Friday afternoon and went all night and shot a day scene on Saturday and finished around 8 am. This was after a week that started at 6 am Monday, you all know what I’m talking about. I loaded my gear in my truck and headed back to Santa Fe from the San Cristobal ranch. Not a long drive but there is one long open empty straightaway. In my drowsy state I noticed a car about 100 yards ahead of me suddenly go airborne. In my slow reacting mind I thought thats wierd why is that car flying. Then it flipped and came down on its roof with more force than any stunt I’ve e…

We are filming a polka dance in August, in Colorado and I need suggestions for micing the accordion player's right side - the keyboard /melody side - of the accordion. Problem I ran into the last time I did this was that the acc. player's right hand is in constant motion, squeezing and drawing the instrument, while the left side is more stable since he rests it on his left knee. So I was able to get a good track of the left/bass side using a mic on stand, but the right side was not so good. Its going to require a mic mounted to the accordion. This particular accordion does have an internal stereo mic system that I can split off of , but I had problems getting a clean …

The world's only festival of ice music, will be held in Geilo, Norway, January 16-19, 2014. At last year's festival, we followed the process as sculptors and musicians made the instruments from lake ice, recorded the otherwordly sounds they produce and captured the final haunting performances in a purpose-built auditorium made out of snow. See the video here: http://www.theguardian.com/travel/video/2013/dec/24/norways-ice-music-festival-video Website: http://www.icemusicfestival.no

I had a inquiry today about recording some sort of low budg food show. The producer mentioned that the location was an AirBnB short term rental, an apartment in the city. AirBnB locations? What could go wrong… philp

From the mic's sat outdoors uncovered just to look cool, to the bad placement of Lav's on shirt collars (look at Ricks mic hidden at the back of his beard, about 3:40 in) this shoot could have been so much better presented.

New use for 664 (for me), PA mixer @ my son's wedding. Why? Long story, mission creep and so on. Lavs, handhelds, playback, rec isos for the friends-shooting-with-DSLRs, feed the speakers. I sat the 664 bag on a crate in front of me in the front row and was Dad-of-Groom and PA-boy at the same time. What we do for our kids….3 setups (ceremony, dinner, dance), stay until it's all over to pack up the rental speakers etc. Fun times that I'm glad are over…. Here's why I did it:

Here is a fun article I think everyone here might enjoy about the origins of classic Sci/Fi movie sounds like Lightsabers and the Predator's heartbeat. The origin stories are good, and some of the old footage of waving microphones in front of speakers during the Star Wars sessions is fantastic... http://io9.com/10-weirdest-origins-of-classic-science-fiction-sound-ef-1590477009 Cheers, Evan Meszaros

After a very simple ortho surgery* with some unfortunate medical complications... followed by a stay in rehab with nothing other than an iphone for professional company... wiseguy Jay Rose is back home, and will be back in the studio soon. Sorry, world. -- *Orthopedia is why I do post now, instead of production sound. I don't envy carrying a bag (or even just a boom) all day.

Finally, a documentary about Hal Ashby, one of the most amazing people I have ever known. The years I spent working with Hal were some of the most exciting in my life, his generosity of spirit, his collaboration and respect for the people he worked with, I learned so much about the craft of movie-making, things that I put to use every day as I continue to work in my 45th year as a sound mixer. LINK to "Once I Was" fundraiser for the movie (watch the video)

I was looking to post a review or POV about films I have seen. The search of jwsound turned up zero. Didn't we have a section once? Do we want one? I'm not against hearing others views about films out there. "The Artist" Mostly devoid of sound I found it to be as entertaining a movie as I can remember. Not the most original story idea ever written, but it is a very original way to tell that story and its time in a way modern films don't and I don't mean just the lack of sound. The actors are A + even working without one of their main tools. The emotional quotient is surprisingly high for such a fun film about silent film making and the end of that era. The look of th…
