There are few modern relationships as fraught as the one between art and money. Are they mortal enemies, secret lovers or perfect soul mates? Is the bond between them a source of pride or shame, a marriage of convenience or something tawdrier? The way we habitually think and talk about these matters betrays a deep and venerable ambivalence. On one hand, art is imagined to exist in a realm of value that lies beyond and beneath mere economic considerations. The old phrase “starving artist” gestures toward an image that is both romantic and pathetic, of a person too pure, and also just too impractical, to make it in the world. When that person ceases to starve, he or she…

Dear Member, A producer of Midnight Rider (Unclaimed Freight Prod.) has called the IA to inform us that they will be resuming production of Midnight Rider in Los Angeles in June with pre-production starting in a couple weeks. We have expressed our obvious concerns regarding this production starting again. We have demanded that they provide clearances from any and all governmental agencies and/or police agencies that are investigating this company and the individuals involved. We will require that they comply with all deposit requirements of the Low Budget Agreement. The company has agreed to provide proof of all required insurance as well. In addition to a Se…

Well I've made a big change with my cart from when I first built it in 2006. It's now all in the one 19ru SKB. I've ditched my Deva 5 and have gone Dante, with the Sound Devices Pix 970 and a JoeCo BBR64-Dante as my backup recorder. I still have another fail safe, Boom Recorder on the Mac-Mini. This photo is the first power up. There is a Pix 260i as a 'placeholder' until the 970 ships at the end of April. The back of the cart and a whole bunch of interconnecting cables are all gone. Here's how it used to look. The 19ru, with a 4ru on top.

Just heard on walkie a fellow mixer took a hit to the head on a construction reality show we are both working on. I am down on another street at a different site. I hear an ambulance coming and i believe he is headed to the hospital. He may have a concussion. I am working on finding out how he is doing. Hope everyone where ever your workplace today might be is working safe Best, Ken

Some of you may find this ad humorous. I didn't have a boom op on this one but I thought it came out decent anyways. https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=Z8GLIJ_HQJ8 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

This was done for no particular reason, but I think it's funny... http://blogs.telosalliance.com/discrepancy/predictive-audio-processor or download directly from http://cdn2.hubspot.net/hub/319226/file-610345922-pdf/Discrepancy_Sheet/March_2014/PAP-Manual-1April2014.pdf?t=1395760298000 Funnier, perhaps, if you've spent time in a post studio or broadcast plant. But plenty of industry / techie gags to go around. It's based on an actual product line and manual series... http://25-seven.com/

To start off the new year I am interested in getting suggestions from our members for improvements, enhancements, features and functions for our online community. I want JWSOUND to continue to grow, not just the size of our membership but the value and functionality of the site. I'm open to any suggestions or ideas --- I am not planning on abandoning the basic forum structure we have here with Invision Power Board software, but I'm sure there are things that could be changed, added or even linked to other web installations I have been experimenting with (for example, the WIKI REFERENCE test site I set up awhile ago, unfinished work for sure and may not ever be used). …

Well, it's good to know that Aleve is thinking about the hard-working sound crew working on film sets... Big fan of the generic Naproxen, which I think is $10/bottle at Costco...

At the beginning of February, I went out to Marfa, TX with a two-piece band called The Wind and the Wave to record a series of acoustic videos to be released on their Youtube channel as they roll out the release of their new debut record on RCA Records. I recorded the song in the above video in a very small vintage trailer with only one mic: a CMIT-5u positioned on a fishpole holder above the band, slightly closer to the girl than the guy (picture provided). She was quieter than he, and his Fender resonator guitar was significantly louder than her Martin. With this positioning of the mic, I was able to bring the Martin out in front a bit more, highlighting its brightn…

After watching that hilarious iPhone vs. EVO "Xtranormal" CG cartoon this past week, I thought I'd try my hand at making one. The digital voices aren't great, and the animation ain't exactly Pixar, but it sorta/kinda works and gets the point across. Anybody who's worked in the low-budget indie film business has dealt with this kind of situation before: http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/6807847/ "It has 4K!" --Marc W.
