People my age that grew up in the good old USA have seen so much transition and change from post WWII until now that it boggles the mind. Walter Cronkike was a huge part of those time's for me. Rest in Peace Mr Cronkite. Personally I am surprised that you lasted so long seeing what the so called news has transformed into. You set a high bar that sadly looks like it will never be beat again. Class act in my book. Big fan. CrewC

Earlier this week I day played on a live set for a hotel media director I knew. The setup: 10 wireless hand helds for audience, 3 lavs for presenters. It was a bunch of researchers and doctors, who did not seem to agree with each others theories. I thought preachers talked long on Sunday, but this was a new experience. I tried to wire up as many presenters as I was allowed to (of course I had no Program or itinerary) and they tag teamed each others presentations. Horrible logistics, half the room not being able to see the projection, and horrible Air Con compression noise rumbling next to the space. The crew and I braved it through. I the end of the day aft…

I finally had a chance to catch this film in 3D today. We had the best seats in the house, and given the long run already, we were two of probably less than 10 people in the whole place...... I have paid very little attention to the whole, evolving, 3D thing in the last few years -- the story, picture, soundtrack, and presentation was a near religious experience for us. It was absolutely stunning, and one of the best values in a cinema event I've ever had.... ever. Just gotta say - MF

Labor watchers say a dramatic structural makeover is urgently needed. By Richard Verrier January 25, 2009 This evening, hundreds of stars will line the Shrine Auditorium to toast their peers in the 15th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Back when the crackling of a record doubled as ambient noise, Ray Dolby conceived the unthinkable—that he could provide the public with crisp, clean sound. So, in the mid ’60s, he began work on a state-of-the-art noise-reduction system that would not only revolutionize tape and album recording, but also change the way we listen. Dolby, a Portland-born, Stanford-educated engineer, worked with Ampex Corporation on the world’s first videotape recorder throughout his collegiate career. He then enrolled at Cambridge University, where he earned a Ph.D. in physics, and briefly served as a technical advisor for the United Nations. But in 1965, he branched out on his own to la…

For the past four years, my boomer (Ron Sherouse) and myself have volunteered as mentors for a student film out of Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. The film is part of Kodak's annual 35mm Project. Brooks has opted to do their film in a unique way by having every job on the set mentored by working professionals. The opportunity to teach our craft to willing students is really quite rewarding. I now have a group of "sound pups" all beginning their careers as a result of this experience. For most of the students it is their first opportunity to work on a traditional film set. The project has been fun as well as rewarding. The shoots have been part…

Veteran's Day was originally called "Armistice Day", and was celebrated on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, November 11th. Originally celebrated in honor of the end of WWI, the war to end all wars. I am not a veteran, but I went and stood in Asheville NC for 5 hours today with Veterans for Peace in honor of Armistice Day. The Asheville chapter of Veterans for Peace is maintaining a vigil in downtown Asheville for 24 hours. They started at 9 AM today, and will keep it up until 9 AM tomorrow. Last year in Asheville, at this same vigil, 3 veterans were arrested for breaking the park curfew of 10 PM. Of course, the police waited until after midnight to ma…

Insolvency specialist SFP has confirmed that the assets of wireless microphone manufacturer Audio Engineering Ltd have been sold to Micronwireless Ltd, a company run by Audio Engineering’s former director Yogesh Tankaria (‘Tanky’). In a statement, SFP said: “Issues stemmed from Audio Engineering Limited’s inability to implement a new line of digital systems, and have been exacerbated by an increase in worldwide competition and product innovation. As a direct result, turnover has been steadily declining, and recently reached an unsustainable level. “After it was determined additional funding would not improve the London-based company’s market position, the company cease…
