After reading "Strike the Baby and Kill the Blonde" I'd like to forward updated definitions to some common terms we all know and love... Low Budget Movie Terms 2012 Redefined -Room Tone: Those moments of clean audio that occur when the directors super hot girlfriend forgets her lines and stares off in the distance.. Generally, 5-10 seconds of clean room tone can be obtained using this method. -Pre-Production: The month's or weeks leading up to the actual production of a movie where the Producer, Director and DP sit around the office and discus how super awesome the project is going to turn out without actually doing any work towards meeting that goal. …

When "Quiet please" just don't cut it 1 2

Familiarity's inevitable evolution into contempt is nowhere more evident than on the set of certain TV shows I've worked on. In the beginning, "quiet please" was usually enough to bring the noise down to a dull roar, but then as time and dedication go by, after about three years on the same show, with or without the same crew, it seems that certain levels of what can only be described as either arrogance or ignorance or both are arrived at. Where once a polite request for quiet would reduce the idle chatter to manageable levels, now we have reached the point where a loud "Shut up" is necessary, just so that the director can communicate with the actors. It has evolved to …

I just had a nice visit with Glen Sanders along with John Coffey and Robert from Coffey sound on the set here at Universal Studios. I was impressed with the digital wireless transmitter/recorders and with the IFB system which transmits jammable timecode to the flash cards for later download along with the audio. I'm not explaining this very well but the issue I have is not with the excellent equipment and ideas that Zaxcom have presented, but with the moral concerns about having a transmitter on an actor which is recording constantly whether or not we are rolling. I didn't have time to ask Glen certain questions with regard to these concerns, but I hope that there is faci…

There is no doubt in my mind actors are capable of tapping into a breadth of human dynamics most of us will never understand. I've lived with them, worked with them and rode the rollercoaster as a scripted character is brought to life. The issue at hand is who has the duty to enforce discipline on an individual failing to grasp who they really are and where they are … (out of touch with the present). Out of touch project members in any department are a threat to our safety and our future... These folks need to be disciplined. Friendships and politics sometimes keep that from happening. If you've worked on sets with drunks, drug addicts or people under th…

This is a recent post from the RedUser Group: I've just seen the start of the race to the bottom and a company renting out scarlet packages for $1250 a week? Why would anyone do that? What good can possibly come of devaluing the price of your kit that much. I've seen Epics go for $100 a day. Come on people -- wake up and smell the coffee. I'm all for free enterprise, but not blatent foolishness where no one benefits from the long term effects of such short sighted short term thinking. I'm not surprised. I'm just sad. I left the stills industry as I saw its demise by similar short term opportunists and it's all set to happen all over again with moving images. It would…

Being out of the loop so to speak, is anyone on the forum working right now? I am curious about those 40 or so (?) "Independently Produced" projects that SAG/AFTRA and WGA have let continue on during the strike, along with IATSE notice that it was "legal" for members to not cross the picket lines. How about in locales other that the USA? What's up in the real world? Inquiring minds want to know. D.

I would like to start this thread to help answer some of the questions that I have read on several other threads on this group. I want to choose my words carefully as not to offend anyone who might be working in a manner inconsistent with my beliefs. As far a the crew goes, I believe that it is important on any long form project to work as a three person crew. The budget certainly should not be a determining factor on the need to have a third person. As we all know, lower budget projects, more likely then not, will require the need for a third person more so then bigger budget projects. Let’s look at why we as a sound department need a third person. 1.To deal …

Just finished watching (well listening mostly) a movie I mixed last year and can hear those wonderfully fought for production dialog tracks. It was a tough shoot, tons of steady cam and the old faithful Tram Tr50 carried the day on the lead actress when Mr Steadycam or multicam was in use.. A tip of the hat to my Boom Op Matty Boom Boom, it was his first show and about to start our 6th movie as a team next week..

My Boom Operator, Jeff Erdmann put this song together with Garageband during the WGA Strike Hiatus. You'll all get a kick out of it! I can't upload it to this site (file is too large) so play it or download it here: http://www.macjams.com/song/40791 If you like it - drop him a line and tell him Jeff Erdmann <jeffsoundman@yahoo.com> Enjoy, RL

Thanks to Robert Kennedy of Coffey Sound, I'm testing a pair of the miniature supercardioid DPA 4098-BM's. Now known to be a 4081 I had a quick listen to one of them about a week ago and was blown away. First the quality of the small microphone was very close to a Schoeps 441. The size makes it ideal for concealment or as a plant microphone. In fact my real test will be in a Corvette, with two actors and I'll plant them off the visors. Their size is a distinct advantage over my preferred choice of a pair of Schoeps, either with a GVC or a collette cable. It is getting much more difficult to hide good sounding mics with the hand held camera craze inside an auto…

A producer I have worked with before wanted me to cut my rate to do some "Simple Sit down Interviews" and she also wanted to feed audio to 5D and not run double system. I told her no to both and this is the email I got today. Remind me to never again do an interview without you there. I just uploaded the footage from yesterday and it's totally unusable. God knows what the camera op did, he said he knew what he was doing, but the audio sounds like the people are 100 miles away and we're in a wind tunnel. It was this wealthy couple who totally rearranged they're schedule to do this for me. I'm mortified. Anyway - just want you to know I've always appreciated your …

That Tremolux must have sounded great! And a 2X12 Bassman would be cool! What ever you do, don't click this link: https://reverb.com/marketplace?query=Bassman 2x12 Instead, buy local. Cleaning out the shop, first time really doing it in 20+ years. Here's a part of the pile of LMB etc project widget boxes made for jobs and then forgotten, until today, mostly. I sure found a lot of stuff I thought I'd gotten rid of.....I found really ancient stuff, like my ECM50s and a big box of dead Trams from the 1980s. Why was I keeping this stuff again? philp

That's right, you read it correctly. In 1986 President Ronald Reagan signed the "Immigration Reform and Control Act" ("IRCA") to require employers to verify the identity and the eligibility of ALL employees hired to work in the United States. From that point on everyone had to fill in a required I-9 form before being legally employed. In those 24 years, think how many times those of us in the Los Angeles area film industry have filled in one of these I-9 forms? I would guess each of us has done so over a thousand times or more. However in the early 90's the CSTAF, the Contract Services Administration Fund asked each of us to personally go to the fund headquarters…

A Mystery Frequency Disrupted Car Fobs in an Ohio City, and Now Residents Know Why It sounded like something from an episode of “The X-Files”: Starting a few weeks ago, in a suburban neighborhood a few miles from a NASA research center in Ohio, garage door openers and car key fobs mysteriously stopped working. Garage door repair people, local ham radio enthusiasts and other volunteer investigators descended on the neighborhood with various meters. Everyone agreed that something powerful was interfering with the radio frequency that many fobs rely on, but no one could identify the source. Rest of the story, about a five-minute read: https:…

As I sit here with a potent drink, I thought I'd share the events of today and see if this is the norm...That is, if my still trembling hands will allow me to type it. About three weeks ago I wrapped on a movie. It's the third I've done for this particular director. This is by far the biggest production we've done, the first that didn't feel like a student film, and the first for either of us on the RED. I'm also doing the post sound, so today I went to his house to take a look at the first 20 minutes of rough cut. Now, on location I recorded to my 744T, but I also sent a feed to the camera for him to edit with. I had heard that RED's audio was...buggy...but for…
