Does anyone have any information on the rumored writers' strike or is it just that, a rumor. I have heard of certain shows shooting extra episodes in case the season collapses later this year, but no solid info as yet. Regards Mick

Anyone experience a hijack on this site this morning ? As I clicked on "jwsound.net" I was redirected to "blackinternet.se" where an exe file "activate.exe" was trying to run. Norton Internet Security stopped the file from running and put in in quarantine. Anyone else have this experience ?

I have an image that was scanned from a seriously deteriorated photo and I would like to send it to someone on our group who could do a real restoration job on it. I imagine that this is the sort of thing that can be done with Photoshop if you know how. The primary corrections will be remove bad colorations in many areas. I will post a small sample of the image here and if anyone is interested in tackling it I will send you the highest resolution scan I can find. It is a picture many of you have seen before. It is special for me and I would love to have it in better shape than it is now. Thanks.

Today, I have experienced a nightmare in a cooking show. Wireless & Induction Kitchen Some sort info's: Wireless was Sennheiser G3 (626 MHz - 688 MHz) and G2 (780 MHz - 822 MHz). Lavaliers was DPA 4061. I know, 780 MHz - 822 MHz isn't very good here; but usable. The kitchen was without any extra furniture, so the whole system (below glass surface) was expsosed (not visible to camera of course). When the chef was turned on the kitchen for cooking; wireless went crazy, both of them. The sound was something like huge noise gate, plus extreme denoise, plus extreme compression. Like RF swallow into black hole (use your imagination). …

'I will mumble this only once': BBC's Nazi drama SS-GB hit by dialogue complaints SS-GB, the BBC’s new alternative history miniseries, has become the corporation’s latest primetime costume drama to be marred by complaints about mumbling. The audience for the second episode of Jamaica Inn fell by 1.6 million after the initial complaints. The BBC’s controller of drama commissioning, Ben Stephenson, was apologised to viewers and promised the corporation would examine the sound issues that plagued the first episode. https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2017/feb/20/i-will-mumble-this-only-once-bbcs-new-nazi-drama-ss-gb-hit-by-dialogue-complaints

I posted on r.a.m.p.s. newsgroup with the information and links to the 2012 annual RAMPS Party at NAB. I was worried that no one had posted anything on r.a.m.p.s. about the party this year. My post was the last post made to r.a.m.p.s. and that was 5 days ago! Is r.a.m.p.s. newsgroup really dead or is there something wrong with my newsgroup reader?

I read this post from a friend on a social media site and I think it is very bang on. One can own 2 Devas, a Nomad, 3 788's, a 633, 8 radio mics from Lectro, 10 from Zaxcom, 6 from Audio Limited, a Cooper, a Solice, 4 Yamaha's, and every mic ever made. Put it all in a Airstream to carry it around in as you tow it with a Cadillac and you can still be a failure in our business if you don't know these simple things. Thanks Rich. This certainly is not your daddy's Motion Picture Academy. After an L.A. Times article 'accusing' the Academy of having a membership of mostly white, males. The article's point is that a private society needs to reflect the country's demographics. The latest brouhaha was wether Sacha Baron Cohen could walk the Red Carpet in his "Dictator" costume. Well the Board of Governors saw a ratings bonanza and after first refusing him, and calling it a "stunt" and revoking his tickets, has relented. Maybe next year the people who play Batman, The Hulk, and a Pirate on Hollywood Boulevard can appear too. Here is the news from Deadline Hollywood. (this link has bee…

Hi all . I very much enjoy reading your on the job stories and learning from all of you . Thought I would share my recent work experience. Sorry if boring. I took a turn from my usual work in the corporate world and worked a 98 page independent film. I have worked shorts before but nothing this lengthly. Well it paid for 10 new storm windows and a storm door and I did have a lot of fun and laughs with the young folk. After three days into the shoot I get a call from the director = producer= main actor telling me his editor says my track one is total garbage , cannot use any of it ! ( I wanted to meet the editor before shooting started but he hadn’t found anyone ye…

Working now on "Hitchcock, The Making of Psycho". Soon we have stage scenes with equipment and crew filming the psycho movie. Does anyone know what type of microphone would be of that vintage? Would they have used a fisher boom or a mole Richardson boom? Also, is there a male boom operator (only because in those times there were no females) out there that knows how to use this piece of equipment proficiently that is also a member of sag? Let me know...Thanks

Just was leafing through the latest HD Video Pro magazine and hit the section called Cine Sound Pro. with an article on Boom Mic Techniques. Please note the illustration on the cover and later in the article. The boom man has a shotgun mic aimed at least 6 feet above what the camera is shooting. If pointing at a person for dialogue you would never have the boom on the pole at the angle it is illustrated.... Maybe if they were doing an article on boom techniques they would have an illustrator that knows something about booming. Also the hanging cable from the boom pole is in danger of getting in the shot or at least getting in the way of the cameraman.

I am working on a movie right now and had a tight fitting cocktail dress on a young lady Saturday night. I hate those things. Wardrobe wants to do the placement because I can not get to it with the dress zipped up. I finally gave her a hide a mic bra clip and it still had clothing rub. I hate to be defeated over this and the rest of the crew just shrugs at the issue. I can tell some appreciate my tenacity and some don't. Any suggestions.

This was originally posted on the facebook jwsound group: I wanted to share with the group my experience of visiting Zaxcom today. Not only were they happy to show me around, they picked me up from the bus station and treated me to lunch as well! Glenn, Howie and Colleen all came out and we enjoyed a nice lunch at The Cheesecake Factory. Afterwords they drove me to their facility in Pompton Plains, New Jersey. If you haven't been and are from California, it's kind of like Valencia but greener. Upon arrival to the facility I was amazed to see an Electronic Engineer's heaven. Multiple workstations where dozens, if not hundreds of new wireless devices were being han…

In case you're not tired of the topic, here's a column from today's issue of The Guardian, prompted (I guess), by Nolan's new book. ==== Tenet up: listen, Christopher Nolan, we just can't hear a word you're saying The Tenet director has dismissed critics of his poor sound mixing by blaming us for being too conservative. Why must he keep toying with our perception of sound? We’re all aware of the impossible situation that film currently finds itself in. Screens started shutting in the summer. This is because the big new movies have all been postponed. This is because movie studios are nervous about losses. And this is because Tenet, t…

Mild quandary - A film I sound edited has just won another prize at a film festival ( Best feature ) great! it was a cool project - issue is a chap whom did a couple of days keeps going on as if he was responsible for the sound editing - Essentially almost everything he did ( the foley edit ) was thrown out during the mix because it was generally out of sync and the performance ( whom someone else did ) wasn't great - most of what we did use I recut, we just didn't have time to deal with the rest. We mixed it in 4 days, they were some long days. He's credited as foley editor which I'm okay with, but it's definitely feeling like he's taking too much credit. Thin…
