New use for 664 (for me), PA mixer @ my son's wedding. Why? Long story, mission creep and so on. Lavs, handhelds, playback, rec isos for the friends-shooting-with-DSLRs, feed the speakers. I sat the 664 bag on a crate in front of me in the front row and was Dad-of-Groom and PA-boy at the same time. What we do for our kids….3 setups (ceremony, dinner, dance), stay until it's all over to pack up the rental speakers etc. Fun times that I'm glad are over…. Here's why I did it:

Warning to 688 owners if you've bought the machine before v2.1 firmware be aware that when the firmware trial period runs out as mine did today my machine wouldn't drop into record , a message comes up on the recorder saying please download latest firmware it was nearly very embarrassing luckily I was near Wifi and was able to upgrade before the client was aware but I must question the practice of blocking the recorder from working, hoping this doesn't happen in future updates Best Giancarlo

I just received our union magazine, the 695 Quarterly, and I read it cover to cover, thoroughly enjoying every bit of it! The statements from our President, Mark Ulano, about the importance of our relationship to the union, Jim Osburn's thoughtful, realistic and personal assessment of the new head of the AMPTP, Carol Ann Lombardini, Esq., the profile story on "Father Time", Mike Denecke, one of nicest most creative, humble people I have ever known. The editorial team at Local 695 is to be congratulated and celebrated: David Waelder, Richard Lightstone and Eric Pierce. Regards, Jeff Wexler

I always enjoy receiving my issue of the 695 Quarterly and this new one is no exception. All of it was good as usual but I really enjoyed Mark Ulano's message. It is indeed a new day for us and all the crafts in film making. Good read. Thanks to the team that puts it out. Big fan. CrewC

Under the heading "Hollywood rethinks use of pricey A-list actors" MSNBC's website writes; [glow=red,2,300]LOS ANGELES - Hollywood studios are now thinking twice about splurging on A-list movie stars and costly productions in reaction to the poor economy, but also because of the surprising success of recent films with unknown actors.[/glow] And while on the road to work listening to Mark and Brian this morning, I heard them quote form a news article that Johnny Depp would receive thirty three point six million (Yes, that's $33, 600,000) to reprise his Jack Sparrow role in the fourth (and hopefully final) installment of "Pirates of the Caribbean" Oh, and he also has a b…

I just found out Beasts of the Southern Wild just won the grand Jury prize at Sundance this year. It was an interesting shoot to say the least. I got a frantic call from the producers at 9:30 on a Thursday night. There original mixer couldn't make it the next day. I said sure, drove 3 1/2 hrs to what I thought was day play. Day was done, they asked if I could do tomorrow. Well, 2 days turned to 30. I couldn't complete the project due to a prior commitment but can tell you the young star was a sweet little firecracker. Anyway, it took them 2 years to complete and happy for all involved. If you read the interview, checkout the mic in the upper corner! It's one of my favori…

IA Local 829, United Scenic Artists New York, has signed a non-compromised contract with the AICP. Below is a cut-n-pasted letter posted on the 52 Members newsgroup: Hi everyone, I received this letter recently from IA 829, and I found the contrast to our negotiation interesting, we have a lot to learn. To ALL: On Wednesday of this week, we reached an agreement with the AICP for a new three term of our Commercial Production Agreement that includes a 3% raise in each year of the contract. We defeated their attempt to impose provisions for 'low budget' and 'non-traditional' commercials on us. Going forward for the next three years, all comme…

Why, you might ask, am I building a new cart? There is no rational answer --- I did start out to build a smaller, upright follow cart, but now I'm not really sure what I'm going to do with this. First time using StarCase rack kit (now that it is available in aluminum black powder coated) and I literally got this basic frame together in 2 hours. It is amazingly light (I know, nothing in it yet!) and very rigid structurally. It may end up just housing a stack of drawers, I don't know. In any case, I recommend StarCase as a source for anyone who really wants to build their own cart without having to rely on help from fabricators, welders, etc.

Last week I worked on a reality show shoot picking a contest winner Upon receiving the schedule and call sheet I noticed the job of "transportographer" listed so on I inquired to the producer as to what this job was. He explained that they felt they could combine each of the talent van drivers with the behind the scenes photographers. His reasoning was that nothing worth being photographed happened while everyone was in the van and that paying a van driver to wait around was un needed all his colleagues loved it and wish they had thought of it . So they hired two recent college grads from a photo programs and thus created the new job title transportographer. Look for it …

I guess this is for the Mixer who has everything... A Dutch company has developed a pair of high-tech trousers equipped with a wireless rubber keyboard stitched over the groin for those who need to dash out a line of code on the go. “The idea was that you could log in to your computer and control it without sitting in a closed environment behind your desk,” designer Erik de Nijs told the Daily Mail. The digital dungarees also sport a wireless mouse in the back pocket and a pair of speakers sewn into the thighs. The company that came up with the idea, Nieuwue Heren, run by de Nijs and his partner Tim Smit, have aptly called their jeans, “Beauty and the …

Today we decorated an F900 as follows: Miranda downconvertor, 3 TX (TC to me, TC to script, SD video to video assist), 2 audio RX (from me), battery, big zoom, rods, matte box w/ filters, follow-focus, battery for video assist TX, 8" HD monitor. Handheld all day, w/ very short-attention-span shooter-director. Ass't cam, DIT, me, script, AD, 2nd AD, talent, bunch of extras, clients, grip, art, wardrobe, hair/MU and electric all running behind and then frantically ducking out of the way as the camera would pan around. Bay Meadows racetrack in San Mateo. Long day. (All dialog done directly under PA speakers.) Philip Perkins

I have not posted on here for some time, still manning the FISHER 7 and so pleased with how well it performs for me.. A few shows ago with live audience, I had a big ball o string at the big crank pulley 5 min: before rolling on a different set, I did not panic but said holly fuck to myself for good luck,, but I had my boom up and running with a temp restringing of that cord string and a full restringing after the show was over. I just needed to get it up and running ASAP. I knew that day would come, when that would happen to one of the booms, in fact I had many work dreams about it and what to do so I was prepared to deal with it if it ever happened. On Tues. I will go i…

Web spots or whatever they are called nowadays for the "Jawbone" noise-canceling Bluetooth headset. Normal low-budg production sound in spectacularly noisy conditions that they didn't really care about. What they really wanted was the audio recorded thru the phone with their headset. This involved finding a landline phone line somewhere near where we were shooting (often blocks away to find a cooperative person who would let us camp on their phone line all day and have 7 or 8 strangers in their house listening), walkie talkie communications between the redoubtable Frances (recording the phones) and me (on the set). Slating thru the phone, 2 recorders and slate jam syn…

Cross-Posted from IndieTalk Forum: Hi all, Please excuse me, but I have to get this off of my chest. What is it with Producers and Directors who relegate the sound of their films to an after thought? Without sound a film is just a bunch of pretty pictures without meaning. And yet many refuse to budget a reasonable amount of money to the sound of their project. I get at least a dozen requests each week to do work on a project for credit and promises of future paying work, which, of course, never materializes. "But it's a great project!" If I had ten bucks for every time I heard that I would have paid off my studio by now! It cost me over $50k just to sonical…
