My father challenged the last election held by the Camera Local 600 where he was declared ineligible to accept a nomination to the National Executive Board (NEB). The Department of Labor, after an extensive investigation, required that Local 600 re-run the election. The incumbent officers, leaders and staff at the Union immediately initiated a smear campaign, putting up obstacles to the normal and lawful communications afforded those running for office in the Union. My father had to communicate to the membership on his own, not so much as to campaign for his election, but to inform the membership what had been going down. Below is a copy of the letter he sent out to the f…

Saw "Frost/Nixon" today and thought it was a very good film. I don't think even once I thought about the sound, except during the credits when I realized I hadn't thought about it. This, I think, probably has to do with both the actors' skill and Peter's tracks. Nice work.

Here I am in 1976 holding the original Les Drever mic mount. It was beautifully made, particularly the handle and angle adjustment. It utilized bands of spring steel that supported the microphone clip assembly that sat on 2 soft rubber pucks (attached to the spring steel by epoxy glue --- this was one of the weak points of the design). It had excellent shockmount characteristics and was very light weight. Notice also that I am wearing bell bottom jeans.

In TV Technology there is an interesting article on the Grammy Awards this year. I have read several comments complaining about how the mix sounded on your home television. Basically it was mixed 5.1 and then the 2.0 mix "happens at your set top box". There were more than 600 microphones used on the show. Relocation hassles afflict line producers Expense reimbursements lowered, leases not signed By PETER CARANICAS Relocation costs are hitting below-the-liners forced to work outside L.A. on pics such as the New Mexico-shot "Cowboys and Aliens." As studios tighten budgets and shoot more films outside of Los Angeles in pursuit of tax incentives, some line producers are being hit hard by relocation issues and new costs as they travel to follow the productions. In some cases the routine coverage of housing costs is a thing of the past. "It's more common now for companies to give you a flat relocation allowance," said a UPM who's based in New Orleans. "A regular …

This road sign caught my eye. The way this industry is going often I kind of feel like a cheap prostitute, especially after the Producer promises me "first-class accommodations". Then when I arrive on the location after ten hours of travel, I'm told by the production office that all the "good" rooms are gone and we are going to have to put you up in the Holiday Inn, where the grips are staying! http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1263210/Italian-prostitutes-road-sign-warn-motorists-impending-distraction.html?ITO=1490 RL

This may be of interest to many in our sound community, those who are committed to democratic representative unions, some of these things revealed in the website "Viewfinder Redux" put up by the most active members fighting for a representative union. The link below is to one of the blog posts from my old friend Alan Disler. Viewfinder Redux Note: the Camera "Guild" is really just a labor UNION... they changed their name to avoid anyone thinking they should function as a labor union, committed to securing the best Wages and Working conditions for its members.

Iraqi Cinema

After dark years, lights coming back on for Iraqi cinema (Reuters) - The din of power generators, tangle of jerry-rigged electric wiring and hassle of security checkpoints are all part of the movie business in Iraq, not to mention the lack of studio space and dearth of experienced crews. But actors like Sadiq Abbas are just happy to get back to work. "The journey of a thousand miles starts with one step," Abbas said on the set of a short film shot recently in Baghdad. "Let's take this as the first step for Iraqi cinema." War and international sanctions have left most of Iraq's infrastructure and industry - including the movie industry - in sham…

Hi all, I think it's a good idea to have one place for all news coming from NAB, including live streaming links, interesting products outside from production sound world etc. Looking forward to see what NAB has to show us this year. There will the famous party, right? Thank you, Vasileios

I always enjoy receiving my issue of the 695 Quarterly and this new one is no exception. All of it was good as usual but I really enjoyed Mark Ulano's message. It is indeed a new day for us and all the crafts in film making. Good read. Thanks to the team that puts it out. Big fan. CrewC
