Interesting headline in INDIEWIRE this week... ‘Dunkirk’ Is Too Loud For Some Viewers, But Christopher Nolan Says That’s the Way He Likes It Complaints are starting to mount. Is it bad theaters, Nolan's unorthodox and bold use of sound, or is it just too damn loud? Yesterday during an advance screening of “Atomic Blonde,” the roar of “Dunkirk” from the theater below could be heard — and felt — above and beyond an ass-kicking Charlize Theron. Christopher Nolan’s World War II movie is loud — but when does soundscape become bombast? “It was VERY loud. Too loud in fact,” wrote a Reddit user in a popular post titled “PSA: A warning …

There are some new gloves out that might actually keep your hands warm! I've never had good luck with gloves, but these look fool proof: http://www.gorgonz.com/ <img src="http://img.timeinc.net/popsci/images/2007/01/wgoods_20070129_glove.JPG">

This one goes out to Landon who wanted to hear some old USC film school stories. Way back when I went, (71 thru 75 ) the school was on the east side of campus, off Figueroa St. between the freshman men an women dorms. No coed back then. The school was housed in a old WW1 barn and stable complex that had a central courtyard where all met and smoked and talked about 'Cinema', the war, girls, (cause sadly there were only 4 or 5 in the school then), or John Lennon and Harry Nillson getting kicked out of the Troubador. We were young and thought we knew it all. I had a curly blond Fro and every one had long hair except the navy guys who were cool, just didn't look it. I never t…

Hi All, I have been a subscriber of Production Weekly since 2004. Each week I get an email of the PDF file of shows in pre-production. The last update I got was May 3rd, so naturally I tried to contact the company to make sure they had the correct billing info, email etc. To my surprise their web site ( www.ProductionWeekly.com) would not give me access, the emails I sent them have remained unanswered and their 800 phone number and 310 Fax number are disconnected? I've seen other queries on the same mystery, across the web. Does anyone have an answer to the difficulty in contacting the company? Regards, Richard

I have had the pleasure n frustration of teaching others the art of sound recording for film. It is a long process that really only makes sense when one does it a few million times. Doing is learning. When I first started learning,(still learning), the craft, I had an advantage that most of the new generation does not. We had dailies. Shoot all day and on the following day at lunch or after work we saw n heard our work projected to a large screen and over a simi nice sound system. What a great way to learn what worked or didn't. Not just the sound. Picture, acting, story telling, directing, all of it. Better than any film school for learning all aspects of the craft. So …

After reading "Strike the Baby and Kill the Blonde" I'd like to forward updated definitions to some common terms we all know and love... Low Budget Movie Terms 2012 Redefined -Room Tone: Those moments of clean audio that occur when the directors super hot girlfriend forgets her lines and stares off in the distance.. Generally, 5-10 seconds of clean room tone can be obtained using this method. -Pre-Production: The month's or weeks leading up to the actual production of a movie where the Producer, Director and DP sit around the office and discus how super awesome the project is going to turn out without actually doing any work towards meeting that goal. …

We had our now 4th annual Atlanta Sound Mixer Barbecue Saturday at mine and Kathy's house. We had sound friends from all over the country join us as well as friends from most of our vendors and manufacturers. We roasted two pigs and Lectrosonics brought brisket and smoked chicken. Gotham and PSC provided deserts, Trew and Zaxcom provide brew. Everyone was very generous with all of the food that was brought.

This is a recent post from the RedUser Group: I've just seen the start of the race to the bottom and a company renting out scarlet packages for $1250 a week? Why would anyone do that? What good can possibly come of devaluing the price of your kit that much. I've seen Epics go for $100 a day. Come on people -- wake up and smell the coffee. I'm all for free enterprise, but not blatent foolishness where no one benefits from the long term effects of such short sighted short term thinking. I'm not surprised. I'm just sad. I left the stills industry as I saw its demise by similar short term opportunists and it's all set to happen all over again with moving images. It would…

I don't feel quite so old now. If Keith can keep doing what he's doing, so can I. It's only rock and roll (but I like it). Musician Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones performs at Echoplex on April 27, 2013 in Los Angeles, California. The Rolling Stones played a surprise club gig tonight in Los Angeles at the Echoplex - leading up to the launch of their "50 & Counting" tour on May 3, 2013 at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. Am I the only one doing this? Instead of futzing around breaking down the Deva, comtek, wirelesses and a mini mixer to go and sit in the front with the driver, I had our friendly yet constantly ribbing grips load my whole cart on the insert car. No fuss, zero hold up and I had everything at my disposal that I would have on a non moving location. They secured me in with some speed rail and ratchet straps and other than some wind issues with my antennas, it went very smoothly. We rarely have insert car work but whenever it's called for in the future that's the way I'm doing it.

Well, actually this is just a history of the sound carts I have built over the last 38 years. <img src="http://api.ning.com/files/i*B6Na7AziTzL1jFYrQOtkauyVx4rGPKeq5WWn4TsTDuiLUpUadRHGkTZDsrrYYxP3*JTHvdM7ZB2AH*Cgj8RRFqTEUZzi9C/cartno.6.2.jpg" alt="" width="338" height="225" style="float: left;"/> I have posted a history of the sound carts I have built over the last 38 years. Take a look at it <a href="http://web.me.com/jwsound/Site/soundcarts.html">HERE</a> I have completed construction on a new sound cart and I will be putting up images in this article in the next day or so.

They are asking us for input, what we wanna see in an upcoming new wireless RX/TX kit. It's a tough market with fairly reasonable options from Sony and Sennheiser in the low budget segment, so interesting to see what they will come with to compete with these industry giants. https://wavreport.com/2018/06/04/deity-microphones-going-wireless/

I'm sure we've all seen it happen, or maybe it happened to you. It's usually done in good spirit and although the newbie may have been a little embarrassed at the time, in the end you can usually have a good laugh about it. So let's hear some ! I remember seeing a young PA run around a whole afternoon looking for a the black and white video tapes. Apparently the cameraman had convinced him that he had only brought the colour ones with him.

Hello, Soundies -- A project I'm prepping has a scene with Rush Limbaugh (or, a reasonable facsimile), and I'm hoping to find a good-sounding, good-looking version of his microphone - the legendary GOLD ElectroVoice RE-20. I hope there's one out there that I might rent - please tell me ! Thanks -- Glenn Berkovitz glennb@pobox.com (Hollywood)

Interesting... WAV audio files are now being used to hide malicious code Steganography malware trend moving from PNG and JPG to WAV files. [a couple excerpts] The technique is known as steganography -- the art of hiding information in plain sight, in another data medium. The first of these two new malware campaigns abusing WAV files was reported back in June. Symantec security researchers said they spotted a Russian cyber-espionage group known as Waterbug (or Turla) using WAV files to hide and transfer malicious code from their server to already-infected victims. The second malware campaign was spotted this month by BlackBerry …

As I sit here with a potent drink, I thought I'd share the events of today and see if this is the norm...That is, if my still trembling hands will allow me to type it. About three weeks ago I wrapped on a movie. It's the third I've done for this particular director. This is by far the biggest production we've done, the first that didn't feel like a student film, and the first for either of us on the RED. I'm also doing the post sound, so today I went to his house to take a look at the first 20 minutes of rough cut. Now, on location I recorded to my 744T, but I also sent a feed to the camera for him to edit with. I had heard that RED's audio was...buggy...but for…

Couldn't resist--the discussion of "cart-names" came up in the "Nicole Kidman Insert Car Injury" thread, so I thought I'd give it its own home. My cart's name: "The Ship Of Love", or, more intimately: the "Carte d'Amore". Philip Perkins

So pleased that we have someone who replies to everybody's posts! What a blessing for this site. So often the answers are so concise, so economical in the choice of words, so helpful. I have been archiving these answers, hoping someday to publish a reference work "Words of Wisdom from JWSOUNDGROUP". Chapter One: "Yes" followed by Chapter Two: "It Depends", Chapter Three: "Read the Effin' Manual", "Do a Search", and on and on.

I am working on a movie right now and had a tight fitting cocktail dress on a young lady Saturday night. I hate those things. Wardrobe wants to do the placement because I can not get to it with the dress zipped up. I finally gave her a hide a mic bra clip and it still had clothing rub. I hate to be defeated over this and the rest of the crew just shrugs at the issue. I can tell some appreciate my tenacity and some don't. Any suggestions.

I was outside stage 5 at Paramount between set ups and saw a young man pushing a sound cart between stages. I introduced myself to Devendra Cleary who was filling in for Phil Palmer on Glee. The thing that struck me over and above how nice he was, was the great looking sound cart he was pushing. If he posts here I'd love to know what type it was, or if anyone else knows I'd appreciate it. Thanks Mick

I start a show on Monday, TV PILOT. They have a "capture van", filled with computers, that will record all the image and audio. 2 Grass Valley cameras ( that record nothing, all info goes to the "capture Van") are connected to a DIT, and this "capture van". They have 17 CAST MEMBERS. I am sending 8 tracks digital audio to the truck, time code back to me, and 2 video back to me as well. All on cat two (2) 5 cable. I was told " BE READY TO MOVE QUICK, WE ARE GOING TO RUN AND GUN" I think these morons are going to shoot "wide and tight", because the producer who hired me will not say they are not. Coleman "these people are on the cutting edge of something..." …
