The party-planning committee has been hard at work organizing the annual RAMPS/JWSound party held during the NAB conference in Las Vegas. Well, most of us just made some posts to JWS. But Kathy Baca of Lectrosonics has been hard at work. Thanks Kathy! The annual RAMPS/JWSound Mixer Mixer will again take place on the Tuesday night of NAB. This year, that's April 8, 2014. We will gather at the Satay Thai Bistro, same place we've used the last few years: http://sataylasvegas.com Probable Start: 6:30pm Probably Stop: 9:30pm The Satay Grille will provide us with a buffet of Thai, Indonesian, and Malay dishes (probably including some vegetarian dishes)…

Too funny... I've heard this lament from editors too many times before! Courtesy of editor Chris Bové on Facebook. (And before anybody protests, we've all been on shoots where we've asked to record roomtone and been overruled by AD's, UPMs, even directors.)

I fell out of my chair yesterday watching an episode of the ABC fantasy series Forever where the lead cop (actually a medical examiner) brought in a Nagra 4.2 to play an early 1960s open reel tape in a scene. The two sequences show some pretty good close-ups of the machine, and I got a big chuckle out of technology this old being used in a 2015 TV series... [Now a new & improved clip with repaired audio!]

MLK’s Call for Economic Justice Posted on Jan 16, 2015 By Eugene Robinson mdgn / Shutterstock.com The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s economic message was fiery and radical. To our society’s great shame, it has also proved timeless. As we celebrate King’s great achievement and sacrifice, it is wrong to round off the sharp edges of his legacy. He saw inequality as a fundamental and tragic flaw in this society, and he made clear in the weeks leading up to his assassination that economic issues were becoming the central focus of his advocacy. Nearly five decades later, King’s words on the subject still ring true. On March 10, 1968, just weeks before his death, he …

If you work in sound or film, you will come to know the name Walter Murch by your colleagues' tone when they say it. This is the man responsible for movies you remember for the dance between sound and picture—he shaped them both—The Conversation, The English Patient, Apocalypse Now, Cold Mountain—and those are just a few of his picture editing and sound mixing credits. Read more here: http://transom.org/2005/walter-murch/

Stopped by Trew Audio in LA today to pick up some items. Still under construction but open for business and I must say it's an impressive plan being built out in the old Pacific Radio building. Way to go Glen and company. CrewC

Always been a big fan with the soundtrack and location sound work on this film. Jeff I wonder if you wouldn't mind sharing a few memories with this film? I don't mean to intrude and I hope this hasn't been discussed but I did use google to search for this. The vocal sound is very smooth, very consistent and I think this is rare in a lot of films in the last 10 years. I appreciated your youtube video suggesting the dangers in using close booming for tight shots and more distant booming for mediums. Better to keep a distance that can cut well in post. I wish there were more youtube videos like it, they are gold and no better to learn the psycology of so…

DPA Microphones Hits the Road with Counting Cars Our very own Rado Stefanov featured here - two-fold posting this. One, to obviously give his work on the show a little shout out and two, to say thanks for being understanding and helpful in a recent transaction. Always nice to see all areas of the sound community covered here and the individuals so willing to interact with (almost) no hesitation to anyone intelligently curious (and who has used the search function). Having said that, sorry if this is posted somewhere else :-p. (Yes, I used the search!) Cheers

A Hollywood/LA legend has passed away. We never knew his full name or back story, to us he was Kenny the Knife Guy. Wherever we shot in DT LA, Kenny would roll up on his bicycle with a raggedy box full of knifes for sale. Somehow he knew where every film crew was shooting and he'd make his rounds. Most people I know bought at least one at some point in time. I hear it was a sudden heart attack that took him down. RIP Kenny. You were an institution and will be missed by many. CrewC

Thought I'd try to start a long-term topic here. Best to keep them short and and sweet. Perhaps we can also toss in quick reviews for great films we see again on DVD/cable, or perhaps ones that we might have forgotten about over the years and suddenly remember. Saw "Sunshine Cleaning" last night. Very charming and thoughtful. Well performed and well told story. Sounded good too, with music adding but not distracting. Best movie I've seen in a while, I think.
