CAT-5e cable for portable applications: (pre-chewed but not inhaled: researched but I have only a little reliable field feedback) To distribute SD video and audio for Video assist purposes this paper is much too complicated but CAT5 is good enough. Quality is secondary to convenience and cost. Go to Pac Radio and get what they have on the floor. You do the sales people a favor, they will make their quotas and get their commissions, forget all this research stuff. Anyway read on you geeks: Cat-5 solutions are for analog component video and audio signals through cheaper lighter weight Cat-5 cables were the best quality is not so important. Cat 5 was originally mad…

Hey Guys, I have been using my 552 on a few jobs recently and listening back to a few files a crazy loud noise, resembling radio interference cuts in for a few seconds and nearly deafens me. It's not there monitoring in real recording time but is there when I listen back. Which is terrible news as I can't rely on it for work now. It's nothing to do with radios and I'm only booming and it still happens.. Anybody had a similar experience? I don't think it's a corrupt SD Card as its happened with two cards now. Could it be A faulty mixer / Wav writer? I'll try and post an example later..

Hello, If using a headphone monitor with a XLR pass-through like the Rolls PM55P, does it matter if I am using cables with a different brand, spec? If not, then in which case using different cables can become a problem? Until now I have only used one cable from source to equipment, unless going through mixers or preamps. Thanks.

Hey all, I need some assistance. My CS3e made a pop-pop-pop sound while out on the field. Situation was. Shot on the beach for a few hours. Then went inside car. We shot some stuff with doors open. Then we closed the doors. Then while we're recording some VO and wild lines, I hear some pop-pop-pop. Fast and intermittent. There were just three I think. I would attach a sample, but I can't find where it is. It was a pretty quiet sound. I'm sure it'd be audible though, once amplified enough. Is it preamp motorboating caused by the shift in humidity? Is it RF? I've often gotten a similar sound with the Schoeps, but I figured it was humidity…

Hello, I've been given some dailies and I see the audio has been recorded at a sample rate of 44,100/32 bit. Now I thought the minimum one should record audio is at 48,000 khz. Thought this was industry standard? With it being recorded at 44,100, is that bad? How big of a quality difference are we looking at vs 48,000? Does the fact that it was recorded at 32bit, make the 44,100 superior to a 48,000 recorded at 16 or 24 bits? Thank you

I have just read this very clear paper on SD website about the 32 bit float resolution, and... I am blown away. 1528 dB of dynamic range, a headroom of 770 dBFS ABOVE our standard 0dBFS !! I understand now why the MixPre series is so popular amongst sound designers. https://www.sounddevices.com/32-bit-float-files-explained/ But now comes to mind an obsessive question: if gear designers like SD and more are capable of creating machines able to record files in 32bit float resolution, why have they not implemented it in their pro range recorders (like the 8 series for SD) ???!? Anyone capable to clear the mystery for me? Thanks Fred PS: I …

Hi all i still dont know this "block stuff" i do however found out that one sound guy from holland who does a lot off big movie's here in holland sold his audio ltd 2040's since i use those myself i wrote him why? did he not like them anymore? turns out he sold them because they where in the 800 Mhz (our nabour country germany uses the 800 for digital tv)range and he now has the same radio's but in the 600 range. he also told me this 600 mhz range would also improve his distance because of how fysics works anybody feels like explaining why 600 mhz is more range then 800 in noob terms cheers martijn wonder wh…

Hi all, Before Nomad officially arrives to Sg, I got myself a Zoom H1 because my Zoom H4n went robust!. Unfortunately for me, the line input doesn't seem to match with my SD 442 XLR - 10 or Line Outputs! The only output that works now with the H1 is the Tapes out on the 442. I know it has something that got to do with the Line Input on the H1 and XLR Output level because I managed to get the XLR outputs on my 302 to work after padding it down to -10 Line. any idea how do I go around solving it for the 442? Put some resistors in the 1/8 - 2 XLR cable that I had made maybe?

I'm going to be installing some video monitors into a rack mount. I'm thinking of placing a 'patch panel' on the other side of the rack. So, I guess I'll need to make up some smaller patch cables that go between the monitor(s), and the patch panel. What is the ohms on the video cables? 50ohms, 75omhs? Does it make a difference? Have you guys made your own BNC to BNC cables? Has anyone done this? Thanks -Richard

Hi all, Pretty new to field sound. Ive recently been having issues with scanning for clear freq's. i have 4 lectrosonic 411a's. maybe im doing it wrong? my way: Turn on all receivers and transmitters. let sit for a couple seconds. then, turn off all transmitters. Scan with all 4 receivers ( blocks 19,20,(2)21's ) at the same time. find the clearest location on each rx and tweak on all matching tx's. everything is fine until i place them on the talent. It seems like i cant be any more than 10 feet away from all 4 without losing full signal. any suggestions would be great. thanks

Greetings to all I bought mini starq uad cables recently and went ahead soldering some mini stereo jacks to XLR cables. I also wanted to make a couple of Switchcraft Mini XLR cables to XLR M and XLR F but the mini star quad cable's diameter was not permitting the cable to make it through the Mini XLR tight Switchcraft sleeve. I remember the first time I switched from a typical XLR cable ( not anything fancy ) to a Mogami mini star quad, I was amazed by what my ears were listening ! To make sure that it was not a psycho acoustic mind trick, I switched back to the previously used cable and then plugged the Mogami again and there it was once more ! The low end con…

I know that there are at least a couple of you that are running either boom recorder or metacorder in your carts. I have a i5 mounted in a drawer that I put together last winter. It's dead silent. I keep a temp monitor up, and now that It's getting warm Im starting to see my cpu temps rising. I am starting to think a little bit more about ventilation, but so far it hasn't been an issue. My average temp stays somewhere around 60-65c. What are your average temps? Do you monitor them? I think my biggest worry is a runaway process. I was just stress testing my cpu and went from 62-81 in about 3 seconds, hovered at 81 for about 10 minutes, and then dr…

Hi Guys, I had a pretty bad sound issue today and as I am still learning the ropes, I wasn't able to figure it out on set. It happened only at one of my two recording sessions today. I could use any input to get to the bottom of this so I don't repeat it ever again. I completed my first field recording session with no problems. Then when helping a couple friends on an unpaid pickup shoot after, all hell broke loose and my audio is largely un-usable. This is what happened: We were recording in a relatively noisy small restaurant. By noisy I mean that there were loud variables we could not turn off (commercial fridges, loud oven going in the nearby kitch…

Can a BWF, with Time Code be treated just like a Wave file without Time Code? Yes it can. But, if a BWF file is created with the wrong Time Code can it still be synced to a picture file in an editing program like FInal Cut? Such as ignoring the Time Code and just syncing manually to the Slate clap. Does the Time Code frame rate effect the actual “clocking” or “speed” of the recording making it impossible to match to a picture recorded with a different Time Code? Can an audio track be re-striped with new Time Code? T h a n k s for y o u r help.

Somebody over on Gearslutz just asked this question, so I thought I'd put up a list of a half-dozen discussions over the last few years on this subject... Some discussions on different techniques for micing dialogue in cars over on the JWSound Group: I think it would be nice to have a Frequently Asked Questions section so that when people ask "which microphone is best for this room?" or "what frequency will work in City X," we could just refer to them with a link. Or better yet, make sure they understand that they should check the FAQ section first rather than post a question that's been answered many times.

Does anyone have a definitive answer for whether or not to connect the cable 'Shield' to the connector 'Case' Standard wiring for 'Balanced' Input/Output 3 Pin XLR is: Pin 1 Shield Pin 2 + Pin 3 - But should you jumper Pin 1 'Shield' to the connector 'Case' It seems that every time I ask someone I get a different answer ranging from "Absolutely yes" to "Definitely not" and even "Yes for location audio but no for studio audio" or "Only at one end" or "No way because that 'Case' lug is for attaching the string in the cable to provide strain relief". Hi everyone, Having some issues that I've never encountered before. Your advice is appreciate! I'm recording onto a Fostex DV824 as primary and 744t as backup. Shooting 35mm. Post wants sound at 24 ND, 48.048 K. The DV824 doesn't record at 48.048, so I have set it to record at 48K, then pulling it up +.1%. Here is the issue: Post is saying the TC displayed on slates and the TC being stamped on metadata are totally off, with no consistency. Not a drift. Sometimes is 30 seconds off, sometimes 90. On set, the slates match my decks all day long. I can guarantee the slates and recorders are sync, but I don't know whats being stamped as metadata on the disc. …
