My sister was in town and came with me to a rental house. She was looking at the labels and names on some item and commented that if she had just heard some of the names without seeing the items, she would assume she was in a hunting lodge. I thought it would be interesting to compile a list somewhat specific to our industry with how we define them. butt plug - xlr plug on transmitter dead cat/ dead wombat - "hairy" cover for a wind blimp wire - refers to lavalier plus transmitter. as in "wire the talent" shotgun - supercardioid microphone MOS - mixer outside smoking, Mit out sound, minus/missing optical stripe, etc. *edit - I did a search after posting and c…

Looking for some advice so I can plug a mic to any line level only input; there are different settings out there.... Using 10kOhm & 100Ohm resistors seems to be one of the most common but I am not shure if it is the right choice for me Any help? Cheers!

I was wondering what the pin assignments are to wire a Countryman EMW for 3 pin wiring to be used with Lectrosonics UM transmitters.

I'm fairly new to Zax wireless and a long time user of Lectros. I have a coordinated list for 14 Lectro channels (praying to god we won't need to use that many) and was to add 2 Zaxcom channels in for booms. I have regularly heard that there is "no intermodulation" with Zaxcom Digital Wireless. Does this mean that the transmitters won't emit any harmonics/overtones that could cause intermodulation? Or are they immune to intermod from other transmitters (meaning that I would still have to coordinate them to not screw with the lectros)? I hope I'm asking this question in a way that makes sense.

A friend of mine is trying to make a .WAV file in FCP with time code for a music video-type application. He sent me a file which played on my MAC but not on my 744T. The 744T sees the file exists on the CF card, including the .wav extension, but says it is an "unrecognizable file format". I called SD, and they are looking into it. Anyone have any suggestions? I planned on using an Ambient UMP-2 with a Lectro SMWB for boom. The setup basically works, but there is a whistling noise when using the SMWB. I guess it is neither the cable nor the power supply as I tested both with an older SMa, and there is no hiss. The noise is present on all 3 of my SMWBs. Did someone here encounter this or knows a workaround?

i'm hoping someone will help me out to understand the difference (if there is a difference) when using an older SD mixpre which has outputs that are impedance balanced, vs. an newer mixpre that has active balanced outputs when using it as a front end to feed signal into ch 3/4 of a 744T. i've got a few other questions: are there differences in quality, level, rf/interference rejection or other? is active-balanced and balanced the same thing? when going through an xlr how does impedance balanced avoid interference by having only one voltage line when compared to balanced that has 2 lines? i've read the paper on the differences (http://www.sounddevi…

Hope there is someone that might be able to help with this... I'm doing sound on a multicam live event shoot this week. The record and edit frame rate is set to 23.976FPS (NDF) and thus I will be recording at 48kHz. There will be a sequence that will require playback and I am intending to send timecode from my audio system to each camera using wireless link. I will probably also try and get a smart slate on set so that there is at least some visual representation of the timecode. Unfortunately my audio playback system doesn't support 23.976ND fps - the lowest timecode rate it will go to is 24fps. This means I can't generate timecode at the right rate for pl…

Gentle sound folk. Am recording iso tracks on 788T at 25ND/48kHz. I have an ACL203 jammed to the 788T sitting on the side of the RED with Genlock and Timecode connected. ACL203 Settings are HD1080P, 25ND, 48kHz - switch settings 3,2,2 RED is set to jamsynch from the ACL203 and to use external genlock (from the ACL203) Initially, on boot, everything is fine. Chainlink symbol for TC Jam and Padlock symbol for genlock. All Good. Then, without warning, after a few hours of operation, the RED loses Genlock. A reboot of the RED solves this problem, but then it appears again. After a while, rebooting the RED is moot and the genlock simply does not…

So you look at the frequency map on lectrosonics and sennheiser... you see there's a TV channel with 15kw tower in your frequency, but it's 60 miles away. Let's say you have a lectro set with one frequency in the middle of that band. Will it be crystal clear or will you only hear that TV station through the receiver? How do you know? Normally I look for channels in a "vacant" block... but what's the cutoff? Is there a hard number here? Can you expect clean audio even if you're in the middle of a weak TV channel? I've worked with 411 many times and rarely had to seek out a new channel for clear audio... Let's say I find a bargain 195d for backup, but the frequenc…

Hi there, I have got a new 788t with cl-8. How can I listen in post fader from my hp? When I use the 788T in post-fader, also if all the cl-8's faders are -∞ I listen the armed tracks. Why? I would like to listen only the tracks that I open from the cl-8. Is it possible?? Thank you

I need some help/advice regarding my Nagra III. I made a DIY power supply from a wall wart (12VDC @ 1A) using a 6 pin DIN and pins 2 and 5 on the accessory connector. Positive is earth/ground. Works almost perfect except for rewind. I've read the manual and other relevant posts here and elsewhere but can't figure this out. Again, playback, record, line in/out and the XLR all work as they should. I have the function selector switch set to EXT and when I turn it to either playback option and turn the tape transport control knob to the 'ON' position it plays no issue. However when I turn the On/Off knob to the left to disengag…

I am hiring two Lectrosonics SMa transmitters with a SRa (?) Receiver. I tested everything out (good thing because of the first receiver output 2 failed). But now I test it again in a quiet invironment, and one of the two SMa's is giving a lot of noise. Also, everytime a -10 or -20 LED blinks a pop sound is audible. Is this device broken? I tried: Changing level, Frequency, Rolloff, replacing battery, replacing microphone, replacing antenna, switch mixer input, Check compatibility (can only switch between hbr and ifb). Help! Argh! I can't contact the company bacouse it's evening now here (Netherlands).

I've worked with Deva 2 for so long... I am used to getting 8 "track hours" out of 2G partitions... At 48K/24bit I can count on 1tk = 8hrs on a 2G block, 2tk = 4hrs on a 2G block, 4tks = 2hrs on a 2G block ....... when it comes down to 2G partitions... I've got a 2hr performance recording coming up, and the client wants 16 tracks plus timecode.... I am looking for the storage capacity he'll / we'll need to be ready for.... I plan on using BoomRecorder here.... For BoomRecorder users, has the formula been roughly the the same ? (1 tk for 8 hrs = 2g) Therefore, 17 tks at 8 hrs would require 34G ..... Since I'm only recording for 2hrs (8/4 = 2, thus…

Hey, Is it possible to wire an adaptor (ta5 to waterproof MM) to work for both positive and negative bias trams? I feel like the stock mm adaptors are wired to handle both but I'm not sure how that would be wired - Is there an extra jumper somewhere on the ta5M side of the adaptor? Specifically I'm trying to figure out what the wiring should be for that lectro cable that works with both +/-bias trams and a redband cos-11.. The current cable I have doesn't work at all with the -bias tram and creates some grounding issues with the cos-11 when you touch the metal casing of the MM thanks!

Hoping someone can help me with this. I'm looking at changing the settings on the limiter out of my Audio Developments Board. The manual mentioned two things about setting the limiter (outside of attack and release times) - "Biasing and Threshold." The term Biasing is not something I understand in this context. The manual reads like this: "Biasing and threshold are adjusted as follows: VR1 biases the limiter circuit to the point of correct operation and VR2 sets the threshold." Is Biasing at all related to "make up gain" that is offered on many compressors? Thanks for any knowledge, -Greg-

Hi everyone. I'm on a shoot in India and my fusion is acting up. It won't let me mirror to the mirror card nor is it letting me mount my ext LaCie anymore. It mounted fine the first two days then I switched cards and it stopped mounting. Replace the card with the first card and still nothing. Any ideas or tips? TIA

I am i correct in thinking that recordings made with the latest machines ( SD , Deva , Cantar , PD606 ) are supposed to be absolutely quiet , upon playback , ie. no noise what so ever from the media , even with recordings of very low level sounds ? 1/4 inch tape has a little hiss as I remember . Does anyone know if I can charge a battery (NP-1 or 7.2V DV batt) while it is still connected to my equipment? Or would I have to disconnect the gear from the battery to protect it? My batteries are buried in my ENG bag and I was thinking it would be nice to just plug the battery in to a charger instead of having to dig it out. Any thoughts?
