Have an old 302 mixer. Works fine, but the LED ribbon is either broken or unseated. I could most likely buy a part from Sounddevices or just look up the part number and find it from an electronics supplier. However, I cannot get to the actual ribbon. It's sandwiched between the two boards. I took the rubber knobs off of the pots. Seems like the nuts are holding it together from the front side. Any idea as to any things I need to do to disassemble the unit enough to get to the inside? Many thanks.

Hi, I have a Coles 4104 that sounds good, but the noise of the preamp is very noticeable when I turn it up to the level needed. Ive tried 3 different preamps with similar results. Its the same noise of a preamp that is heard when turning up the gain without a mic loading it. When I connect the microphone, the noise is the exact same, but combined with the microphones signal. Searching online I don't see any mention of this issue. Could anyone who has used this microphone describe their experience? I've used other, much cheaper, ribbon microphones and never noticed this level of noise. Thanks, Rodrigo

Again, mad physicist exploring TC world here. 😁 Is HDMI timecode LTC and is it using Consumer Electronics Control (CEC) pin bus? Or maybe Pin 17? I understand timecode over HDMI is a hack introduced by Atomos almost ten years ago and then adopted by many manufacturers but can't find any technical details about it... any pointer? [EDIT: or is it SONY with the FS100? as discussed here on jwsd] Thanks in advance... Fun fact: looking around I learned Atomos under CEO J. Young was a shitty place to work at. PS: I'm referring to pin 17 as "Utility/HEAC+" signal, defined in HDMI 1.4+ version. This signal moves from pin …

My trusty (about 15 year old) 416 went scratchy today, intermittently crackling with multiple cables. I had opened it once before so I was curious to take a look and found that one of the two resistors on the input stage had badly corroded (see pic). Sharing this for others, perhaps for my own memory, and to take the comments of those wiser than me: fire away. Notes on opening: -Remove the C-clip from inside the XLR jack with a pair of needle nose tweezers or tiny screwdrivers, while this actually wasn't necessary in this case it's worth noting. -Turn the flathead set screw on the exterior and remove it -Remove the top outer case, the XLR jack assembly…

Hello, I am trying to understand how are RF power measurements made, how to check that a transmitter has the right RF power output, how to test RF antenna cables insertion loss, etc... I got myself a little gadget that is supposed to measure RF power outputs in dBm and mW. But it is a cheap stuff and I am getting weird results, like higher measure when adding cables... Before I dismiss it completely, I realised I need to actually understand what is it I am supposed to get. So, for those of you RF insiders, what is the correlation between the rate of a transmitter power and what is measurable at the antenna output? in other words, if I have a transmit…

I have read references from various sources referring to a Nagra III parts list. One that was included with the machine at one time. Does anyone know where / if such a list exists? I have found the American written owners manual, the instructions manuals 1963&1967, and the German service manual, which i am in the process of translating to English. I don’t think this parts list was a complete list with exploded views, but rather a text list of items such as pinch roller and belts. I own two N3s and wish to restore them as much as possible. It looks like no one is servicing units anymore, and i have a desire to create a manual closer to a “proper” one. I see various par…

I have recently upgraded my A10-RX to a new A20-RX. The idea is to move from the crowded UHF band to the 1.3 GHz band and to reduce the lenght of the antenna on the A20-mini transmitters. As I was searching technical informations about the effects of obstacles, and especially human body, on the transmission at higher frequencies, I found this very interesting study: https://www.bakom.admin.ch/bakom/en/homepage/frequencies-and-antennas/facts-and-figures/the-effect-of-the-human-body-on-wireless-microphone-transmission.html If I understand well, if the body is an absorber in the UHF band, it acts more like a reflector at higher frequencies. …

Hello All, Need some assistance if you can. I've got the SD633 and I'm trying to record Wav Poly on CF and MP3 on the SD card. I've updated to V4.61. The mixer is not allowing me to record MP3's. I've tried new cards of various sizes and I'm not recording in F mode. I've formatted the cards and I'm at 48K also. Is anyone else experiencing this? Any solutions would be helpful. Thanks, Russ

It's a longer story than needs to post here, but bottom line is : I need to fabricate a cable that brings battery power into the USB-C power port on this new mixer. Q : does anyone know the acceptable range of DC input voltages? The only power arrangement I can fabricate here, while waiting on shipments, will put aprox 14.4 volts into the port, way higher than the 5 V DC that comes with the wall power supply. (as everyone probably knows, the mixer/recorder will give aprox 60 mins run time with the standard 4xAA power module). Standing by with cable cutters and soldering iron! Grant.

Has anyone determined which wireless frequencies are most/least likely to suffer from occupancy sensor interference? The Leviton sensors operate at 5.8 GHz but I have run into what sounds like intermodulation problems in UHF.

I have just read this very clear paper on SD website about the 32 bit float resolution, and... I am blown away. 1528 dB of dynamic range, a headroom of 770 dBFS ABOVE our standard 0dBFS !! I understand now why the MixPre series is so popular amongst sound designers. https://www.sounddevices.com/32-bit-float-files-explained/ But now comes to mind an obsessive question: if gear designers like SD and more are capable of creating machines able to record files in 32bit float resolution, why have they not implemented it in their pro range recorders (like the 8 series for SD) ???!? Anyone capable to clear the mystery for me? Thanks Fred PS: I …

Hi , I've found this website and start read as much as I can!! There are professional users here and you help is really precious. I bought a Nagra 3 recently ( I was looking for it from many years..). It is nearly perfect for what concern the body, it looks like new, this is incredible for a 60 years old piece... and inside seems to be never repaired. All the Red paint is in place. New batteries are now inside. The motor run as it should! 4 speeds Rewind is ok, fast forward too. It plays but the sound is not so loud from the central speaker ... I tried to record putting a bass…

Well, the title says it all. I'll need some XLR cable length that should also serve on SuperCMITs. Maybe 30m max, so it's probably not very relevant, but I thought, I'd ask.

I’m recording a college marching band inside an arena. Should I be worried that it will over power my Scheops CMU6 with MK4 cardiold capsule? Would a dynamic mic work better? I’m concerned about echo too. I’m also wondering if a sanken lav on a drummer would get me crisp drums. Any suggestions appreciated.

Hey All, Apologies if this has been covered elsewhere, I could only find a couple posts and they seemed about 15 years old! I've been recording in 48k 16bit as standard for film/tv stuff, but I'm just wondering if this is still the industry standard, or if I should be recording at 24bit? I'm not asking which is technically 'better', as we all know 24bit is the winner, I'm asking what bit depth do you record in? And what is the expected bit depth these days? Thank you all you lovely people!

one of my 4.2's was running about 20ips , irrespective of speed switch. no , it was not in f fwd.fault traced to poor gold split connections to the speed control board at rear.. unsrew the 2 screws securing the 2 green plugs and gently, with a jewellers screwdriver, prise each split gold pin , slightly wider, to ensure a better tight fit. this cured the problem.

Hi, so, lavs (and microdot adaptors) with a 3.5mm locking connector are usually specified for Sony (UWP-, UTX series) or Sennheiser G2, G3, G4. The latter being widely used by other manufacturers, e.g. Deity, Tentacle and lots more When I look for line in cables, they are sometimes advertised as compatible for both worlds. What are the differences in these inputs? I have a show coming up, where I'd like to feed some UTX-B3 with either my Sennheiser terminated lavs or the HP output of my Track Es (non US).

Hello, I've searched this website but haven't found a solution to my issue. Sending 23.98 fps LTC timecode to a Pulse from SD633. The Pulse is connected to the AtomosX via RF signal. As you can see in the photos, all the units are synced perfectly. When I sync the video and audio in post it's off by 4 frames consistently throughout. I was wondering if there was a solution to this where it could be perfectly in sync when matched in post. Thanks!

Hello, I'm new here and to be honest I don't know exactly where my topic belongs. I have had a Nagra III for 3 years (was my dream to have one). Now a week ago the belts started to give problems and I ordered new ones which will arrive next week. At the same time another error has crept in that I just can't find. When I record via microphone, the recording is crystal clear, but when I record via the two line inputs, the recording is simply muffled. Well, let's make it short: I'm looking for a service manual that says how to tune the Nagra (to a specific band for example LPR35 or LPR90). And a manual that says ho…

I planned on using an Ambient UMP-2 with a Lectro SMWB for boom. The setup basically works, but there is a whistling noise when using the SMWB. I guess it is neither the cable nor the power supply as I tested both with an older SMa, and there is no hiss. The noise is present on all 3 of my SMWBs. Did someone here encounter this or knows a workaround?

I've bought what is marketed as pair of single lyre (19/25) (with modular adaptor & screws) in the 3 shore/stiffness variants (62/72/82) to use them in my Cyclone or an INV-7. For simplicity I'll only refer to 62 Shore variant here. Mine has product code 042255. There is a similar product, with the code 042250 marketed as pair of single lyre (19/25) (with premodular adaptor & screws). Rycote also offers a Cyclone Pair of Universal Lyre with the product code 042270. The lyres that came with my Cyclone and my INV-7 look exactly the same as those I just ordered (just without the adaptor). What are the differences between modular and pr…

I need some help/advice regarding my Nagra III. I made a DIY power supply from a wall wart (12VDC @ 1A) using a 6 pin DIN and pins 2 and 5 on the accessory connector. Positive is earth/ground. Works almost perfect except for rewind. I've read the manual and other relevant posts here and elsewhere but can't figure this out. Again, playback, record, line in/out and the XLR all work as they should. I have the function selector switch set to EXT and when I turn it to either playback option and turn the tape transport control knob to the 'ON' position it plays no issue. However when I turn the On/Off knob to the left to disengag…
