The left channel is interrupted once for 250 ms every 4 seconds. 250 ms later the right channel has two interruptions of 250 ms spaced by 250 ms. Graham's Line Ident Tone System (GLITS) is a test signal for stereo systems devised by BBC TV Sound Supervisor and Fellow of the IBS Graham Haines in the mid 1980s. It comprises a 1 kHz tone at 0 dBu (- 18 dBFS) on both channels, with interruptions which identify the channels. This arrangement has an advantage over the EBU stereo ident tone in that each channel is explicitly identified as belonging to a stereo pair. The EBU Technical Document Multichannel Audio Line-up Tone (Tech 3304) defines stereo lineup tone has havi…

Hi, My general understanding of this phenomenon is that mics equally spaced apart in relation to a sound source, if mixed together, result in a degraded audio signal. For example, here is Audio-Technica's explanation: http://www.audio-technica.com/cms/site/f54c2e7c578b36f7/index.html My questions: 1. If the two mics consist of a lav (1' from actor's mouth) and a directional mic on a boom that moves to 1' (very close miking) would phase cancellation occur? I am assuming it would... 2. If one iso'd such mics, would they also produce cancellation if later mixed or layered in relation to each other? Thanks in advance, Mike

I planned on using an Ambient UMP-2 with a Lectro SMWB for boom. The setup basically works, but there is a whistling noise when using the SMWB. I guess it is neither the cable nor the power supply as I tested both with an older SMa, and there is no hiss. The noise is present on all 3 of my SMWBs. Did someone here encounter this or knows a workaround?

Following the DTV transition, there will be some changes as to where in the spectrum the TV stations will call home. In my area (Indianapolis), for instance, a couple of stations will transition their DTV frequency back to where the analog one was. In other cases, stations are moving into slots formerly occupied by yet a different station. To help sort out how the changes will affect your favorite freqs, here are the FCC's "Coverage Maps for All Designated Market Areas" as they are projected to be after the switch to full DTV is made: http://www.fcc.gov/dtv/markets/ (Thanks to Matt Mayer for posting a link, on RAMPS, leading to this link.) I don't recall see…

I recently corrupted a drive and in the long search for an easy way to play/save the recovered headerless wav files, I found this programme for a mac. http://tmkk.pv.land.to/xld/index_e.html Just import as a raw file, set the destination folder and away you go! Way easier and quicker then other methods I found... Regards, Grant.

Hi everyone, Having some issues that I've never encountered before. Your advice is appreciate! I'm recording onto a Fostex DV824 as primary and 744t as backup. Shooting 35mm. Post wants sound at 24 ND, 48.048 K. The DV824 doesn't record at 48.048, so I have set it to record at 48K, then pulling it up +.1%. Here is the issue: Post is saying the TC displayed on slates and the TC being stamped on metadata are totally off, with no consistency. Not a drift. Sometimes is 30 seconds off, sometimes 90. On set, the slates match my decks all day long. I can guarantee the slates and recorders are sync, but I don't know whats being stamped as metadata on the disc. …

Hey, Is it possible to wire an adaptor (ta5 to waterproof MM) to work for both positive and negative bias trams? I feel like the stock mm adaptors are wired to handle both but I'm not sure how that would be wired - Is there an extra jumper somewhere on the ta5M side of the adaptor? Specifically I'm trying to figure out what the wiring should be for that lectro cable that works with both +/-bias trams and a redband cos-11.. The current cable I have doesn't work at all with the -bias tram and creates some grounding issues with the cos-11 when you touch the metal casing of the MM thanks!

Hello all, I have got a question specifically for Zaxcom NeverClip users. In transmitters how well does this really work? I mean really, honestly. I am not evaluating different system, asking which one should I get. I have an unusual shoot coming up, where there will be an attack dog on set almost all the time. This can erupt barking without any warning and get very loud from one moment to the next. Even if I can bring down the gain on my isos just in time, I won't be able to change the transmitters settings in time - even with Zaxnet. Thus hitting the limiter/compressor. If I set tx gain really low all the time, I'll lose S/N on quieter …

I will be recording a small aircraft landing today, and i wouldnt want to trash my mics. The mics i have available are mkh 50, mkh 416, audix tr40, tram tr50 lavs, and a shure sm57. Should i go with the dynamic 57 or is a small airplane not loud enough to damage my mics? I know the way to go is to measure how loud it is and then go with a mic accordingly, but im pretty sure we will only get one shot at it. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!

Whilst perusing the Phonak web site I tried this simple hearing test There is no real scoring, just advice as to whether you may need to see a loss specialist. I tested with the MacBook Pro open speakers set to a couple of clicks below mid-volume. I believe I heard all the words except one– I was in my kitchen and the refrigerator compressor clicked on precisely when one was spoken. http://www.phonak.com/us/b2c/en/hearing/recognizing_hearingloss/hearingtest.html

Forgive me if this has already been covered, but could not find in a search. I'm looking to contruct a female xlr > 6 pin lemo for micron cable. Does anybody know how the hot/cold/shield from the starquad xlr female cable terminates onto the 6 pin lemo (for micron-style connectors). I solder xlr cables very frequently but haven't tried soldering lemo connectors before (I gather they can be very fidgety!) but fancy having a go in some down-time. Any tips much appreciated!

I’m not to crash hot on the whole balance, unbalanced, line and mic level thing. I’m sure I have balanced/unbalanced sorted but not how it all combines with line & mic levels and wiring. Here’s what I need to do. I have a 442 and a Tascam Dr-60. I want to be able to record the 4 direct outputs to the Tascam which has 2 x XLR inputs and a 3.5mm jack for channels 3&4. So the variety of input types has sticked me up a bit. The 2 x XLR inputs can be selected between line or mic. The 3.5mm mini jack is/can only be unbalanced line level, correct? So to get everything matching as best as possible I’ll need to change the 442 settings so that the outputs are …

The other day I was rigging a bag for a job and noticed something odd I wanted to share with you. In the bag: 788t, 3x Sennie EK100G2 with DC-2 battery eliminators on a Hawkwoods VLR-SQN4S. The 788t was connected to the VLRs fixed cable. One of the Sennies showed one bar of reception, although all TX were off, and my RF-Explorer one meter away on the table showed an empty spectrum. I took the RF-Explorer in the bag, and the noise foor was around 9db higher, with a slight sawtooth pattern. I plugged the 788t off the Hawkwood power source and the noisefloor went down. I powered the 788t from the last Hirose connector, but the noise went up again. I suspected some correl…

Hey guys, I'm totally stumped. I got the Remote Audio straight replacement cable since my cans were a bit old and one of the ears had gone out. I'm not the world's best solderer but here's what's now happening. Left channel goes to Left ear (as planned). Left AND Right channels go to Right ear instead of Right channel only. I can't figure out why the Left channel is getting to the right ear, full and clear. I tested with a couple different playback devices using youtube stereo test videos. I also put a stereo song in a DAW. Panned full L, I hear L in both ears, Panned full R, I hear R in Right ear, nothing in L ear. Panned center, I think I'm hearing L…

Hi guys, I'm a long time viewer of the site but haven't posted anything until now. Most of the time any questions I have can be answered by a scan through this site but I want to make sure i'm on the right track with this! I may be doing some work in Taiwan come November and i'm looking at frequencies over there. I have only previously worked in Europe. So far I have only found this - http://www.ncc.gov.tw/english/files/07060/92_070605_1.pdf Am I right in thinking I can use some frequencies of Channel 69 radio mics over there? All my equipment is currently CH38. It also seems I am limited to very low power transmitters- does anyone have any experience with th…

Ill only really be using 2 or 3 max at any time.. Also do i need to acquire a license? Any help is appreciated, Gray

Hi, Recently on a shoot the time code on my SD 633 kept resetting to 0.00 every time the machine was powered off. Even though i had entered the time of day and jammed the camera. Not sure why as usually it holds it for the day. Anybody know what might be causing this? Or rather how I guarantee it stays..
