Just found out that PT9 and PT10 won't work past 10.8.5 So you have to have PT11 minimum to work in 10.10.3. It's always something with Avid... Jeff

I love to see both these stories in the financial news today. I know the general consensus amongst most people is that market cap and profitability are intrinsically good --- what a company decides to do with their wealth is what is really important. Apple Inc. has become the first U.S. company to close with a market cap of more than $700 billion, nearly doubling the market cap of its closest rival, Exxon Mobil. Apple’s share price closed nearly 2 points up at $122.02 with a market cap of $710.72 billion on the NASDAQ exchange. At more than $700 billion, Apple is twice as valuable as Microsoft ($349.6 billion); Exxon closed with a market cap of $384.32 billion. …

Pure speculation at this point and only one person's prediction --- still quite intriguing Apple Inc. To Buy Tesla For $75 Billion In 18 Months: Calacanis Calacanis’ prediction is based on Apple’s interest in building cars and Tim Cook’s obsession with clean energy Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) rarely makes big-ticket acquisitions. Its biggest ever purchase was the $3 billion deal for Beats Electronics. But angel investor and entrepreneur Jason Calacanis predicts that the Cupertino company would pay a staggering $75 billion to buy Tesla in the next 18 months. Rumors have been doing rounds for more than a year that Apple was interested in buying Tesla. LINK t…

Fortune's Philip Elmer-DeWitt contacted Walter Isaacson and got some more details on Steve Jobs' biography that is due on November 21st. The above cover is described by Isaacson: "The cover," writes Isaacson in private e-mail, "is the Albert Watson portrait taken for Fortune in 2009. The back is a Norman Seeff portrait of him in the lotus position holding the original Macintosh, which ran in Rolling Stone in January 1984. The title font is Helvetica. It will look as you see it, with no words on the back cover." Isaacson also clarified to Elmer-DeWitt the moving forward of the publication date was not due to any health concerns or decline. The book was mostly com…

Quicken 2015: Close, But Not Yet Acceptable ------------------------------------------- by Glenn Fleishman: <glenn@glennf.com>, @glennf article link: <http://tidbits.com/e/15049> 25 comments What I wanted out of Quicken 2015 for Mac wasn’t improvement so much as a path forward: I wanted to know that when OS X 10.10 Yosemite shipped, I wouldn’t be waiting for Intuit to issue yet another extension on life for Quicken 2007. I pictured myself setting up (as I had before) a virtual machine running an older version of Mac OS X just to keep Quicken 2007 alive. Horrors. <http://www.quicken.com/mac> I have tried nearly every Qu…

In a manner befitting the popular tech company, the following invitations were sent out today by Apple for a special event this upcoming September 9th: They are expected to announce their new line of iPhones (a 4.7" and possibly a 5.5" iPhone), as well as their first product in the wearable technology market, popularly referred to by the crowds as the "iWatch". Heads up regarding iOS-8 (available Wednesday) and the new iCloud Drive Don’t pull the trigger on upgrading to iCloud Drive just yet Macworld online - Caitlin McGarry If you’re upgrading to iOS 8 on Wednesday, you must resist the urge to upgrade to iCloud Drive if you want to continue to sync your phone to your Mac. Why? Well, iCloud Drive only works with iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite. And you all know which OS we’re still waiting on. Until Yosemite drops, upgrading to iCloud Drive will keep you from syncing devices running iOS 8 and devices running OS X Mavericks. Good news: After you install iOS 8, Apple will ask you if you want to upgrade to iCloud Drive. Tap…

Heads up for anyone who has received this sort of thing in their email. The bad grammar and non-Apple links should be enough for people to realize this is a phishing scam. Do not click on any of the links or risk having personal information, IDs and passwords stolen.

I was looking around the You Tube and found one of my favorite old programs. Connections with James Burke. In the below linked episode he outlines a personal assistant on his MAC laptop while in India and it bears an uncanny resemblance to Siri or Google Plus. This show was produced in 1997 almost a decade before the iPhone was announced. So let's hope Apple didn't notice this video when they were filing patent applications for Siri. The pertinent part starts about 2 minutes in. And if you haven't seen the rest of the series it is a fascinating look at the various connections between historical events and scientific discovery. It had 3 series all of them amazi…

I have two 13" MBPs, one from 2010 and one from mid 2012, if I upgrade the new one to 16gb, can I put my 2x4gb DRAM modules in the old one? The specs are very similar, except for the voltage.

I was in one of my local Radio Shack stores today (a "re-designed" one --- they've closed the others) and I saw the rather extensive and new display for Beats headphones, speakers and accessories. There were about 8 different styles you could try on and listen to program material ("music", maybe?) --- the interesting thing was, all the headphones were displayed on round mirrors, sort of like how you look at and shop for sunglasses. So, I guess a lot more goes into the buying decision than how do they sound. How do I look? Radio Shack display - Beats

After all the security issues that have been dancing around the news of late I started to look into software that manages passwords. There's just no real way for me to remember passwords that are truly secure and varied so I wanted to see what folks were using. I'd love to have an integration of the many computers, tablets and phones that we all use and to see if there's a fairly seamless yet secure piece of software out there. 1 Password looks good according to CNET but I thought I'd see if anyone here was using something that they liked. https://agilebits.com/onepassword/mac Thanks, Scott

-excerpted from Macworld site Remembering eWorld, Apple's forgotten online service Benj Edwards @benjedwards Jun 9, 2014 3:44 AMe-mailprint Just before the Internet’s meteoric rise in the public consciousness, large centralized dial-up services like America Online, Prodigy, and CompuServe dominated the online landscape. In this competitive climate 20 years ago, Apple introduced eWorld, a subscription-based information service available to Mac and Newton users. Despite its closure in 1996, eWorld remains notable for its city-based interface metaphor and as a symbol of Apple’s overreach in the era. Users accessed eWorld through custom client software written by…

I just find this really funny --- Apple designs this amazing MacPro, new form factor (which people either love or hate whether they have had experience with it personally or not) and this company comes up with a way to rack mount it and add some expansion. Sonnet Announces Mac Pro 4U Rackmount Enclosure and Expansion Chassis Wednesday March 26, 2014 5:01 pm PDT by Jordan Golson Sonnet has announced a 4U rackmount enclosure and expansion chassis for the new Mac Pro, allowing users to horizontally mount their Mac Pro in a standard data center rack with PCIe expansion capabilities. The xMac Pro Server includes three PCIe single-width expansion slots, with room for o…

Macintosh 128K (1984) As clunky and expensive as it was, the original Mac was the first mass-market personal computer to feature a graphical user interface (GUI) and mouse. Today, we expect any electronic device from TVs to ATMs to come with a graphical user interface. And thanks to the GUI, PCs, laptops, smartphones, and tablets were able to evolve into devices for the everyday consumer. The Mac was the one product that started it all.

There is a major security flaw in the software for Apple phones, the company announced Friday night. If you've logged onto WiFi from a coffee shop, hotel, airport or other public space, you could be at risk. "At this early stage, the vulnerability has been confirmed in iOS versions 6.1.5, 7.0.4, and 7.0.5, and OS X 10.9.0 and 10.9.1, meaning it has silently exposed the sensitive communications of millions of people for weeks or months," reported Arts Technica. For the time being, Mac users should not log in through insecure or public networks. http://www.cbsnews.com/news/apple-iphone-and-mac-users-need-to-update-security-asap/ The recently-announced flaw in…

-from MacRumors site: Today marks the seventh anniversary of the introduction of the iPhone, a presentation that took place as part of the keynote of Macworld Expo 2007 in San Francisco. While the device would not launch until over six months later, that presentation offered the public the first glimpse of what Steve Jobs introduced as three devices in one: a touchscreen iPod, a phone, and an Internet communicator. "Today, we're introducing three revolutionary products. The first one is a widescreen iPod with touch controls. The second is a revolutionary mobile phone. And the third is a breakthrough Internet communications device. So, three things: a widescreen iP…
