After all the complaining about the new connector on the iPhone 5, there have been some significant revelations about this connector. These explanations go far beyond the remarks about how Apple used the new connector just to keep us buying new stuff and how awful it is that Apple has pissed off all the accessory companies. It looks to be a truly "smart" cable with active adaptive components that configure its use. Apple's Lightning Connector Uses Adaptive Technology to Dynamically Assign Pin Functions With Apple's new Lightning connector on the iPhone 5 dropping to just eight contact pins from the 30 pins seen in the original dock connector and gaining t…

So, I have been using Apple products since 1998, when I bought a G3 to run Cubase VST for music production. Love most of their stuff in general. Now, iOS 6. (more like pOS 6) I did the update last night and really wish I could go back to the previous version. Why? - The Maps App sucks. No street view, stuff missing/wrong etc. - Crashing !!! Almost never had this happen to my iPhone before. Simple things, such as moving an app to a different place on the dashboard restarts the phone (wtf!?!) -Passbook - maybe I'm missing something, but the only thing that happens when I open this app is nothing. The one and only button that says "App Store" opens A…

I am curious if anyone knows what console is being used for this Apple presentation? It's a small picture I realize but maybe somebody can identify it. I am always impressed with the presentation quality of all these Apple Events ... though I do miss Steve Jobs who was the master showman.

Anyone tried to go to the movie-slate website lately? Seems to be down. I have the app already and am a happy user but I wanted to read up on the details on it's integration with the Time Code Buddy system. I know they work together but the Time Code Buddy website doesn't go into specific detail. -D

I'm wirelessly running a Brother MFC-J435 all in one printer on my iMac (OS 10.5.. I can print just fine, but I can't access any of the other functions on my computer (scanning, fax etc) because the Control Center (interface between the printer and the computer) won't load up. It's been this way since I got it. Just haven't needed the other functions till now. I reloaded the included software and got the latest firmware installed as well. I click on the Control Center icon and it just sits there. Tried all the other ways of opening as well. All the other included software opens just fine. Any thoughts? Bernie

Check out this astounding summary of a guy's small-claims court case against Apple for failures in his MacBook Pro and Apple's response to his problem. "Rex earlier this week published a lengthy blog post outlining his experience facing off against two Apple lawyers last week and winning an unspecified sum sufficient to purchase a new computer." Mac Rumors summary: http://www.macrumors.com/2012/04/19/blogger-victorious-over-apple-in-small-claims-case-on-nvidia-gpu-failures/ Seattle Rex's long (but well-written) blog post: http://www.seattlerex.com/seattle-rex-vs-apple-the-verdict-is-in/ If Rex has accurately reported what happened... man... I've been on Verizon for years, so an iPhone wasn't an option till recently. Now that it is... the only holdup I have is navigation. Right now I have a DroidX, and the built-in google turn by turn nav is pretty great. I do a lot of jobs where I am in a new location every day. I can enter the job in iCal, or in Google calendar, and it will sync with my phone. When in my car I drop my phone in the car mount, click the entry in the calendar and the address is a link to launch google maps directions, with one more click and I am getting turn by turn navigation (spoken "turn right on Lincoln Drive in 300 yards"). I have not powered up my Garmin since I got my Droid X in Summer…

Pen for iPad. Just found this on the app store today. I find myself with no time to type sound reports during a shoot. This looks handy to me for just making quick notes on the fly and later transfer to Sound Reporter. I also like that I can use a big fat red marker to tell someone on set something without making a sound or trying to use hand signals to convey a simple message. To me with the eraser and pen and type tools it works like a Etch a Sketch with pages. Will let you know how it works. Tom Maloney

Hi, I just got myself a used Ipod touch, mainly for CL-WIFI. I made myself a cable like the iTC-INX, just to find out, that the mic input contact on the Ipods TRRS sleeve is loose. Could I just input a TC signal line level via the dock connector to run Ambient's TC App?

Developer's preview of Mountain Lion has been released and looks to have a number of really useful features incorporated, most seeming to further integrate with iCloud. As always, Apple is able to provide a level of integration along with ease of use that no other tech company can accomplish because Apple controls both the hardware and software and provides integrated Cloud functions on their own servers. - excerpted: Apple today released a developer preview of OS X Mountain Lion, the ninth major release of the world's most advanced operating system, which brings popular apps and features from iPad to the Mac and accelerates the pace of OS X innovation. Mount…

If you enjoy listening to a good story, and I think you do, give a listen to the latest episode of "This American Life." Its a superb storytelling performance by Mike Daisey as he visits the Apple factory in China. Also as interesting is Mike's voice and nuanced delivery.

Mary Gruszka / 12.21.2011 12:00AM Audio Measurement Apps—Things to Be Aware Of With the growing number of audio measurement apps for smart devices becoming available, and for fairly reasonable prices, why should you keep your "old" test gear or consider buying new? Even though apps offer amazing capabilities already, and are getting better with regular updates and improvements, it's still early days yet for apps to replace other test gear. TESTING THE TEST GEAR With any test device, it's important to test the test equipment. Compare measurements obtained with apps with those tak…

I have LION on the main computer now and all is well except for one very odd thing that really threw me. After installing LION, the Library folder that was always in the User's Home folder has moved out. It is now on the boot drive, the main hard drive, not in the Home folder. I am wondering if it has something to do with the way all my computers are set up. I often go into the Library folder, Application Support folder, etc., and now I have to look somewhere else. The Library folder used to be one of the default folders, like Music, Sites, Documents, Public, etc. Anyone else see this?

How the iPod and Other Audio Devices Are Destroying Your Ears By Sara J. Martinez Damage from music is not always permanent, but some audiologists have seen mp3-inflicted issues so strong that hearing aids were needed Portable music players may be contributing to permanent hearing loss among many casual listeners, gradually leading to the inability to discern speech. An iPod's maximum volume is more than 10 times as loud as the recommended listening setting, audiologists say, and the sensory damage caused by prolonged listening is irreversible. Since the iPod was introduced in 2001, hearing loss has been an obvious problem among young patients of Brian Fli…

OK, so I know I read somewhere that there is a difference, but I don't remember what it is. I just put a USB plug into my soundcart and it can charge most things with a USB connection, except my Iphone. What's different about the Iphone USB connection ? Anyone know if it would be the same with the Iphone 4S ?
