Solar Charger For iPhone Swiftly Sucks Up The SunThe very concept of keeping an iPhone fully charged? Laughable. But using the sun as a power source? That's positively preposterous. Apparently crazy is on the menu over at Dexim HQ. Their new solar-powered P-Flip promises to juice an iPhone's talk time up to eight hours. The rigging basically looks like a bulky black and camouflage case. You slide the iPhone in (there's a version for BlackBerry schlepers too) and the panels soak up sunlight and transfer it over to the phone's power-hungry battery. While the P-Flip manual claims a full solar charge takes 10-12 hours, Dexim's website says 15 hours. Whatevah! In our testin…

My dear friend Tom Holman has been hired by Apple to head up all things AUDIO for the company. You can read one of the articles: HERE Notice as well that this is a link to one of the experimental sites I have been working on to possibly replace this site. The post to the forum on that site demonstrates one of the things I like about it: you can paste a web page directly into the message composition area and it preserves the whole page with links and everything (something not possible with this SMF forum).

Insight into Steve Jobs' Product-Centric Approach 1985 Interview in Newsweek Magazine Sunday January 23, 2011 01:08 AM EST Written by Arnold Kim for Mac Rumors Early last week, Steve Jobs announced that he was once again taking a medical leave of absence from Apple. The news has been met with understandable concern about his future at the company, and resulted in many a "look back" at Apple over the years. One particularly insightful article is this Newsweek article interviewing Steve Jobs back in 1985 shortly after his ousting from Apple. It's interesting to see how his views and attitudes about product design hasn't changed much in 25 years. Steve Jobs co-found…

Hi, I just got myself a used Ipod touch, mainly for CL-WIFI. I made myself a cable like the iTC-INX, just to find out, that the mic input contact on the Ipods TRRS sleeve is loose. Could I just input a TC signal line level via the dock connector to run Ambient's TC App?

Interesting brief article (with links) highlighting some history and present accounts of the state of patents, featuring Apple, Google and others. An Inside Look at Apple's Role in the Patent Industry Monday October 8, 2012 10:53 am PDT by Eric Slivka In the seventh installment of its "iEconomy" series focused on Apple, The New York Times takes a look at patents, examining how and why Apple has wielded them in what seems to be a never-ending series of lawsuits between the company and its competitors. The seven-page article offers an interesting glimpse into the patent process and traces Apple's aggressive efforts to a $100 million settlement paid b…

Heads up regarding iOS-8 (available Wednesday) and the new iCloud Drive Don’t pull the trigger on upgrading to iCloud Drive just yet Macworld online - Caitlin McGarry If you’re upgrading to iOS 8 on Wednesday, you must resist the urge to upgrade to iCloud Drive if you want to continue to sync your phone to your Mac. Why? Well, iCloud Drive only works with iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite. And you all know which OS we’re still waiting on. Until Yosemite drops, upgrading to iCloud Drive will keep you from syncing devices running iOS 8 and devices running OS X Mavericks. Good news: After you install iOS 8, Apple will ask you if you want to upgrade to iCloud Drive. Tap…

If you enjoy listening to a good story, and I think you do, give a listen to the latest episode of "This American Life." Its a superb storytelling performance by Mike Daisey as he visits the Apple factory in China. Also as interesting is Mike's voice and nuanced delivery.

Well, Macrumors claims Kevin Timmons was Microsoft's data center manager, but how does that explain the dust mop in this picture? The Macrumors article is here: http://www.macrumors.com/2011/04/14/apple-hires-microsofts-data-center-manager/

How do I transfer audio files to a PC via USB port wire from iphone recorded with FiRe? FiRe is a better (free) recorder than the built in Voice Memo as it has a volume slider. You can also buy a $ 30 STEREO CHEPO MIKE THAT PLUGS CONVENIENTLY INTO THE iphone. Voice memo though has a emailer built in. In order to combat piracy Apple does not allow for iOS device -> computer transfers via the USB cable. Have you tired using Bonjour in Safari? To access your FiRe recordings with Bonjour in Safari: 1 Launch FiRe on your iPhone/iPod and turn on Browser Access. 2 Open Safari on the PC and click the book icon in the upper-left corner of the browser window (it…

I have been using a Mac Mini for Boom Recorder on my cart since 2006. I started out with the first generation that finally bit the dust (probably literally) in 2007 and upgraded to the intel version. However it has been plagued with continual "logic board" failures. By the way "Logic Board" failure seems to be the "fits all" repair solution for misbehaving Macs. Just searching this topic will reveal that just about every brand of mac has had "bad" logic board issues for years. But I digress. The intel Mac Mini had it's logic board replaced in November 2008, then May 2009 and most recently in August 2010. In all cases I was not charged for the repair, I did not have…

http://arstechnica.com/apple/news/2011/01/project-hijack-uses-iphone-audio-jack-to-make-cheap-sensors.ars Hijacking Power and Bandwidth from the Mobile Phone's Audio Interface - Integrated Prototype "Project HiJack is a hardware and software platform for enabling communication between a small, low-power peripheral and an iDevice. The system uses a 22kHz audio signal, which is converted into 7.4mW of power at 47 percent efficiency. That power runs a TI MSP430 microcontroller as well as any attached electronics, and allows the HiJack to communicate with an iOS application. The components to build a HiJack cost as little as $2.34 in significant quantities." -- Jan

Heads up for anyone who has received this sort of thing in their email. The bad grammar and non-Apple links should be enough for people to realize this is a phishing scam. Do not click on any of the links or risk having personal information, IDs and passwords stolen.

I was looking around the You Tube and found one of my favorite old programs. Connections with James Burke. In the below linked episode he outlines a personal assistant on his MAC laptop while in India and it bears an uncanny resemblance to Siri or Google Plus. This show was produced in 1997 almost a decade before the iPhone was announced. So let's hope Apple didn't notice this video when they were filing patent applications for Siri. The pertinent part starts about 2 minutes in. And if you haven't seen the rest of the series it is a fascinating look at the various connections between historical events and scientific discovery. It had 3 series all of them amazi…

Quicken 2015: Close, But Not Yet Acceptable ------------------------------------------- by Glenn Fleishman: <glenn@glennf.com>, @glennf article link: <http://tidbits.com/e/15049> 25 comments What I wanted out of Quicken 2015 for Mac wasn’t improvement so much as a path forward: I wanted to know that when OS X 10.10 Yosemite shipped, I wouldn’t be waiting for Intuit to issue yet another extension on life for Quicken 2007. I pictured myself setting up (as I had before) a virtual machine running an older version of Mac OS X just to keep Quicken 2007 alive. Horrors. <http://www.quicken.com/mac> I have tried nearly every Qu…

These are strange times. Bloomberg just reported that Apple is now slightly more valuable (at least for its market cap) than Exxon/Mobil, making it -- technically -- the most valuable corporation in the world. Their stock is also at an all-time high, closing in on $400 a share. It wasn't that long ago that they were struggling at 1/10th that, not many years ago. I know pundits could argue, "and if Apple just cut their prices about 15-20%, they'd sell more stuff, have more modest profits, and still be the #2 biggest company in the world." I see good and bad with this, but I'm glad to see somebody's making money in this economy. Full story at this link: …

More images, site plans and floor plans for Apple's new Cupertino Campus. Full article and .pdf's available HERE "It's a pretty amazing building. It's a little like a spaceship landed. It's got this gorgeous courtyard in the middle... It's a circle. It's curved all the way around. If you build things, this is not the cheapest way to build something. There is not a straight piece of glass in this building. It's all curved. We've used our experience making retail buildings all over the world now, and we know how to make the biggest pieces of glass in the world for architectural use. And, we want to make the glass specifically for this building here. We can make it c…

Pen for iPad. Just found this on the app store today. I find myself with no time to type sound reports during a shoot. This looks handy to me for just making quick notes on the fly and later transfer to Sound Reporter. I also like that I can use a big fat red marker to tell someone on set something without making a sound or trying to use hand signals to convey a simple message. To me with the eraser and pen and type tools it works like a Etch a Sketch with pages. Will let you know how it works. Tom Maloney
