CNET reports that Intel is preparing to launch its Light Peak high-speed computer connection standard as soon as early next year, paving the way for 10 Gbps connections.Light Peak is now on track to appear in products in the first half of 2011--and likely earlier in the year than later, according to an industry source familiar with the progress of the technology. Light Peak is significantly faster than even USB 3.0, carrying data at 10 gigabits per second in both directions simultaneously. Apple is expected to play a key role in the deployment of Light Peak, as the company was said to have played a key role in the development of the technology.. . .Apple is expected to…

After all the complaining about the new connector on the iPhone 5, there have been some significant revelations about this connector. These explanations go far beyond the remarks about how Apple used the new connector just to keep us buying new stuff and how awful it is that Apple has pissed off all the accessory companies. It looks to be a truly "smart" cable with active adaptive components that configure its use. Apple's Lightning Connector Uses Adaptive Technology to Dynamically Assign Pin Functions With Apple's new Lightning connector on the iPhone 5 dropping to just eight contact pins from the 30 pins seen in the original dock connector and gaining t…

How about making my lightning cable actually lightening by making it plug into my currently unused and hyper speed thunderbolt port. at 10gbps theoretically I could sync my entire music library to my 64gb iPhone and iPad in approximately 30 seconds lol.

I think there was a thread, or a tangent on a thread, but I can't find it, so..... What are the iPhone/iPad/iPod touch apps you have found useful for work? Not time killers, but actually useful. My phone is currently a Droid (till next iPhone is released), but I have an iPad too, so I might be missing some apps. Offhand the ones I know about, and find useful: LectroRM FreqFinder I'm dabbling with Sound Report Writer for run+gun bag work notes that I would otherwise scribble on paper. Specifically jobs that issue a 744T and I don't have my Fusion. On my iPad, I have the Denecke and Ambient TC apps. I have not gotten/made the cable yet, so I have not …

Apple has quietly admitted that there might be a problem with the video chips on 'a small percentage' of MacBook Pro models. Just a month too late for me, as mine crapped out during prep for a show and I had to go out and buy another one. Still, at least it looks as though I can get my old one fixed and sell it on. Here's a link that gives some background info: http://preview.tinyurl.com/k5vzbej And here's the official Apple link: http://www.apple.com/uk/support/macbookpro-videoissues/ Regards, John

I have two 13" MBPs, one from 2010 and one from mid 2012, if I upgrade the new one to 16gb, can I put my 2x4gb DRAM modules in the old one? The specs are very similar, except for the voltage.

MacPro Sales To Stop March 1 in EU Countries If you live in a country under the European Union and you were thinking of purchasing a Mac Pro, do it before March 1st. Apple told reseller and channel partners recently that it would stop all sales of the desktop system on March 1st to comply with new EU regulatory standards. IEC 609501 Amendment 1, covers safety and electrical standards as they relate to electrical equipment and unfortunately for EU customers, the Mac Pro does not comply with this standard, due to issues with power provided to its I/O ports and the placement of its fan guards. The MacPro is the only Apple product to fall under this ruling, becau…

Microsoft has never learned how to compete --- try making "insanely great products" for a change. The latest ads, surely in bad taste (and Microsoft has pulled the videos from YouTube today) If the executive in the videos is intended to resemble Steve Jobs, then they would appear to be in very poor taste. It's not at all clear how the videos -- which don't ever explain how Windows Phone is better than iOS -- help Microsoft achieve its stated goal of getting users to switch to its platform. http://youtu.be/avO5FXj7K-c Microsoft gave this statement to The Next Web: "The video was intended to be a light-hearted poke at our friends from Cupertino. But it was off …

Developer's preview of Mountain Lion has been released and looks to have a number of really useful features incorporated, most seeming to further integrate with iCloud. As always, Apple is able to provide a level of integration along with ease of use that no other tech company can accomplish because Apple controls both the hardware and software and provides integrated Cloud functions on their own servers. - excerpted: Apple today released a developer preview of OS X Mountain Lion, the ninth major release of the world's most advanced operating system, which brings popular apps and features from iPad to the Mac and accelerates the pace of OS X innovation. Mount…

I haven't installed Mountain Lion yet on any of my computers, but I read with great interest this very thorough and thoughtful review of not only the new operating system but the whole Apple ecosystem as well. It's a good read. Mountain Lion review from MacInTouch website

The Santa Monica Dispatch's Peggy Clifford attended yesterday's Santa Monica Planning Commission meeting and reports that Apple's new Third Street Promenade building was quickly approved, without even discussion. "The surprise was that the staff put the project on the Consent Calendar. I cannot remember any large, complex commercial project ever going on the Consent Calendar. Apple was the only item on last night’s Calendar. And, under the rules, the Consent Calendar is approved as a whole – unless someone wishes to pull at item for discussion". And in that crucial blink, the commissioners approved the Consent Calendar (aka Apple Glass House), and that was t…

I've finally been approved by Apple to sell my bloop slate app, and it's available on the App store as of today! I have a demo video at: rhttp://rakeshanderson.com/bloopbox/ Please let me know what you think about the app. The demo video is a little cheesy, but it shows how it works. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks

I think the new iPhone 4 (and the new iOS that runs it) is pretty amazing. I really enjoyed watching the Apple video, particularly the shots of the manufacturing process, materials used, and the result. I know there are those that criticize Apple, and specifically Steve Jobs, for putting aesthetics, feel and form before function, but I really appreciate the attention to those details. I know I'm not alone, people would not be buying these things if they didn't also perform "insanely great"! Watch the video on the Apple site (Courtney, be patient, Quicktime will load eventually)

I thought that I was going to be angry that they removed all the ports and just kept four usb-c's. But I am actually pretty pleased with the new MacBook pros. I think apple did a great job improving my favourite computer.

Apple on Tuesday announced a brand-new redesign of the Mac mini, its low-cost desktop system. Besides an entirely new form factor, the new mini now sports an HDMI video port, a new graphics processor, and an SD card slot. Mac Mini at the Apple site I was seriously hoping that there would be a new Mac Mini that my son could use for his video DJ graphics work. He is grappling with the whole move to digital video throughput with the mini displayport. Now, none of the Macs have support for analog composite video output. An outboard converter is needed to take in any of the digital signals from mini displayport and now HDMI and convert to analog video to feed legacy proj…
