With the primary intent of losing weight and making my cart more mobile and easier to manage, I built a new vertical cart frame with 8020. I also built a new 1RU DC system with 8 individually switched outputs powered by either AC or a 20Ah LiFePO4 pelican battery. I don't have final weights, but this cart is over 40lbs lighter than my previous cart based on a magliner vertical junior. After having my monitors broken in the past, I moved the bnc inputs and outputs along with 2 audio in/outs to the base of the cart by the wheels so the cables laying on the ground and a bit protected and don't create a trip hazard. Also built a new script holder with a ram mount adjustab…

Hey folks, I am attempting to wire my own TA3F to XLRM cable and I am having problems with the TA3 end. I am using Audio-Technica cable, and it is too just thick to fit through the boot (even with the rubber part removed). I used plenty of elbow grease, but I could not get it through. When I compared the AT cable to the ones manufactured by Sound Devices, I definitely saw a noticeable difference in thickness. Apparently, SD uses a cable called Gepco International. I've never heard of it. I was wondering if I could trouble y'all for your recommendations for a thinner cable that works well with TA3 connectors. Specifically, I'm looking for model numbers. I know Ca…

Hi, Does anyone know if it's possible to get hold of DPA microdot connectors? And if so, would it be possible to wire them to a Sanken Cos 11? I'd like to have a little flexibility with my lav mics. I have used DPA mics, although it was a good few years ago. I seem to remember the microdot connectors being comparable to SMA connectors, i.e. just a screw in pin and screen connection. My memory could be failing me here but if that's right then how would the Sanken's three wires connect into the microdot? I've read a little about a similar connector that Rode are now using but as far as I know they don't do a 6 pin Lemo connector, which I need to fit to my …

I've been soldering my own cables for a long time so I'm not new to the work. In the past couple of years I'm having more trouble with the solder itself. It wants to just glob up and not flow as easily into the wire. Tinning wires has turned into a exercise in patience. I have a decent soldering station, I use tinner/cleaner on the tip before I solder and I've tried different temperatures. Has the formulation for electronic solder changed? I used to enjoy soldering but its really annoying now. Any ideas what I should be using to make it easier/better?

So... I started my transition into the Axient Digital line earlier last year. For months I had been sitting on a number of transmitters, in the hopes of a receiver solution that would suit the layout of my cart. I live and work in New York, and thus I've always valued having as mobile, and lightweight a cart as I can get away with, and the full-sized Shure rack receivers just weren't going to work with my setup. Further considerations of mine were: The hope for DANTE integration, and a relatively high channel density (higher than Shure's AD4Q, at least). When the ADX5D was announced, I figured all of my problems would be solved by pairing these with the…

Came across this browsing on amazon, and thought I'd try it out. A little bit of velcro, and a connector for the bds, and I've got a large voltage display staring me in the face for the days I'm moving a lot and not thinking about my batteries unlessl my headphones beep. http://www.amazon.co...ils_o07_s00_i00

Referenced in another thread in the Camera section, I am posting a pic of a DIY cable for the Arri Alexa. This is an inexpensive solution to buying a factory cable to add a wireless scratch track audio signal. You will need a 5 pin male straight connector, a 3.5mm male connector with cable, epoxy, soldering tools, a cutoff tool (Dremel, or hacksaw), and a few minutes time. I had helped make a set of these on another feature with Bud Raymond and on this particular movie, my bad-ass sound mixer, Todd Weaver and I whipped these up in record time on set one day when it was discovered that the camera rental company had failed to include them as a part of the agreed…

Has anybody here had any experience with nested apple boxes. I saw a set the other day where the side of the full box came off to reveal a half, quarter, and pancake inside. I have been toying with making one slightly modified so as to be able to function as a boom caddy for those times I want one. Maybe an enlarged circular hole in the half and full box on one side instead of the typical slot. Also I will probably add a bead of silicone between all the joints to deaden any creaking noise that might come up as it ages. What I am wondering is if any of you who have seen them up close can tell me is what kind of hasp is used on the removable end cap. The one I sa…

Hi all, I am new here. The only thing I have soldered in the past are straight XLR and TRS cables. I need some assistance in making a new cable. I already have the tools, the connectors, and some spare starquad. I would like to make a cable that is as follows: 3.5mm TRS to (2) XLRf I do not want the cable to act as a splitter. I want each XLRf connector to have a different channel. My intention is to feed a device with ONE stereo input (3.5mmTRS) signals from two different audio sources with XLR outputs This cable will only be 2-3ft. long. My thoughts: The tip of the TRS connector will get pin2HOT from the first XLRf The ring o…

I couldnt find what i needed for sale so decided to make my own. I wanted to be easily able to turn things in my bag on and off, especially off when i wasnt using them and have an led indicators for reference. The first three switches operate pairs of Hirose sockets, the last two switches operate single hirose sockets. Each switches output runs through a self resetting fuse first, if i have a short and a fuse blows, i should se straight away as the LED will go out. It works really well and im very happy with it. It is a bit big but i needed the width and depth to fit in the switches and sockets. Actuually, when you solder in there you wouldnt want it much smalle…

Since I am currently in cable-making readiness mode(have 200' of CA3PS26 coming from Trew and Neutricons from Markertek for my DIY breakaway cable system), I am also thinking about building a breakout for the DB-15 AES connector on my Nomad. I am looking at different cable options, this one looks quite good: http://www.gotham.ch...7_details&id=59 Has anyone yet built one of these? Managing the shields in the DB-15 looks like it will be the most "fun" part of the job... and the 15mm diameter of the cable presents a thought as to the shell of the DB-15.

Hi all, I posted a link to a product called Sugru over at the Freelance Sound Mixers group on Facebook. It went down quite well so thought some of you guys might find it useful. It's a mouldable silicone solution that comes in little packs. Dries solid with a little bit of flexibility to it. It's very useful for fixing / fabricating cables and generally fixing stuff. Their website is http://sugru.com/ Sounds like I work for them doesn't it? I don't, just thought it might help someone out.

This is my new attempt to kill two birds with one stone: add a voltmeter and 5v USB output to my bag. Problem #1. I use a Hawkwoods DV-SQN4S battery distro in my bag. I power my gear (Maxx, 2x411a) from the switchable, regulated 12v outputs. For my meager power needs, I can usually get through a day with a single set of batteries. HOWEVER it would be reassuring to have some insight into remaining battery life. Problem #2. The most frequent power issue I run into is.... my iPhone. Rarely makes it through the day if I've used it for navigation to get to the shoot and if I'm using MovieSlate for sound reports. There are some nice looking hirose-to-usb options out the…

My K-Tek boom 102 is in need of basic maintenance. Any advice from DIYers. Dos and Don'ts. How to remove and clean the collars. I'm having to tighten the collars more than usuall. I know I can send it off to get done, I prefer spending the money on needed gear.

Anyone make their own? I made one using a 5 pin xlr (pin 1 shield, pin 2 +, pin 3 - mic / pin 4 tip, pin 5 ring for headphones) I grounded the shield on the stereo hp 1/4" jack to chassis of the 5 pin xlr. Mic works great, 48v works, but the headphones turn down when I turn up the volume from my SD 702t. Cable is Canare L-4E3-2P. Should I use a 6 pin xlr? I removed the ground from the headphone jack in the box and the same, actually, it works better with the ground removed, but still no volume adjustment, level goes down, not up. What am I missing? All solder joints are solid and resistance is at a minimum..... 000.5 or less on all connections using my multi meter. Thank…

Some mixers have ask me to post the "Remote Antenna". This little guy really can help when working in cars rigs. It is a great way to keep a better line of sight with your signal.... I have even used it on wireless boom set up for more range. (well its not really wireless at that point).. Anyways, it works with Lectro wireless. Check it out... $30.00 per or 2 for $50.00 for members of the forum. (Plus shipping) d3soundman@yahoo.com Darryl L. Frank CAS

Ok, so I've been planning my next bag mixer cart for some time now. I've looked into 80/20 materials, bought all the gear to weld aluminum, researched how to bend aluminum to make trays, etc., etc. etc...It started occurring to me that I've been spending more time researching then actually building. So, I told myself, "self, why don't you just build something as cheap and quick as possible because you still haven't started this ultimate cart you've been dreaming about." Thus began my quest to build a decent bag mixer cart for under $400. Yes, it can be done easily and I'll show you how. Stay tuned for pics, prices, part numbers, and instructions. =)

Until all time code devices have the same connectivity, we must continuously re-patch cables if we're jamming a variety of boxes on the same shoot. I decided to build this fan out cable to jam the obvious 1/4" and 5 pin lemo. Thought it wouldn't hurt to include BNC. My hesitation was with the mini... I'm hoping to jam Zaxcom TXs but I heard that some TXs may be wired with the hot on the sleeve, but this is not confirmed. I built it with hot on the tip and i'll try it out. I suppose zax net would solve this but until then... Note: this cable is for jamming one device at a time. -Devendra Cleary

hey guys So my kit has two Sony UWP series Wireless Mic Kits. These are only powered by two AA batteries. I know higher end receivers can be externally powered by a DC cable and a BDS system, but unfortunately the Sony's don't have a DC power jack. I'm wondering if there's a way to have a DC wire going into "dummy batteries" that would then power the receivers. I could then hook up the DC to my BDS. Here's what I'm working with: NP1 style battery, Hawk-Woods NP cup/BDS (Its the NPC-SQ4NS). The NP then powers a Sound Devices 302, and Sound Devices 702T from the Hawk-Wood's 4 pin hirose outputs. I basically want a wire that goes from the Hirose outpu…
