I get a kick out of veteran assistant Evan Luzi's blog, The Black and the Blue, and his interesting insights into that side of the industry. In this recent post, Evan lists 50 things that drive his department crazy: http://www.theblacka...ings-that-suck/ Among the more interesting ones: 1. Rush Hour Call Times. 2. Shooting the rehearsal. 13. Pizza for lunch. 14. Forced call times 17. Call times that go from sunset to sunrise. 18. Booting a RED camera. Like Forrest Gump said, “you’re never know what you’re gonna get.” 20. Being blamed for in-camera sound issues. If the camera reads a clean test signal from the sound mixer, …

The camera operator, sitting on the dolly next to his Red camera in 'idle' mode (fans roaring) said "Can we turn this ^%$# thing off, I cant hear the director!" Classic. Now I know how soundguys felt 60 years ago.

I'm new to Red cameras and in need of solutions for monitoring sound through the camera and using it to record, at the very least, a guide track. From what I've read on various threads here, it would seem that the EPIC is left sorely lacking for anyone needing to record high quality sound directly to the camera but I would appreciate any advise or suggestions for affordable but, none-the-less, professional level equipment that works well with the EPIC to record a guide track the camera from the mixer and recorder being used for the master track. Wireless solutions would be ideal. Please advise the best way to proceed.

For those who have done a lot of multiple camera shoots, what is the general consensus of the best way to link 3 Sony PMW-350K cameras if I don't have tri-level sync? 1. Feed the first camera with my timecode (SB2a -- just timecode, no tri-level sync) and from there each camera feeds the succeeding one with both timecode and sync signal. 2. Let the first camera be the sync master, feed the others as above and feed the timecode out from the last camera to my Deva. Is there any danger in #1 above, as all three cameras will be locked with each other, or is there is there a chance that feeding the first camera just timecode could cause an issue? It seems to me th…

I was asked to setup an Epic to jam sync to external timecode from a slate today. The timecode source menu was switched to external and the incoming timecode was verified by a green highlighted "TC" element in the main display. The timecode appeared to auto jam correctly as the Epic timecode numbers continued to count correctly after the external timecode was disconnected. What seems odd is that the manual says the camera can be placed in "Jam Sync mode" and there is a "SYNC" (Jam Sync) element on the main display but there is no description of how this actually works or under what conditions the "SYNC" element would be highlighted. Firmware 2.0.5 (current versi…

Hi folks, Just wanted to write of my experience with using a Scarlet yesterday. I know there is a lot written about the on camera audio situation with the Scarlet, but I had a that had me stumped, and I just want to see if the camera I was using had some major issue with its build or pre-amps. I have shot with most cameras, and many times on the Epic without any issue, but yesterday I just could not get clean audio into this scarlet. Mind you, it was an early model with serial # 79, and hadn't ever had a firmware upgrade. This was helping out an old friend. It was a sit down interview, and he owned the camera. So I ran tone into the camera out of my 552, via m…

http://www.macworld....l#lsrc.rss_main Clip: Earlier this year, camera start-up Lytro provided an enticing sneak peek of what their first product could do. Using a light-field sensor—the likes of which had previously only been seen in science labs and supercomputer-connected arrays of hundreds of cameras—the camera could record data about light travelling in every direction through 3D space. In practical terms, that means that the camera's photos can be refocused after they're shot. It's the stuff of sci-fi. The only problem: Lytro only demoed the output of their light-field cameras. The device itself, its price, and the details about everything in between w…

Just saw the announcement for this release: http://microsites.lo...y.com/lomokino/ much more a fun camera than a pro. But I always like to see these 'new' retro-innovative concept. It's refreshing compare to the "watch, I got more pixel, better sensor than you" type attitude. 144 frames is pretty limited, but might force you to be creative on how to combine things. Synching this with sound is going to be tough though!

I went through the menu on this camera, went to the audio section, but couldn't find any audio recording settings. Where in the heck do you change the audio sampling rate to 24 bit, 48kHz?

Hi all again, I m filming tomorrow with 2x sony PMW-350 cameras. Never worked with those before but from judging from their specs and manual they seem to have pretty similar modus operanti than previous sony models such as ex-3's and f3's. 2 xlr ins and one tc bnc in. Plan to record on my nomad 12 set at 29.97nd, 2x erx's with proper cabling for tc ( tc output power set at 2V) and scratch. I ve had great success dong similar setup with ex-3's and f3's sony cameras Anything i' m missing here? http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/product-PMW350K/ http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/assetDownloadController/pmw350_ops_man.pdf?path=Asset%20Hierarchy$Professional$sel-47432SEL-asset-189369.…

Reading this article there is one line that really jumped out at me: "Due to the size of the sensor and the amount of data being read out there’s still some work to be done around cooling and there’s no firm specs on frame rates yet" - article - In May last year I reported that Pavavision were working with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory on sensor technology for a possible digital cinema camera. In a surprise unveling at the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography (Camerimage 2012) in Poland they have indeed signalled their intention to join the market and have shown the first fruits of their labour with a new prototype. Aimed at bett…

Elsewhere, we touched on the Red Camera Company's decision on November 1 to cut the prices of the $34,000 Red Epic down to $19,000. This has caused a storm of protest from Red owners and rental houses, while also inspiring cheers from new owners who haven't spent any money yet. [Complete prices at this link.] The threads are interesting and relevant in terms of how the industry is changing, and what happens when technology is "democratized" (a term used often on the Red User Group) by price cutting. For those interested, here's a list of interesting threads, starting with CEO Jim Jannard's initial reaction to Sony's F5 and F55 4K cameras: Jim Jannard: Attitude A…

Making a breakaway end for a RED ONE(2x TA3M send/TA5M return) for my Nomad. Thought it would be simple but as with most things RED: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?55673-TA5-to-mini-jack Downloaded the manual... not a whole lot in there. Looks like there will be some poking around involved...

Okay so i m on a shoot today with a 5d camera. Commercial work with no video assist guy. I d like to send scratch feed to 5d to get okay sound for playback in hdmi monitor speaker. Try plugging my erx with standard 1/8" stereo jack cable sending tone and camera stays on camera mic? Tried switching cable, tried switching to a g2. Made sure i was plugged into mic input (not video output plug duh) on camera. It seems like camera doesnt get that there is something plugged. It always stays on camera mic no matter what i do or plug in mic plug? Am i missing something here? Is camera jack just busted? Thanks!

The JWS Canon C300 Audio thread had a lot of great info. I've worked with the camera before on a commercial. The camera was set to Time of Day free run. I jammed my recorder and slate from the Canon, but timecode had some drift. (Maybe 24 was really 23.98 and the AC and I were not aware of the "24 is 24" issue???) I have a shoot coming up with a C300 with my new Timecode Buddy system. Since there is no 12V tap on the C300 (unless they have a V mount and D-Tap), looks like I'd have to have the TC Buddy master unit on the camera (velcro'd to some gaffer taped adapter plate on the back of the flimsy LCD monitor). Looks like I'd send TC to the tx unit from the recorder …

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?92158-Enter-the-Dragon The part I find interesting is that (later in the thread) both Jarred and Jim say they're having to do major work on the rest of the camera in order to handle the output of the sensor. There probably won't be any external changes to the camera (connectors), but perhaps while they're 'under the hood' they can do some more thermal tweaks and shut the thing up.

I am a fan of the Alexa and have worked with it many times. I'm about to do a job with two Alexas and I was going to put Lockit ACL 203's on each camera, but now I'm not sure if the Lockits are really necessary as I could just jam each camera at start of the day and after lunch. Does the Alexa ever lose TC jam after playback, I know it can after about 30minutes of being switched off. Any opinions if the Lockit is required or not?

Hi does anybody know whether the microphone which comes with the PDW 700 on the viewfinder is a XY-mic (with two cardios) or an MS-mic (with hypercardio and eight and matrix)? I don't find any answer in my sony documents here ... Yes, I know this mic is baaaad. But I'm just discussing with my company if we're gonnal run it in mono or stereo by default. Mono would make sense if it's MS, as an additional directional mike. For XY it would make sense to run it in stereo as an additional ambience mike. Thank you Mungo

Hello Not a scientific test but just to get some notions of the fan noise of different cameras. Test performed with the F65, Epic, Alexa (ProRes mode) and Aaton Delta The sound level meter was set to 30cm of the film plane pointed to the lens. The acousitic minimum of the setting (sound level meter and room) was at 27.7 dB. (there fore not very scientific). There was mainly two camera position mesured : - front toward the optic - and we turned the camera 90 degrees to get the mesurement of the side of the camera (where the wents are often located). It's written in french, if you need any translation tell me. See you. Pat

I have mixed audio for RED epic before, but just a stereo mix. I know that the RED can record 4 channels of audio. I have two mixers in my bag, an FP33 and a Sounddevices Mix Pre-D. How would I get 4 channels of audio into the camera? Thanks!

Hello people. Pretty new here. Doing a series shot on Scarlet, and basically, I'm looking for opinions on the best way to get timecode onto the Red. Looking at going wireless from the 788. Either that or Lockits. Who's had relative success with the Scarlet? I know it's not ideal... Cheers Max
