Hey all, I'm currently on a show shooting on 2 of these HPX 250 cams. Post is getting a white noise hiss on the cam audio (which they like to use) at up to -40dB, usually hovering around -50. It seems to change based on location, but not based on which sound guy's gear is attached to it or whether it's hard-wired or hopped. Wondering if anybody has any experience, or idle theories on this. My personal guess is that the inputs are not well shielded and RF is getting in somehow, although there aren't "hits", just pretty constant hiss. Thanks! Abe

There's a new documentary produced and hosted by actor Keanu Reeves, and it presents an interesting history and arguments about how digital has replaced film for production and distribution over the past 10-12 years. The trailer is here: I found it to be a very well-balanced, objective, intelligent discussion of the various issues involved, neither for the digital side nor for the film side. The pro-digital crowd is represented by people like David Fincher and Jim Cameron, and the film side is argued passionately by Chris Nolan and Wally Pfister (among others), while filmmakers like Martin Scorcese take the middle ground. Pretty much everybody agree…

I'm on set feeding an epic tc through a hardline from my 788T into the 5 pin lemo on the Pro i/o. I've set the epic to external tc but its not picking up the tc. We've taken it off external and manually set it to time of day. I then checked my 788 and discovered it's receiving tc from the epic back through my tc cable's tc out on xlr. I'm jammed up but confused as to what I'm missing. I'll have to do the same with a scarlet in a few hours. The AC is no help. Thanks, Parker

Anybody ever work with one? How bad is it for recording sound? Time Code in/out? Seems similar to the Canon C300. Here's the B&H link: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/853273-REG/Sony_NEX_FS700_4K_Ready_High_Speed.html Thanks in advance... Geoff

I couldn't find a way to adjust volume on the headphone out of the 'standard' Alexa we're shooting right now. Is there a way to adjust....? The other thing is that I get a low level but audible hum on the headphone return. But doing a test shot there's no hum on playback. DIT station also doesn't get a hum via SDI. I still don't like it though Anybody ever experienced that....? tx, Karl

I was surprised to discover today on the RedUser forum that a couple of Swiss film technicians have come up with a fix for the Red Epic fan. One of them is cameraman Patrick Tresch; the other is Jacques Sax, the founder of the famed mixer/recorder company Sonosax. The unit is basically a small $800 metal brick that bolts on top of the camera, and has a "nearly silent" fan that blows into the intake port on the back of the Epic. (Yes: a fan in front of a fan.) The idea is, this very quiet fan runs 100% of the time, and prevents the bigger fan from ramping up and going into leaf-blower mode. It looks like this: I have no idea how well it works in the re…

I was asked to record sound direct to camera today for a documentary series shot on F3. I have always used double system sound with these types of cameras in the past but I was more than pleasantly surprised by the quality of sound back off the camera. Of course I still ran a backup but I am more than happy for them to use the sound on the camera! Nice work Sony!

At IBC this year, Aaton demonstrated a functioning Delta Penelope Digital Cinema Camera. The Delta Penelope project was first announced jointly with AbelCine at NAB 2010 as a “digital mag” upgrade to the Penelope Super-35 film camera. Since then, the camera has evolved into its own complete design, featuring a CCD (as opposed to CMOS) Super-35 sensor, an optical viewfinder with spinning mirror shutter, and Aaton’s famed ergonomic “cat on the shoulder” design. http://blog.abelcine.com/2012/09/27/aaton-unveils-the-delta-penelope-camera/ Or http://johnbrawley.wordpress.com/2012/09/17/aaton-delta-penelope/

Have a possible shoot upcoming with Nikon D800 and the external Ninja deck. Wondering if anyone has some tales to tell regarding TC and audio possibilities for this set up. The project is a month long doc with 2 cameras and I will most likely have a 788T as main recorder TC master.

I seem to be running into some Panasonics lately, and would like to build a 5-pin XLR to 1/8" return adapter for my ENG snake. What is the correct pin out and are the neutral connections tied to shield/ground or floated? Thanks

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/professional/products/professional_cameras/digital_slr_cameras/eos_6d Nothing really new on our end except for the alleged timecode feature. There's no port for it, so I assume it's LTC via the mic jack. Anyone know anything about this yet?

hello i am sure i am right but cable didnt seem to work today, g2 output is wired tip and sleeve only the ring n/c and the epic 3.5mm jack is wired ring and sleeve to g2 o/p sleeve and wired tip to tip. epic was ticked unbalanced on menu still no audio is this the correct wring for an epic when unbalnced is ticked? ie epic end ring and sleeve tied and tip goes to g2 tip. or should it be g2 o/p wired seeve to sleeve and tip to tip and both rings n/c and menu ticked unbalanced was only a test today but sure the cable worked before, cable is buzzed thru and is fine. any help much appreciated thanks richard

Having worked with this camera for the last few months, it seems clear the camera department finds this the least objectionable of the HD systems. From my perspective, I don't run sound to it, and I had the camera house supply a pair of 1/4" to lemo jam cables so the ACs can jam the cameras from my TS3 slates, as required. The camera makes very little noise, and can roll late or cut early on multiple camera setups without making extra noise. It makes the whole thing like a film shoot for me. Only difference is the TC rate of 23.98. I love it.

Sony released a slew of new cameras... actually most of them quite interesting. A99 is a full frame DSLR. The HDMI output is clean and uncompressed 4:2:2, so a good candidate for external recorders and has an ok'ish AVCHD2.0 built in capability. Mic input with headphone output plus an accessory device that can accept XLR mic and line inputs. Had a recent experience with the Canon EOS-5D Mk II that was illuminating. I generally send a wireless or cable feed as reference to the camera, just to aid in helping the assistant editor sync things up later on. After handing the camera owner/op a line-in cable and an adapter box, we were both flummoxed when he plugged in the mini-connector only to see the HDMI feed killed! I was stymied. We checked it two or three times... no go. There were some additional issues that resulted in us just killing the sound feed and going at it dual-system, with the camera recording its own scratch feed from the built-in mike. Sound was fine, under the circumstances, and I don't exp…

Had such a funny day today. Did a commercial for a pet food and they used a RED ONE and an EPIC as well as a bunch of GOPROS. Well, when shooting with cats and dogs you have an animal handler calling out all kinds of commands. Didn't know that...not sure if producer did. But the approach was to put a mic directly on camera, jamsync their TC and let them rove and go back and record wild sounds of anything we could (only sound I recorded all day was a dog drinking from a toilet LOL). So, I synced the EPIC no problem but could not get the sound to work no matter what I did. I tried running direct out of my Nomad to it, hopping, condenser mic, dynamic mic...nothing! The R…

I did some days with a runaround crew with the Panasonic AF100, which we tried to keep in TC sync with my rig. As someone mentioned, you have to read the manual carefully, since the process is somewhat counter-intuitive, but after a few syncs is was easy enough. It takes some getting used to the idea that the TC input is labelled as the composite video output (and that it only works as a one-time jam when the camera isn't rolling) and that the connector is an RCA female, but after that the setting was not buried too deep in menu-world. The camera loses its jam after any battery or frame rate change, so you have to be observant, but having to rejam fairly often meant th…

I'm planning on sending a scratch track to a Red Scarlet via a Comtek. I assume this Scarlet doesn't have the 'advanced' audio option and the inputs are 1/8" like the Epic. Cables, attenuaters, other issues I should be aware of. Thanks. First shoot with a Scarlet.

Working with Alexa and a boxx meridian video wireless. Any tips on dealing with fan noise? There is a "fan speed" trim pot but I am hesitant to adjust it without knowing the ramificatIons. It is fairly loud. Is it like red where the fan can be controlled until the unit overheats? Boxx documentation is a little sparse online. Thanks!

We had a second unit day yesterday and the cameraman turned up with a brand new Red Epic. The alleged time code in was a 4 pin Lemo. I thought that time code standard was 5 pin. Anyone come across this 4 pin version? Malcolm Davies. A.m.p.s. p.s. IMHO it may be a brand new model but still a sac de merde. The noise of the fan was unbelievable.
