I don't even really know where to start here, so I'll just copy/paste the eMail for your enjoyment... not really looking for any answers, so much as perhaps some commiseration from those of you who've been down a similar road: (names changed to protect the oblivious) On Aug 27, 2012, at 1:34 PM, [Producer]<producer(at)productioncompany(dot)com> wrote: Tom, Thank you for touching base with me today. Working with Alexa and a boxx meridian video wireless. Any tips on dealing with fan noise? There is a "fan speed" trim pot but I am hesitant to adjust it without knowing the ramificatIons. It is fairly loud. Is it like red where the fan can be controlled until the unit overheats? Boxx documentation is a little sparse online. Thanks!

Hi. I need to connect my SD 788T with a Panasonic AG-AF100P to synchronize Time Code. Camera as Master and 788T as slave, but I don't know where connect cable to the camera.

We had a second unit day yesterday and the cameraman turned up with a brand new Red Epic. The alleged time code in was a 4 pin Lemo. I thought that time code standard was 5 pin. Anyone come across this 4 pin version? Malcolm Davies. A.m.p.s. p.s. IMHO it may be a brand new model but still a sac de merde. The noise of the fan was unbelievable.

Just did some shooting on the EX3 this morning and only had the left channel coming back on my return. Seemed to be the same with headphones plugged in. Couldn't find an option for this in the manual on the audio routing or monitoring. Meters on the camera were happy and it was all there playing back over the speaker. Anyone else had this? Broken camera? Odd size jack?

On these new breed of cameras, the front inputs are a 5 pins XLR-F, intended to use with an on-board stereo mic. Now I want to use that connector to receive two different signals : an on board mono mic, and the output of a receiver, at mic level obviously. The phantom power is always on the two inputs, but this shouldn't harm the receiver (which would be any Lectro model from 190 to 210d to 411, depending of the day) Now I tried with a Y cable I made, and no way to have any signal from a mono mic. Yes, the phantom power is on. I missed something. Any light ?

Had a recent experience with the Canon EOS-5D Mk II that was illuminating. I generally send a wireless or cable feed as reference to the camera, just to aid in helping the assistant editor sync things up later on. After handing the camera owner/op a line-in cable and an adapter box, we were both flummoxed when he plugged in the mini-connector only to see the HDMI feed killed! I was stymied. We checked it two or three times... no go. There were some additional issues that resulted in us just killing the sound feed and going at it dual-system, with the camera recording its own scratch feed from the built-in mike. Sound was fine, under the circumstances, and I don't exp…

Tomorrow I have a day working with an Epic and a Scarlet and I will need to jam TC for the first time, using a 744 as master. Production are providing two ambient lockit boxes. Having read through the manuals of the 744, the lockit, the REDs and many threads here I have come up with the following: 1) Set 744T to Correct TC Frame Rate (24FPS) and TC Mode to 24 Hour Run. 2) Put batteries in Lockit. 3) Set Lockit to 24FPS (TC>24FPS) 4) Set Lockit Sync to Off - NO GENLOCK TO RED?! 5) Set Lockit to JamTC Manual/Once (GEN>JamTC>manual/once) 6) Connect Lockit + 744T > Lockit should Jam to 744T. (Cable: 5 pin lemo > 5 pin Lemo). 7) Disconnect Locki…

I will be doing a shoot this week with either a 60D or an EX3. Looking through the EX3 manual I see pics of the on-screen audio meters, but they seem to have no markings. Where on the meters do I wanna see my -20dBFS tone? Looking at the 60D manual, there is NO mention of audio in. Anyone have experience putting scratch on a 60D? Many thanks, B

I get a kick out of veteran assistant Evan Luzi's blog, The Black and the Blue, and his interesting insights into that side of the industry. In this recent post, Evan lists 50 things that drive his department crazy: http://www.theblacka...ings-that-suck/ Among the more interesting ones: 1. Rush Hour Call Times. 2. Shooting the rehearsal. 13. Pizza for lunch. 14. Forced call times 17. Call times that go from sunset to sunrise. 18. Booting a RED camera. Like Forrest Gump said, “you’re never know what you’re gonna get.” 20. Being blamed for in-camera sound issues. If the camera reads a clean test signal from the sound mixer, …

Two red Epics on a movie in Alabama and despite all the quasi-negativity that's been bandied around here and elsewhere I must say it's been a pleasure so far. Time code jamming is easy, lockit box slates and all, although I have found that there's a three or four frame drift if I don't jam every three hours. The sound and picture is syncing just nicely and the picture quality is really awesome. The DP notwithstanding the footage is really pretty and the cameras really bring it pictorially. I worked with the Al;exa recently and for my money the price differential is not worth the picture difference which to my eye, (remember I'm a sound man) is negligible. Now let's talk a…

Chater Camera, a local NorCal rental house, just posted a picture of a Pro I/O module that they received. To refresh our memory, Red says: ----- For advanced configurations, the PRO I/O MODULE attaches to the rear of your DSMC brain to provide a central hub for essential I/O connections. Professional I/O support for audio and video is critical for large productions and the PRO I/O MODULE bundles them conveniently into one compact DSMC module. Connections Include: 1x Genlock / PGM / Preview (BNC) 1x AES 2x 3-Pin XLR Input 1x 5-Pin XLR Output 1x Timecode (5-Pin Lemo) 1x GPIO (4-Pin Lemo) 1x Power (4-Pin Lemo) 1x AUX (10-Pin Lemo) 1x LCD/EVF Outp…

just started a shoot on epic and planned to send a scratch for dailies wireless to the cam. it turns out that its quite impossible to get a clean signal onto the cam because of rf trouble. the attached receiver displays a heavy rf signal as soon as the cam is switched on and the receiver comes close to the red. massive blasts of noise all over...... director, script etc get the same feed and their signal is clean. coming from a shoot with alexa, where the same setup worked without problems. just wanted to know if someone of you experienced something similar or succeeded in operating receivers on the epic best m

I am a fairly green soundie, who usually works as boom or utility. Tomorrow I will be mixing some second unit coverage on the show I am currently on. I will be using a SD 302 and 2 lectros, and a boom. I'm going directly to camera via beta snake and I have never recorded straight to camera like this before. I guess I'm just looking for any advice in general and potential problems this setup could present. Thankyou

Just wanted to pass this on for what help it might bring. Recently did a job with the Scarlet for the first time. Needless to say, and in their grand wisdon, Red decided to completely throw out the old Red One menu scheme and replace it with nearly a complete new one, including icon changes as well. Anyway... after realizing that the old "chain" icon for jam sync was replaced by the word "Jam" (yes, that term was reserved for another menu function on the One), we still (both myself and the AC we're stumped) couldn't get the Scarlet to take hardwired TC output from my 744T with the Scarlet as slave. IN the end, we realized that ever time the Scarlet is powered …

I'm planning on sending a scratch track to a Red Scarlet via a Comtek. I assume this Scarlet doesn't have the 'advanced' audio option and the inputs are 1/8" like the Epic. Cables, attenuaters, other issues I should be aware of. Thanks. First shoot with a Scarlet.

Just got off another RED shoot (Scarlet, this time) and I've finally had it. It's not that it's the camera's fault - The problem is that morons can afford to shoot on RED. Obviously RED has some serious shortcomings with sound, but they're cameras - They're not audio recorders. Good productions understand this, but many productions don't. I thought I would share some experiences of when RED problems have become my fault. 1) RED One MX audio error: Not too long ago i worked on a short shot on a RED MX. I had NOTHING to do with the camera - no timecode and no sound to camera. Along the way, the camera started shutting down due to "audio errors." Turns ou…

I just bought a sony fs100 camera., set at 1080/25p fx. This should give a bit rate up to 24 mb/sec. When I connect the camera with usb2 cable to my mac pro and import it in premiere pro CS 5.0 then the images are very bad. The only thing I can find is that the bit rate of the images is about 2,8 mb/sec, which seems to be very low I think? So should this be the cause and what to do about it, or what could be the problem ?

So I just got hired for a one day shoot next Thursday. They will be using a Red Scarlet and they want to record to the camera. In looking at the manual, it appears that the Scarlet only takes mic level 3.5mm unbalanced inputs. Is that right? Can anyone share their experiences with me in recording directly to the Scarlet? Thanks, Mike

I am shooting with a C300, yet again. Producer wants 30fps. Is the camera doing a true 30fps? Should I set my 788 to 30 or 29.97ndf? Thank you.

Hi Everyone, Noticing an issue with with my Canon 7D internal "in-camera" audio. I would like to use Pluraleyes to do the syncing and have found it works well matching scratch camera audio to external audio recorder tracks. However, the problem lies in the fact that the Canon 7d's "internal" audio from the camera's own mic is not truly in sync with it's own in-camera video. The audio comes in 1-2 frames before the picture. I shot 1920 x 1080 footage at 24p (internal camera settings) with the internal camera audio at it's 48kHz default. I shot a handclap to camera (no external audio at all) and then view the clip it on the FCP timeline : the audio de…
