Hi all, I'm wondering whether any of these cables would allow me to jam the F8 and the Arri Alexa mini. First time working with both. Which one you would recommned should be the master TC machine? I'm aware of the sync issues but there is no budget for lockit boxes so I'm thinking in jamming every few hours and when camera and/or F8 are switched off. Here are the links to the cables and pics: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/spanish/c/product/423968-REG/Sound_Devices_XL_LB2_XL_LB2_31_LEMO_5.html/?gclid=CLGq9f3QmMwCFVAvgQodMWEDnw http://www.bhphotovideo.com/spanish/c/product/1021813-REG/laird_digital_cinema_sd_tcd2_01_lemo_5_pin_to_bnc.html thanks a l…

I had my first job with an Amira a few days ago and had trouble setting line level. I couldn't get the level low enough and while it was only guide track and seemed to sound fine, I switched to mic level and all looked and sounded fine. It's hard to be specific without the camera in front of me, but has anyone else had the same issue/problem? Thanks, Judy

I was cabled up to a Sony F55 today, and realized near the end of a long day that despite hearing a consistent and good return monitoring signal, movement in the camera's audio meters had ceased at some point in the last hour. We confirmed via last clip playback that the camera had stopped recording audio, even while continuing to allow for a good return path (to a Sound Devices 322 mixer). How could this be possible, and has anyone else encountered this deadly malfunction? We went through trouble shooting, even as other crews were breaking down, and used another available camera to verify that everything in my audio package was normal. I have had…

Spurred on by wild curiosity, and a general interest in silly things, I bought the Zoom Q8 camera a little while ago. My primary motivation was to buy something I could take with me traveling. I also kind of rationalized the purchase by telling myself I could use it as a back-up recorder, the sheer silliness of which becomes apparent the moment you hold the thing in your hands and contemplate trying to fit it in a sound bag. Form factor aside, it records sound just as well as other Zoom products like the H4N and the H5. Perhaps my biggest pet peeve is that the stock XY mic capsule that it comes equipped with doesn't have any kind of shock mount like the XYH-5 capsule t…

Anyone worked with one? I did yesterday and neither myself or the cam-op could figure out how to display large audio meters. The small meters in the bottom are of little use, no idea what the white mark is meant to be (-12dbfs maybe?). I assume the red mark is 0dbfs.

So I've been driving myself crazy lately with an audio issue that's really not an issue. I work with the same C300 very often, and I've been noticing some strange interference just recently. I notice it during sit down interviews when I listen to the camera return...I hear little blips like digital crickets. the thing is, audio from the mixer is clean, so it's not the mics picking up interference. I've swapped out my cables and breakaways to the camera, so it's probably not them. Every so often I just start hearing these blips, very very softly in the background. It's not something you would notice unless you're listening for it, but I hear it loud and clear now. Thi…

Working with two this weekend. Anyone know what to look out for? Looks like no TC in/out, my bet is that it's very similar to the Fs7.

Hi all, Wondering which version of RED's bottom fan might impact recordings of the human voice the least, or which might be most transparently removable in post. Has anyone run noise reduction (RX or Audition) specifically on dialogue, both with Bottom Fan 1.0 and 2.0? I've heard that fan 1.0 has broad-spectrum white/brown style noise. And fan 2.0 has noise that's more distinct and more localized to certain frequency bands. Anyone compare the results after removing either type of noise? Is one cleaner to remove than the other? Thanks!

Hi, I'm doing a film soon where the director wants to shoot some of the material with a vhs camera (he didn't specified yet what model they will be using). I assume that vhs cameras don't have any crystal system for keeping sync, right? Supposing we do short segments of dialog only, do you have any idea if we could get away with it or single-system is the only way to go (not a very good one also, and this supposing I could send some audio to the camera, which I don't know yet)?

Hey guys, Wanted to ask a quick question on the forum here about the Canon C300 Mark 2. I have used its previous model in the C300 awhile back where I was having minor timecode issues. Does anyone know, Does the Canon C300 Mark2 hold timecode well without the addition of a Lockitbox? Trying to make the Audio footprint as small as possible on Camera Rigs. Thanks!

Let me preface this post with the fact that I have been working on a small documentary piece and was hired to shoot video, stills, as well as capturing audio (yes, that is unfortunate). With our shoot requiring some international travel and thus a smaller footprint, I decided to leave behind our MOVi/C100 stabilization rig in favor of the much smaller DJI Osmo. Doing so allowed me to shoot with the Canon C300, but could also mix in a little stabilization when needed. My question going into the shoot was how practical would it be to do a walk and talk setup while still recording our subjects conversations? I knew that one of my shoo…

I'm looking to get into some docu-style film making for my hobbies and other endeavors. I'm not too savvy on cameras these days so I was seeing what ya'll recommended. Are 7d's and 5d's still hard to beat? I'd prefer something that was: 1. Easy to move around with and conceal 2. interchangeable lenses 3. Priced at no more then $1500 4. Sensors that are great in low/no light. Any info/tips are appreciated. Thanks, Michael

This story was told to me by Dougie Milsome who had been the focus puller on Kubrick's Barry Lyndon. There was a scene which Kubrick wanted to have lit by candle light alone - and what is more a candle unaided by any enhancement such as a tiny light stuck to it. The film stock in the mid 1970s was not suitable to be pushed to that limit without severe degradation, so a lens was borrowed from NASA that was very, very fast; it did the trick and the result can be seen in the film. Extraordinarily beautiful. Dougie told me how he coped with the almost non-existent depth of field that posed a problem for shooting this scene. The slightest movement toward or …

I was on a film shot in Techniscope in the 70s, Apocalypse 2000 in which Kirk Douglas played a starring role. It was an Italian co production which I suppose explains the choice of Techniscope. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Techniscope There was a sequence where the camera was attached to the door of a car (maybe a Rolls Royce) by a giant sucker arrangement as they drove past Buckingham Palace. The artist who was driving did not allow for this and wiped the camera out by driving too close to the street furniture. Much amusement from the crew, hardly disguised at all. Later on in Rome we shot in Safa Palatino Studios, https://en.wikipedia.org/wi…

Hey All, I know lots of you use the handy resource on soundrolling.com to check over different timecode options for different cameras and so I have updated it and moved it into an area which hopefully makes more sense and gives you video tutorials on most of the popular cameras along with additional notes of others, check it out and make a little account, https://soundrolling.mykajabi.com/store/czmsZcyP Cheers, Matt

Hello, Just to announce that the first indication on Weapon fans are a big improovement over the Epic's one. I would push production to go with the Weapon if you have this choice. The fan noise seems less a problem now. Here a encouraging Weapon user statement: Pat

an Amira timecode question. Film I am on at the minute, the DIT tells me that a few takes a day are 40 seconds to a minute out of sync, whilst everything else is absolutely fine. he can see no pattern to which takes will be out of sync, and it may be take 3 and 4 that is out, and take 5 is fine. Have ruled out the cards camera is recording to as it happens across all 4 cards that they are using. I am using a 788T fed into a Zaxcom cameralink, which transmits to the ERX receiver permanently attached to camera. everything set to 24fps. and i dont believe that camera has gone off speed yet on this film. I believe that the settings on camera are correct and on the ERX. The …

I'm using an SRb for the first time (Zaxcom convert) in the slot of a Panasonic camera. I have the output set to +5 and it sounds too hot. I lowered the output to -10 and it sounds fine now. What are your settings? Is this normal/typical?

I'm starting a movie in a week that is shooting on the Alexa Mini. I'm going to be using my ERXs for TC sync/ scratch audio. Does anyone have experience with the TC clock on the Mini? There are a lot of Movi shots they are trying to do and wanted to know if they needed the sync box. I told them yes for now, but if the TC clock is the same as the Alexa, then it shouldn't be much of an issue.
