So there was an Epic thread in the Equipment category, but it seemed to wander off course... and we have this fancy Camera section! I have a few questions... How loud is the fan with the latest firmware? It's Fall here, the shoot will be in a house that has heat, but probably will be fairly cool. The story takes place in winter, and the cast will be wearing winter clothing (NE USA Winter, not LA Winter ) So the TC input really is a 4-pin Lemo... Is that something I can get made by a usual suspect? I don't think the camera department has any kind of adapter. I want to go BNC->Epic (feeding TC from an SB-3 to the camera) I was told they have, or w…

an Amira timecode question. Film I am on at the minute, the DIT tells me that a few takes a day are 40 seconds to a minute out of sync, whilst everything else is absolutely fine. he can see no pattern to which takes will be out of sync, and it may be take 3 and 4 that is out, and take 5 is fine. Have ruled out the cards camera is recording to as it happens across all 4 cards that they are using. I am using a 788T fed into a Zaxcom cameralink, which transmits to the ERX receiver permanently attached to camera. everything set to 24fps. and i dont believe that camera has gone off speed yet on this film. I believe that the settings on camera are correct and on the ERX. The …

Hi everybody, i am contacting you because i am in a shoot where we use a sony FX9 (and FX6 as a A cam with no problem) and the problem is the following : We need to put audio in input 1 with Channel 1 and there is literally no option to set it. How to fix this? See the picture below. The first option is greyed out. There is no external option for Channel 1. The DOP can't help and i set on the right of the camera the channel to "ext" and not "mi shoe". I am hoping someone ran into this problem maybe already. Never saw a camera in my life that is litteraly not proposing you options for channel 1... Thanks

Hey Everyone, I'll be on a shoot soon with a Black Magic Pocket Cinema Camera. Previously I'd been using a QRX100 (feeding the 3-pin mini xlr), however production will have two mixers on the coming shoot with only 1 QRX100, so I may have to use another option. Hence I was wondering if I could send both audio and timecode from a Zaxcom ERX into the Black Magic's 3.5mm input jack. In the manual it says that the Camera will accept timecode into the left channel of the 3.5mm, does that mean that I can use channel 2 audio on the 3.5mm? Cheers!

Hey Friends, First post here. Just have a quick question regarding an audio issue on the Red Weapon 8K camera. Got an email this morning from the DP saying there's weird signal noise over the scratch track on the footage. We were shooting 23.98, I jammed with a Denecke lockit and was using a Sound Device 788t recorder for the project. I had 1 UCR411a hop on the Red sending a mono-feed/scratch-track to Ch-1 and was sending mic level to the camera. Basically what it sounds like is that the Timecode signal itself was being ingested into the audio/scratch track. I'm wondering if this is an internal setting on the Red Weapon 8K, or if anyone has experie…

I worked with an Alexa Mini for the first time recently, sending two discreet channels of audio to the A-box. I had the ARRI operating manual and the audio menu seemed simple. But, I allowed the AC to read the menu while I told her what the settings should be. I was overconfident. I later heard from the editor that we recorded the two discreet channels summed together on the camera's track 1, and the same two channels summed together on track 2. My independently-recorded backup files had each mic recorded on its own track, so problem solved. But, I would still like to know what was set wrong in the camera's menu. I've never heard of such a thing before, and would…

Hey everyone, I hate these kind of posts, but here I am in a Mexican hotel room with a camera that's not co-operating. Panasonic EVA-1 is shooting PAL, is in 25fps (on speed and recording audio), but is locked in record run and won't take a timecode jam from my tentacle. The menu item that allows you to switch from free run to rec run is greyed out and un-selectable. Anyone used this camera before? I've been through every menu setting and nothing has allowed me access to freerun. Thoughts? Thanks in advance. Parker Got it! Turns out the below setting must be OFF. Camera settings/fps/vfr sw - OFF/ON Hope this can …

I'm trying to sync EPIC with my Ambient Lockit 203 but I couldn't figure out what format of Genlock signal I have to use ? Using that Lemo 4pin to 3 BNC adaptor cable, the camera is receiving TC without any problem but do not see Genlock (GEN and SYNC sign is grayed out on screen). We are shooting on 5K 2:1 25p. The format I've choosen is HD1080p 25 frame rate. The firmware seems the last beta version 5.x.x... After an hour or few of internet search, I only figured out after the shoot that on the RED manual indicated that the Video Sync connector receives RS170A Tri-Level sync signal on pin 4, the GENLOCK BNC connector. Does that mean I have to set to plain SD N…

Hello everyone. I have a shoot coming up with dual FS100's and I'm stumped on TC for this camera after reading through the manual and searching online as well as this forum. I hope you might be able to assist me. I've been asked to provide TC for the shoot. The issues I run into are as follows: The only TC I/O I can find is that TC can be dumped out from this camera via HDMI. I see no connections for accepting any incoming TC, and the manual does not state that TC can be jammed to the camera so far as I can tell. So, assuming I have read the manual correctly, the camera must function as the master TC generator, since TC only flows one direction: out. If that is c…

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYWiv_55kvE It looks like they changed the whole fan path, finger crossed it will be better. The sound inputs will be made with different modules. From the Tyniest one (stereo minijack) to full XLRs. Prores internal recording is also poken and Vista vision (as an option?). More infos

Having just finished a few months with the lovely Alexa, I had forgotten how loud other camera systems can be. Back with the F35 with tape drives, and I am so annoyed by hearing the cameras. I am assured they are on the quietest settings, and I do hear them quiet down while rolling, but it's just so irritating. And I don't even want to start about how loud the DIT cart is. The loudest I have ever experienced. Truly shocking.

Granted, the death of film has been reported pretty much every year for the last decade, and I've grown accustomed to laughing it off. But somehow, this feels like the first real nail in the proverbial coffin: http://www.salon.com/2011/10/13/r_i_p_the_movie_camera_1888_2011/singleton/ Now once Kodak and Fuji stop manufacturing celluloid...

Tomorrow I have a day working with an Epic and a Scarlet and I will need to jam TC for the first time, using a 744 as master. Production are providing two ambient lockit boxes. Having read through the manuals of the 744, the lockit, the REDs and many threads here I have come up with the following: 1) Set 744T to Correct TC Frame Rate (24FPS) and TC Mode to 24 Hour Run. 2) Put batteries in Lockit. 3) Set Lockit to 24FPS (TC>24FPS) 4) Set Lockit Sync to Off - NO GENLOCK TO RED?! 5) Set Lockit to JamTC Manual/Once (GEN>JamTC>manual/once) 6) Connect Lockit + 744T > Lockit should Jam to 744T. (Cable: 5 pin lemo > 5 pin Lemo). 7) Disconnect Locki…

Hey all, Getting into timecode and worried about whether I'm totally #$@%i@ things up or not. Followed and what a few mixers have told me (and searching on JW a bit) have told me that I could jam from the recorder to the camera and that it should be fine. Without a lockit box. However, the Alexa manual is kind of brief and doesn't mention this particular activity of the timecode. What I want to know is what the blinking Alexa TC means. After I jam from the recorder it (it being the TC numbers/digits) stays solid for awhile, but then goes back to blinking again. This recent production with the Alexa also had a lockit box, and when I used it it would…

The Client and Producers were all a bit upset today as the monitors they were watching were so badly out of/behind sync the sound on their Comtecs that they had to stop using them. Does anyone know any way I can delay the sound only using a 744T and a 442 in a portable rig? The dialogue goes out of the 442 into a lectro IFB transmitter. Alternatively, does anyone know if there is a way to speed up the image being outputted from the Epic into two LCD monitors? Even after proving that there was no delay in the sound and that the monitors oe Epic were behind, they still didn't believe me. Lucky the Clients and Producers were close enough to hear without using…

Aaton is trigered (start/stop) with simple non stable button. I'd like trigger audio recorder same way but most use dedicated remotes. Any idea which recorders (portable) can be started/stopped with one button? I want keep setup simple as possible. Zoom is nice because record 10s earlier.

Hello, Just finished a week of shooting with Sony FS7, the camera man do not want to have the extension module because of size and weight, so we have to go for AudioLTC. I was today in the editing room to sync the files, even FCPauxTC or TatancleSync can not read MXF Files.. I am very thankful for every tipps, otherwise we have to convert the all MXF files to ProRess, which the camera man do not prefer to.

So my partner is one of the first 12 people to receive the first shipment of the Black Magic 4k camera. We've tried some lenses out and I must say the imagery is stellar. Looking for anyone with information on the audio for this camera. We are discussing going into the camera with a breakaway cable from a location mixer. Looking for any info on audio quality of the camera, timecode and syncing issues. We will be doing some experiments in the next few days. An insight is appreciated.

Hi all, This is my first topic post after a long while of lurking and a few replies. I'm glad I finally have something worth posting about! I worked on my first shoot using a RED Dragon this past weekend. (Location was a small New York apartment for reference.) The camera had the 2.0 fan installed. I agreed with the 1st AC to set the fans to 35% for recording, as that has always been a happy position on all the RED Epic shoots I have worked on. During recording I noticed an awful high pitch whine, not loud but not pleasant either. At first I thought it was the result of the electronic HMI ballasts being used. The next lighting setup used all tungsten unit…

Chater Camera, a local NorCal rental house, just posted a picture of a Pro I/O module that they received. To refresh our memory, Red says: ----- For advanced configurations, the PRO I/O MODULE attaches to the rear of your DSMC brain to provide a central hub for essential I/O connections. Professional I/O support for audio and video is critical for large productions and the PRO I/O MODULE bundles them conveniently into one compact DSMC module. Connections Include: 1x Genlock / PGM / Preview (BNC) 1x AES 2x 3-Pin XLR Input 1x 5-Pin XLR Output 1x Timecode (5-Pin Lemo) 1x GPIO (4-Pin Lemo) 1x Power (4-Pin Lemo) 1x AUX (10-Pin Lemo) 1x LCD/EVF Outp…

I was surprised to learn this week that somebody is planning to make a documentary film on the history of the Bolex camera: "Beyond the Bolex." I have great nostalgia for the Bolex, because it was hugely important to many 16mm news photographers and documentary makers in the 1960s and early 1970s, and I have some fond memories of using one occasionally in film school. All of us there dreamed of owning a camera like this during those years; it was the coolest of the cool. The Bolex had a unique, interesting design, and while there were much better cameras (like the Eclair NPR and the Arriflex M and S), the Bolex had an interesting charm that made it unique. Watch …

Hi Everyone, Noticing an issue with with my Canon 7D internal "in-camera" audio. I would like to use Pluraleyes to do the syncing and have found it works well matching scratch camera audio to external audio recorder tracks. However, the problem lies in the fact that the Canon 7d's "internal" audio from the camera's own mic is not truly in sync with it's own in-camera video. The audio comes in 1-2 frames before the picture. I shot 1920 x 1080 footage at 24p (internal camera settings) with the internal camera audio at it's 48kHz default. I shot a handclap to camera (no external audio at all) and then view the clip it on the FCP timeline : the audio de…
